Single words / expressions that make you dismiss an entire post

Any opinion post about a movie that has the word "pacing" somewhere in it, especially in the first or second sentence, gets skipped over because the kind of poster who uses that buzzword never has any idea what they're talking about.

Same for me with "pretentious," which in reality usually means "I didn't understand it."

I think I have matured enough to not dismiss an entire post because of a single word or expression or get upset about the use of grammar, language or whatever.

Even though there are things that make my eyes roll, i'll go with this here.

Dismissing an entrie Post becaue it includes one word you don't like is childish behavior.

addicting
could care less
People who think Muslim is a race
People who think Saudi/Afghanistan/Iraq are the same place and all are just "The Middle East"

Dudebro is a term that makes me instantly dismiss anything the person using it has to say.

I'm also a bit tired of seeing people being told off for 'victim blaming', like it is no way possible for someone to be the architect of their own downfall.

There is a poster who keeps using terms like 'best-in-class' to describe aspects of games he likes, which is another thing that irks me somewhat. It's like the person concerned has absorbed so much PR guff, that they have begun to regurgitate it in their own posts.

Oh man, pimpwerkx has been brutalized over the last couple of days lol

I don't get it?

I'm part of the problematic probably :p
Just dont like the word, reminds me of a broken washing machine like 'toxic' reminds me of an imagine dragons song. I also really dislike when people all start adopting the same language like in this case. There's probably a million different ways to describe what you want, and I like adding colour.

For some reason I can't stand when someone quotes a post or whatever and just says "gross".

Even if I usually agree the post is terrible that word just makes me picture some smug asshole with their nose pointed up towards the sky.

When someone starts a response with "Er..." or similar (erm, uh etc.). It's just condescending and makes you look like an ass.

I sometimes do it myself, admittedly...

Yeah those are the ones that irk me as well.

Whenever I see someone use "Objectively" regarding a purely subjective opinion. Also whenever I see "Rock-solid X FPS". Something about referring to it over and over and over as "Rock-solid" just feels like you're pushing PR terms. I remember a whole lot of that during the release of Dark Souls II. Every other post was "Rock-solid" this and "Rock-solid" that.

It sucks when people use words the wrong way. They are trying to say one thing but don't seem to know what the words they are using means. Muslim (as if its a race), Feminism, Misogyny, Socialist (politically this one is misused so often that it really bothers me), Objective, Hyperbole and many many others seem to get tossed in discussions often times by people who are wildly wildly misusing those words.

I know everyone is guilty of making those mistakes at times; but it really grates when the person doing so is extremely aggressive and pompous about it. Doubly so when other uninformed posters jump in to be backup singers; also seemingly having no idea what they are talking about.

I consider myself an asshole when it comes to judging posts but goddam I'll still read the damn thing and respond to the content of the post.

And why not try and help the person with their misuse of a word?

I think that is why more than anything it is imperative to respond to posts and to get clarification, or get an understanding. At the very least, you're not letting something possibly false and damaging from sitting on its own in a thread unchallenged or un-clarified. You stop the echo-chamber, even if it is only locally. Best case scenario, you helped someone clarify a belief or feeling, or changed someone's opinion because of the evidence you provided.

I can't speak for the rest of the thread but I will speak for myself. The reason I barely bother anymore is history.

I have tried to correct the people that don't understand 'Muslim', or people that don't understand Feminism, or that misuse Socialism and many others. I have found that on average these people are so attached to whatever idea they are trying to get across, that they are incapable of seeing eye to eye with Merriam-Webster for their insistence on pushing whatever narrative/idea that they were in the midst of when they misused the word.

I'm not all that interested in being berated and called a 'terrorist sympathizer' or 'White Knight' or 'Stupid Liberal' just because someone's feelings get hurt when you point out an error they have made. I just tend to tune them out instead.

The times that I have felt I managed to bring any form of 'clarity' to the surface have numbered too few for me to be motivated enough to continue trying. Taking up the task may be the noble thing to do, but I unfortunately don't have the patience for it.

When someone says something to the effect of "just because they weren't talented enough to make films, doesn't mean they get to ruin games with cinematic effects"

Or when someone quotes a post and they just say "I'm so done" or "smh" or "what even is this post? I'm so done with this conversation" instead of typing a thought or skipping a response altogether.

Ooohh lawd I'm guilty of that one. If not on GAF, in my bitter bitter thoughts about games I don't like for SURE.

Condescension. There are a few relatively vocal posters who have this patern. It's usually a two paragraph response:

1. I disagree with the low hanging opinion that I have quoted above.

2. Here's how dumb you are with a few insults tossed your way to make me look superior.

It's not enough to disagree, it's I have to make myself superior to you in the process. Why be mean? It's either narcissism or trolling.

I'd also toss out PC Master Race along with Gabe/Steam worship. I love Steam like the next guy, but Jesus.

The words "PC gone mad" make me really angry. (as in political correctness)

They pop up a lot in newspapers etc over here in the UK. No wonder I don't read them anymore.

I could care less.
Should of.
Could of.

The worst thing about these is that all of them spill over into spoken word too. I know a LOT of people who SAY "should of" and "could of" as well as writing it. It blows my mind, why would you think this is right ever?

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have noticed the preposterous preponderance of problematic. It's as if the internet discovered the word around christmas and now everything has to be problematic. Problematic is problematic.

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me
These are the worst. Thread titles starting with "So..." make me feel a disproportionate amount of rage welling up from the core of my being.
Are you Harry Shearer?

Hus weekly show sometimes features a segment on people beginning an answer with the word so.

I say whelp in real life. :(

My parent say it, my grandparents say it, my great grandma says it. It's just an expression I grew up around.

"Stans" annoys me for absolutely no reason at all. I can't tell you why, it just does.

It's not an expression, but those posts that have nothing but those floating heads also annoy me. Just like "Stans", I'm not quite sure why. I've been seeing them pop up more and more too.

As far as ones that are actually seen outside of GAF, "Fuck The Police" is a huge one.
