With the release of PS3 Firmware 2.0, custom themes have now been added. Similar to the PSP, Sony has released a tool that will allow users to create their own themes. Basic knowledge of XML and some art skill is all that is needed.

Supposedly you can but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it right now. The document says this:

To upload your theme file to the server for later download via the Internet browser implemented on the
PLAYSTATION®3 system software, the theme file must be assigned a special MIME-Type and extension.
The MIME-Type and extension are shown below.

Yeah, I just went to the site on my PS3's browser and DL'd the few that were on there. They were waiting under the theme settings.

i just did some icons for a test but the fking compiler still doesnt work for me ... if i drag and drop the xml in it i get an error (system couldnt find the path..) and it failes

You have to put it in a THEME sub-folder, the latter being in a PS3 folder

Got me thinking..it'd be nice if they put themes on Blu-ray movies given how many blu-ray users are on PS3.

I'm sure we'll see them as game unlockables and extras too, asides from whatever goes on the store.

I downloaded the Sample theme, put it on my USB stick, tried to install it from the Theme menu, but it said that there is no theme on my USB stick. Anyone else had problems with the sample theme?

Has anyone tested compiling the sample theme with a modified XML table?

The fonts being designated by a number seems queer, seemingly hinting at a fixed selection of 2-3 fonts installed on the machine.

this is incorrect. according to the documentation, the font selection number is for one of three predefined system fonts. the color selection is for the background color from one of 12 predefined background colors, for the options screen and when you choose not to have a wallpaper with the font.

unless it's undocumented, currently it doesn't look like there's a way to change the font color.

and while the font is technically white, the fact that it is transparent and luminescent at least provides some assistance in creating backgrounds. I mean having a white or very light background is going to be tough (like the PSN Simpsons wallpaper.. uggh), but at least you'll be able to work with it somewhat.
