I think I can wrap my brain around what they're trying to do, but I have no idea how in the world they can market all of it. I'm seeing a lot of confused consumers in Nintendo's future.

They make awesome games. They market said games. People chat with one another while playing awesome games.

I don't know. Doesn't seem that hard.

Now if they were to try and communicate everything in a single advert? Yes, that would be stupid.

Someone can use them to start a new thread with info. I don't think I will because I'm typing with an htpc mini keyboard.

Oh, didn't catch that one. That's pretty cool... If people will use it. I mean, if gaffers forget to spoilertag stuff, imagine the Nintendo kids.

Yeah true.

I wonder if they could somehow implement a filtering system, through usage of keywords, and automatically spoiler.

It wouldn't be particularly hard to implement - just certain keywords relative to big parts of a games plot.

Thread's moving too fast for me, so I'll just add some general thoughts:

*I hope it launches in black. It makes the controller look so much better. Keep in mind Wii was shown in multiple colors but only white was available for a long time. Both white and black at launch isn't impossible (they did it with 3DS) but I think it's unlikely :-(

*Classic Controller Pro is something some of us kind of called. It only makes sense. This announcement makes it look like they're not gonna try to have more than 1 active tablet, though.

*Sticks and clicky was pretty much confirmed, but I'm glad that it's real. He didn't mention analog triggers but I'm sure that's the case. Ironic how the controller innovator Nintendo has a controller that looks identical more or less to 360 :) Well, ignoring the screen for player 1 of course. I'm fine with the analog placement though.

*Wiiverse didn't amaze me but it's a solid concept, trying to integrate social media like that. A nice but not essential addition.

*"Have you upgraded your scanner ding-dong?" Lol something about that is funny and creepy coming out of that old dude.

*Not clear on usernames or how 3DS is included in Wiiverse just yet. The wiiverse names other than old guy were simple ones like "Ted," "Jim," and "May," and not unique handles.

And permaban people from the service if they post spoilers.

How do you think Nintendo will open their E3 Press Conference?

In 2006, they had Miyamoto using a Wii remote to conduct an orchestra.
In 2007, it was Reggie being happy with sales talk.
In 2008, it was Cammie talking about her wrist, and Shaun White snowboarding.
In 2009, it was New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
In 2010, it was The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
In 2011, it was The Legend of Zelda Symphony.

I think they may debut their press conference with a major third party game (like Microsoft and Call of Duty). Third party relationships seem to be one of their new focuses with this console, so opening with one may seem wise.

So, what do you think Nintendo will do and what do you think would be wise for Nintendo to do?

Not excited about what they showed at all. Pretty much everything they showed I can already do on my TV now but better. I will be excited to see the games, but these features will be a waste on me.

Also how in the hell are people defending the grandpa video? Self aware or not it was really bad.

If people would stop bitching about it, people would stop defending it. True story.

Pikmin 3. Then a super fast montage of first party Wii U games including 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid and F-Zero!

:p

I'm not much of a social person. I don't use Facebook or Twitter' but I can see myself enjoying using the Nintendo service for some reason, especially after adding tons of NeoGaffers.

Its built in on an OS level. Don't market it at all. Do like PSN and XBL do. Make sure its intuitive, and make sure every person that turns on the console sees it (they have confirmed that the MiiVerse is what the console boots to). The rest will handle itself. Marketing should focus on the games, and maybe the screen. But probably just the games themselves.

Online infrastructure isn't really new, so I don't think they need to market it tbh.

Surely the tweet like interface will appear on the tablet only?

Watching the video Iwata said it could be either or.

Oh man I am not liking how it looks when you first switch the console on. It looks so cluttered and those popups look like they will get annoying really fast. Same with the popups for all the different levels in the games. Speaking of which, how exactly will that work? Will EA/Activision/whomever be forced to incorporate these systems into the game? I can't see that being the case, but if they don't force it, it may as well just be a feature of the game, not the system.

As for the controller, it looks better, especially in regards to the sticks, but they really need to move the Power button away from anything else.

My source is my ass!
Furthermore, you covered ALL the bases with the "no system redesign" by saying it could also have a slight, or a full redesign.

Besides your other grotesque statements (people just have to follow the links i gave), the post about the Wii U design was clear about the more likely scenarios (with in number 1, the no redesign), and i answered to you in the closed Nintendo Direct thread pointing toward to a no redesign than a redesign. Your bitter against me since 2 months is delicious :)

The curtains should have opened to the picture of Reggie shrugging.

Can't wait for Nintendo's E3 presentation! Seems like they are going to be pushing a lot of content for the Wii U.

Is it really that hard to understand the same people and groups of people would want to use all these sides that you think are contradictory at different times? I don't see why. Or the issue you have with all those controller options. Options are good. Everyone will have a Upad and will enjoy the main features that come with it, and for multiplayer or whatever anyone can choose the secondary controllers they like the most, or happen to already own considering how many people out there own Wiis.

But yeah, I really fail to see the issue with attempting both robust online and social features and keeping the local interaction friendly features in mind too. I'm sure that if they only showed one or the other you'd be here pointing out how important what they decided to not include is. Waiting to see how good the implementation is one thing, saying it's bad they even attempt to do both as if they're mutually exclusive features is another.

Shit, I did use the Wii's browser to show youtube and other websites to the family (no guys, not everyone has a home theater PC) and it worked quite well, this one seems to have even better functionality for similar group entertainment and the machine should be powerful enough for a much smoother experience even if it turns out to be the weakest people expect these days.

The social integration seems amazing too, no more having to first get in touch with friends over my PC or other devices and even keep that on to coordinate a Monster Hunter meet up and play session, everything can be done right on the system. How's that a bad thing, or how does it take away from local fun?

All those interactions and all those social features are welcome, of course.
And yes i'm precisly saying that i think those different demographics can alienate each other. In the end that's always one device and if it's used for many things by many people, well.. it won't always work well. I think the father who wants to play a core game and also make his young son play something simple, would rather use to different devices for that.. Maybe i'm wrong i don't know.

What i'm saying may be wrong but it's a legit worryness. It's simply that i think not every side of a market can be mixed together.. That's why there is diversity in products... People want something for them, not for everyone. A 15 years old dudebro won't like the idea that his console also being used by grandma to browse internet and sista to play pony porn.

Didnt catch the stream, only glossed over a few threads.

What is GAF's consensus on it? Positive? Megaton? Meh? Disappointment?

Since you couldn't wait til their E3 presser, where the software will appear, means you don't care about games anyway.

Dude, i & everyone else knows Nintendo will have great 1st party games on Tuesday but as any wii owner will tell you, it's all about the 3rd party companies!

At last years E3 pretty much their entire conference was about the Wiiu controller and a year later they reveal a "classic" style controller which is basically a x360 controller. That tells me that 3rd parties demanded a separate controller which is a very bad sign imo.
I just don't see 3rd parties putting in the extra effort to make games that FULLY take advantage of the Wiiu pad.

I liked that cheesy video, lol. It was fun.

Nintendo's gonna have a great E3... I can feel it.
