the more I think about it, the more excited I get for Miiverse. with the amount of time I already waste on Swapnote, I could see this devouring my life. >.<

what I also liked is that you can see when one of your friends or even strangers unlocked an archievement.

It can be a motivation like: "damnit, everytime when I see that level some other guy has that archievment, but I always fail" and you actually try to compete with strangers to also get the archievment

Oh man, I'm bad enough with games like Trials Evolution in that regard D:

Does NFC require specific codes or can it be adapted to things like Yugioh/Pokemon etc. cards? Would be insane if you could scan your real card collections and stuff. That would be massive.
I think both are the plan.

Also, figurines. Like in the Rayman Legends Wii U concept trailer.

I just want a chip implanted in my penis so that it can be picked up by NFC

(actually, I have a feeling this is why Kinects "scan into the game" functionality never appeared)

Honestly I don't think video was good, way too cheesy for me. I would have been annoyed as shit if something like that had been done at the regular conference, so its good they got quite a bit out of the way here. There was some cool features in there though, and the OS looked good from what little we saw. I'm also happy that they are putting forth more effort into the looks for NSMB, the backgrounds look much improved.

I was thinking about spoilers being an issue with the network features...

He mentioned prevention, but was their anything more on this? Sadly, I can see it being an issue if they don't implement something well.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
So my though on this.

_I'm not shocked by the fact that they try to reinvent the wheel like their own cause everyone is doing that at some point. I just notice that my worry from 2005 is terribly true now. Nintendo can't just pick the cool innovation nobody was using anymore, so they'll have to deal with the same as everyone else, and that won't be as efficient.

_I'm still as worried about the absolute contradictory direction of the device. WiiU is for family, and designed primarily around the idea of everyone using the same device for many things YET WiiU is finally Nintendo's return to gamers! Iwata even succeeded in opposing precisely the two inverse philosophy for the console. WiiU is a warm and convivial link between family members in the living room YET it's an online door to a wonderful virtual world that will never let you alone in your room (and by the same occasion isolate you from the living room).

That's, here, is the exact problem. Those are completely different philosophy, for different market and need different product and marketing...

You cannot sell at the same time the traditional Nintendo physical conviviality and the complexity and philosophy of online hell. Cause as funny and cute they will make it, this thing with massive players everywhere messaging and sharing things will be a hell for any casual using the console.

Oh and also 4, four control method for the console! Bravo Nintendo.

Anyway i think i'm pretty clear. I think Nintendo wants to go left and right and still keep his balance... And Iwata was so obvious when he told us that the WiiU was not a Wii nor a new thing but both.. That illustrates everything.
Is it really that hard to understand the same people and groups of people would want to use all these sides that you think are contradictory at different times? I don't see why. Or the issue you have with all those controller options. Options are good. Everyone will have a Upad and will enjoy the main features that come with it, and for multiplayer or whatever anyone can choose the secondary controllers they like the most, or happen to already own considering how many people out there own Wiis.

I only didn't like they had to make a new Classic Controller Pro but that was a necessarily evil since they wanted to add the clickable sticks to be in line with multiplatform expectations. Games that go for Wiimote style gameplay clearly won't have such issues but some multiplatform FPS or whatever would if they didn't do this.

But yeah, I really fail to see the issue with attempting both robust online and social features and keeping the local interaction friendly features in mind too. I'm sure that if they only showed one or the other you'd be here pointing out how important what they decided to not include is. Waiting to see how good the implementation is one thing, saying it's bad they attempt both another.

Shit, I did in fact use the Wii's browser to show youtube and other websites to the family (no guys, not everyone has a home theater PC) and it worked quite well, this one seems to have even better functionality for similar group entertainment and the machine should be powerful enough for a much smoother experience even if it turns out to be the weakest people expect. Hopefully it will also have better flash support but with so many more websites having incorporated iOS tablet friendly designs since the Wii's launch it shouldn't be as big an issue if it doesn't assuming it can connect to those versions of the websites instead of the normal.

The social integration seems good too, no more having to first get in touch with friends over my PC or other devices and even keep that on to coordinate a Monster Hunter Tri meet up and play session, everything can be done right on that one system without even any extra hardware like a keyboard. How's that a bad thing and how does it take away from local fun?

So it sounds like the Wara Wara stuff will be on the big screen and we'll have the usual channels from Wii/3DS on the pad to launch games? I like this.

In my opinion this Conference showed in a good way how the Wii U Pad isnt only giving more features for gaming, but also for social interaction within the nintendo network.

i like it. and i looove the curtain lol.

i also found the promo video to be pretty awkward but still better then the last years 3DS "reggie gets pwned by browser LMAO" video

It really isn't. If that is all going to be available on web-enabled devices, then nintendos argument becomes 'its perhaps slightly more convenient to look up information on the wiiU controller rather than the iPad you have on the coffee table'

The fact that they are making it widespread and open is good news though. It means they have confidence it'll add value to the wiiU overall, and isn't just a gimmick to sell the pad.

Maybe opting in is required to see messages for anything past where you are in the game if stuff is tagged for certain levels. Or toggles to only let personal friends messages show up or the ability to tag whether something is spoiler or not as a base level of prevention.

NFC is not like QR codes or "optic" in any way. It works with very thin microchips you can put into anything, and that communicates with the reader (in this case the controller) via a magnetic field of some sort. It's usually used for transit cards or control access in buildings.

To the NFC Iwata said cards and figures would work as an example. So WiiU Special Editions the best confirmed, you get an AC3 figure and place it on the controller so the WiiU automatically downloads the DLC. Also for preorder Bonusses with cards or with E-shop money. It just makes digital buying so comfortable

Factor in that the average age of a gamer is now pretty damn high, easily within range of having kids in their teens, and the notion of this divide within the gaming community grows more and more odd. I want to play my Demon's Souls type games and then go off and play some Mii stuff with my family. What's so confusing about this?

If a person is so unilaterally particular in their tastes, they are either too young to have a family they actively want to spend time with or are extremely isolated from new experiences to a point that isn't healthy.

Seems like you can tag responses as spoilers

It's not. You can tell in the video - you can see where the world starts.

Very disappointing. I wanted that more than I wanted an art style change (At least the background is nicer).

It is, look how it connects to the desert land as the camera goes up.
Ypu can see where the world starts becuase thats obviosuly were the game starts (in SMW theres a little road that went to the left after the yoshi house with only two satges and the bonus one.
It clearly doesnt have as multiple roads as SMW, at least from the video, and those fucking SMB3 houses can die in a fire, but it has a world map.

I have mixed feelings about it.

Any word if you can actually disable it?

They said they were mindful of spoilers and stuff with the wara wara chit-chat (terrible name btw - I hope that was just an internal nickname for it)... I'm betting there's a button on the world map that shows/hides those.

Also, they said we can take screencaps -- which is what I imagine they think most people will use that image attachment option for

I imagine so, I think he said It'll always be on the OS but during games its totally optional and up to the devs if they want to use it. If it's not mandatory I imagine you can turn them off too!

I think I can wrap my brain around what they're trying to do, but I have no idea how in the world they can market all of it. I'm seeing a lot of confused consumers in Nintendo's future.

So did Nintendo manage to perform genocide on the world's paedophile population or have they just loosened their belts way more than I ever expected.

Whatever the case, it's good news all round!
