Jim Sturgess already played 2 asian roles in his career, with and without yellowface
Also, for people asking about Thor and White Girls, here is a handy text about why it is completly diferent and the history of black face : Academy Awards 2012: Putting Blackface in Context
The TL/DR is :
Who was the intended audience for Soul Man? Serious question
C. Thomas Howell's career sort of died after that
Haha, I forgot about this one. I suppose that answers my question regarding there having been a similar thing happen since.
Was that movie any good, btw? Never saw it.
So is it also prejudice where a minority portrays a majority?
Well, he fooled me! more than 20 times!
That , to me means ; He performed a great acting job and has not got enough credit for it.
I never thought about it to be honest (untill this thread came up), but how did the black community in the US respond to Tropic Thunder?
I think he was referring to shrinking people down to Hobbit and Dwarf heights.
Well ... they can kinda get away with that because the production DID hire a midget double for every main dwarf and hobbit character ... so it is not like they stoped hiring then for hiring a tall white dude for the role
To be honest, the first time I saw this I just thought Depp would play some idiot who just thinks that he's a native american. Maybe that's how they should actually solve it in the movie.
Coming soon to a theater near you
Well holy shit. All these years I had no idea that the guy in Short Circuit was actually a white guy, and more to the point, I had no idea it was the guy from Early Edition. :-O
EDIT: and he was Iggy in the Super Mario Bros movie... whaaaaaaaat?
totally, he has bit parts in a lot of stuff. He never really got a leading role after that. After having watched the Outsiders in grade school, I remember wondering why him and Ralph Macchio weren't in more movies. A lot of the other actors in that took offProbably the same as Just One of the Guys.
The lead seems to still do plenty of work. He's just one those "hey, it's that guy!" actors.
Short Circuit 2 remains the only movie that has ever made me cry.

Let's play "Racist or not Racist ?"
Are you serious?
The scene is graphic for a kids movie, but it isn't particularly touching (not even the music is).
I liked Johnny 5, and seeing him get the shit beat out of him made me sad. Is this really that hard for you to comprehend?
"Short Circuit is one of the most racist movies ever."
yeah I mean, why the fuck is Kevin Costner playing Robin Hood, the least likely englishman ever
Not at all, I can totally understand that. What is puzzling is the fact that you say that's the only movie to have made you cry.
This one is both really bad and really dumb. If they couldn't get an asian man to play the role, all they needed to do was change the name used in the script and everything would have been the same.

Still no Peter Sellers? C'mon GAF, he's even playing an Indian man in black-face.
The Usual Suspects. Dude is supposed to be a Japanese man named Kobayashi. What's that from? It's the only one I didn't recognize.

I thought this thread was going to contain deep insights about how the relationships between Human and robots as presented in the film was an allegory of the racial discrimination during the time.
For a kid's movie, Short Circuit also had a lot of tasteless sex jokes.

Well, that is assuming it was his real name to begin with.
I always thought that was sort of the point, he never existed as a real person, he was just a character in a story told by Verbal. Or if he did exist he was just a guy employed by Soze to scare the shit out of the crew, so it wasn't his real name.
If the former, then the portrayal onscreen is the story he's telling. If the latter, then the Japanese part isn't necessary.I always thought that was sort of the point, he never existed as a real person, he was just a character in a story told by Verbal.
