Xbox One Scaling Chip Improvements in February Update (No more sharpening filter!)

Seems to have cleaned up KI and DR3 a lot. I just got done playing them both quickly to have a look.

Don't see why they ever implemented it. Much cleaner looking now.

Why does it seem people take such bad screenshot examples though. LOL

Shots of different characters for "comparison", or shots that show nothing neat or that are in interesting places...lol :p

These graphics suddenly look better, Im gonna need misterxteam to explain such wizardry.

lmao

Something like this:

"Well you see, the hidden ARM processor on the third layer of the SoC has a third dgpu that gives the xbone an addition 1.2jiggaflops.

Thus, with the 8 gigs of esram hidden between on all the layers of the SoC, plus the dpcus of the first gpu that Microsoft has only unveiled, you get games.

Did I mention the cloud? Oh, ya the cloud adds an additional 1.2jiggaflops. it's a local cloud though. Not a cloud cloud."

Seems like crushed blacks are only a problem in DR3 and KI. I don't think it's the scaler doing it. It's a weird developer choice for both games.

I wonder if the few crazy souls who defended the filter will now be upset...I mean, surely they liked it because of what it actually affected right? :p

Much, much better. It would be nice if the crushed blacks are worked on next. I still wonder what the hell they were thinking with that sharpening filter because I don't know anyone in the industry that could possibly justify that or think it was a good idea regardless of a game's resolution. To me, that was the weirdest thing MS has done so far since it served no purpose.

DR3 improved quite a bit just because of this patch.

Now I can use the much superior detail enhancement on my projector. Before I had to turn it off as that + the Xbox's really bad filter just looked awful. Now everything looks fantastic.

Very nice surprise. I know its off topic, but anyone have a synopsis of voice command changes?

Fuck, I am so tempted to buy an Xbox One, and I'm not really sure why. I want my Halo, Sunset Overdrive, etc...

I really have to hold out for that $399.99 model, or it'll be the death of me.

Well aren't they still miles off? Halo is rumoured to be 2015 now, and SO might be fall this year? So shouldn't be an issue waiting it see if there is a price drop this fall?

The only good thing about having a 720p 32'' LED HDTV is that I've never had to worry about sub-1080p resolutions and upscaling artifacts... (I wonder how the X1 will handle downscaling, though...)
I'd imagine you do have to worry about that as most 720p LCDs actually have a native resolution of ~1366x768.

Made a comparison for Titanfall beta, not exactly the same frames but you can easily see the difference. First before/second after:

Still no update for me. I'll do new titanfall videos as soon as I get it...

was just going to say, can't wait for blim's videos. ;)

btw Blim, can't get the downloaded versions of your latest TF videos to play properly - get frozen then motion-bleeding frames all throughout [tried updating EVERYTHING], any ideas?

Just imagine a game that used to look like super compressed shit with artifacts everywhere now only looking sub-1080p.

The first half of your sentence and the last half describe the same thing

sharpening just takes that already compressed blurry artifacty look and then takes a big steaming shit on top of it for good measure

upscaling is still extremely undesirable on an lcd panel, now ms just removed a layer of arbitrary shittyness

Looks much better now, those are some great TF comparison shots too. Why did they even launch with this filter.

Side note, why does the text look like garbage in TF in those X1 shots?

Was this the source of the dreaded "crushed blacks?" or is that strictly a contrast setting where I have to turn down the contrast on my TV every time I boot up the XB1?

Hopefully that means Netflix will stop looking like piss on the XB1. I either have to switch to my PS4 or my 360 when I'm done playing an XB1 game if I want to watch something on Netflix, b/c I just cannot stand that weird grainy look the XB1's netflix streaming has. It's jarring as all hell.

Unless this only effects games and not how it displays DVDs and/or netflix, in which case I guess I'll just have to keep switching consoles whenever I want to load it up or watch a movie.

Where did all the people who defended the sharpening filter saying it made the "picture pop out more" go?

Well. It did make something pop out more: the jaggies.

Seriously, you could cut a loaf of bread with em. On Titanfall you still can, mind you, but it's better now.

Holy shit at those Titanfall comparisons. Was planning to grab an X1 late this year, and those pictures just made me feel a whole lot better about that.

Definitely glad things are better for people. Good timing too, right before Titanfall.

After seeing the comparisons pics I find it difficult to play Titanfall as I don´t have the update yet. Good to see MS listening to the core gamers, we don´t want this "feature".

Just left my X1 on standby, hopefully I´ll get the patch when I come back from a run :)
