I think the biggest problem with the Online game is that it's 'designed around' microtransactions = proof being the $66m.
Now before I get labeled or called out as this being nonsense 'because there are plenty of ways to earn enough money', I'm basing my opinion on the average player. I'm basing my opinion on what Jonathan Blow has to say about microtransactions;

I no longer play this game online. I bought the game when it came out. I reckon I need @ $10m to buy things in the game I'd like, things other people can get with a couple of button clicks if they are willing to pony up the dosh.
To get that $10m is an impossibility for me personally for several reasons;
- I play on my own, no friends/crew for the most part
- I play other games
- I have a family
- I don't want to spend hours upon hours grinding doing the same shit
- Even if I did heists, I believe you can get @ $80k which has to be shared among the 'friends I've not got' and takes @ 'x' minutes. To get to $10m = 'x' hours = grinding
Add to the fact there are a few basic things with the online I'm not overly enamored with and some of which, to me, contradict the whole point of playing the game online = next game Rockstar produce = me not buying it unless I want to play the single player alone and/or until its cheaper.
