GTA Online microtransactions made nearly $66.4 million in three months

So we can call modes in a game that costs 60 bucks free to play now? Mario 3D World has over 80 free to play levels and you dont even get harassed for payments!!
So many free to play games with our shooters!

Seems like some sort of investor spin.

I think the biggest problem with the Online game is that it's 'designed around' microtransactions = proof being the $66m.

Now before I get labeled or called out as this being nonsense 'because there are plenty of ways to earn enough money', I'm basing my opinion on the average player. I'm basing my opinion on what Jonathan Blow has to say about microtransactions;

I no longer play this game online. I bought the game when it came out. I reckon I need @ $10m to buy things in the game I'd like, things other people can get with a couple of button clicks if they are willing to pony up the dosh.

To get that $10m is an impossibility for me personally for several reasons;

- I play on my own, no friends/crew for the most part
- I play other games
- I have a family
- I don't want to spend hours upon hours grinding doing the same shit
- Even if I did heists, I believe you can get @ $80k which has to be shared among the 'friends I've not got' and takes @ 'x' minutes. To get to $10m = 'x' hours = grinding

Add to the fact there are a few basic things with the online I'm not overly enamored with and some of which, to me, contradict the whole point of playing the game online = next game Rockstar produce = me not buying it unless I want to play the single player alone and/or until its cheaper.

F* u R* :)

Now even Rockstar is profiting from mattricks... such a shame but this is what we have to endure the whole generation now, until people realize how toxic it is for our industry. Remember how people laughed about horse armor? It all started there.

Even if you got $10, you wouldn't be able to purchase everything in the game since you need to unlock them by leveling up and once you do, you probably already have enough money to buy those things you want. I'm already at level 73 and have about 500K and pretty much nothing interesting for me to buy yet. I wanted to tune my vehicle in the game but some of the parts are only unlocked if I get to a specific level and since I am getting about 35K per mission now, I believe I can still get the parts needed in addition to the 500K I already have.

I think online was setup to make people play even more. GTA Online has a lot of content (some are good, some are bad) especially now that race and deathmatch can be created by players. Online was created to be played with friends. The gap of the fun factor of it versus playing alone is significantly wide.

People need to quit pointing at that because examples like these are straight up buying money or EXP, while that's cosmetic gear.

Unless you hate TF2 hats, then yeah sure we'll blame horse armor for those.

I really don't think GTA Online is designed around micro transactions, even though it may seem that way now since some people find that it is hard making money. It seems that there are a lot of key features that would of benefited the economy that are currently not implemented in the game yet, such as heists and the online stock market (<----pretty sure that is not just meant for single player.)

Also, there are rumors that the casino is going to open up online for gambling and that they are going to be incorporating some sort of property management system.

Relative to the amount of money they made from selling the game at retail, that is a tiny amount.

Yup. Didn't the game ship like 32 million copies? Averaging only little over 2 dollars per copy doesn't seem very high. In fact that is pretty pathetic return based on the number of copies out there.

That is actually pretty good if you compare it to actual free to play games that might have a million or so accounts sign up but only 1-5% actively putting money into the game.

Well, apparently the OP is wrong because it was based on a misquote. MCVUK has changed the story by changing the quote. They now say:

“With GTA V, we have sold 32.5m units in to date, which is extraordinary. 70 per cent of people that have played GTA V while online have played GTA Online, which is a free-to-play experience. And recurrent consumer spending, which includes GTA Online revenue, represented nearly half of our digitally delivered revenue in the quarter. So people are voting that they want to stay engaged and they are voting with their wallets.”

This is really horrible. Who are these idiots who buy stuff in a game like GTA? These things are gonna ruin all the games in the future.
