Xbox One March Update Impressions Thread [Now Available]

Hmmm...don't know if this has been brought up already, but since I downloaded the update, trying to use the "Xbox, Turn Off" voice command doesn't seem to work.

Everytime I get to where I'm supposed to say "Yes" or "No", neither command registers. I have to use a controller to select either. It sucks.

I had the same issue but a full restart of the system fixed it.

Did the command "Xbox Turn On" work before? I always use to use "Xbox On" and never had problems, but then I moved to a new home, higher ceilings, more open area and the Kinect farther away and been having nothing but problems with "Xbox On" while sitting on my sofa. It would work if I stood up and took a step or two closer, then using "Xbox On" would work. I tried to calibrate it several times at high volume and it never registered from my seating position.

After the update, for some reason I decided to use "Xbox Turn On" from my seating position and boom it worked! Since day one I always only used "XBOX ON" as does my wife, but tonight "XBOX TURN ON" made it work from my new seating area.

According to Polygon Notifications is also coming in March.

The March update that delivers Twitch will also bring back toasts to the Xbox, the little notification pop-ups that tell you when a friend is online. And, Gibson said, Twitch will have its own toasts, alerting you when a friend starts broadcasting. These pop-ups, which can be disabled, won't appear on live broadcasts for others to see.

They keep bringing it. I got to wonder what is holding up that external HDD stuff.

Only thing I'm missing besides that HBO app.

I noticed the same thing. I mentioned it in this thread and someone told me XBox Turn On has always worked. But it never did for me. Perhaps it is a more reliable phrase to use.

There is still no real file explorer in the OS so my guess that is holding the external storage support.

Xbox moderators will be keeping an eye out for abuse of the Twitch app and have the ability to temporarily or permanently ban players. They can also remove their ability to broadcast over Twitch, without banning them.

And, Gibson said, the moderation team has already had experience with moderating video clips submitted through the Xbox One's game DVR function.

Xbox.com ban forum will be fascinating to read in a couple of weeks.

Good for MS. Wonder what the big update in the fall will bring. I like the little updates during the year, hope they keep doing them.

I really like the update so far , the new friends list is way better and little tweaks like standard close captioning , Xbox Volume settings and Bitstream are awesome too.

Would love to see notifications when friends come online etc.

I don't understand why there's a separate dolby digital bitstream and DTS setting. I thought the whole point of bitstream is that you are just shooting the audio stream untouched to my receiver.

I wondered that myself. I set my Bitstream Format to Dolby Digital and then started a bluray, selecting the DTS track. My receiver still said it was being fed Dolby Digital.

It will shoot Dolby or DTS to the receiver, hence why they are separate. You will get a constant Dolby or DTS stream

Yes that's because you told it to stream Dolby, it will stream Dolby even if what you selected is DTS from the Blu Ray

Pretty good list, but here's a couple things you missed which some haven't caught yet...will update if I find more:

General Changes:
  • "Resume Games Quickly" is no longer in Beta, the Beta label in settings has been removed

Friends App:
  • An icon in the upper corner of someone's name within your followers list will show you if you are following them back yet or not. If the icon appears then you are following them back

Yea, this isn't how bitstream is supposed to work. My receiver can tell whether a disc is DTS or Dolby. I guess I'll just leave it on uncompressed sigh.

I just noticed this last night as well, and I love the little touches like this one in the update. It's stuff I never realized I wanted, and I definitely want to see more of it.

So far so good. really impressed with this update. Can't wait for Twitch broadcasting! I would love to see a feature for those of us who use Kinect, that if we fall asleep watching tv or watching Netflix, it would mute or shut down.

One would have to imagine the only thing holding up the HDD USB3 option is that for the majority of users it won't be an issue until this fall when the average user will be bumping up against the storage limits on the console.

They probably prioritize the stuff they need right now for 75% of the users than stuff that only benefits 1% right now.

Anyone know if they fixed the issue with HDMI in for Virgin Media boxes? It would work at first, but after going into standby, it would just give a black screen. This is UK by the way.

Really nice update, no complaints so far. Eagerly waiting to see how twitch turns out.

Just want a screenshot feature and external storage support from future updates.

Good job MS!

Whitten: great article! We won't have friends online notifications in March. Want to get it just right. Next update

Whitten: yup -- twitch broadcasting toasts from your fav's yes -- but not friends online. that will be next month..

Sounds like he accidentally confirmed an April patch, they're on a good schedule if they can do monthly ones.

Auto sign-in without Kinect and HDD support for that one too please

Have you tried taking the HDMI cable out then back in? Not really a fix, but could have something to do with the handshake.

Whitten already said yes to frequent updates last year:

We can probably expect updates every patch Tuesday. March is an outlier due to Titanfall. It sounds like they plan on doing 2 big updates a year as well, in addition to the monthly ones.

Frequent and bi-annual? What kind of black hole shit is that lol? I guess one is for 360 and the other for the Bone. Or many small patches and a few big ones. Either way, I am happy to see the MS team being reactive to the fans.

Big updates w/major changes twice a year. Smaller updates adding in other requested features?

Not sure if there's something wrong with me for getting way more excited for updates than I should, but oh boy, can't wait to hear details about what's coming next!

I appreciate them getting all of this out fast at the start but monthly updates seems excessive to me.

I've honestly never seen anyone complain about adding in features more regularly. Everyone I know hated how long updates took on 360 to patch in/add the simplest of things
