Also you need it on for when you are watching a movie at night with the lights off so you can locate your controller and not bang into stuff ;)

I know but I love Shu's tweets. He's had some real gems in the last year or so

Yeah he tweets funny responses sometimes. Don't think it's mean spirited like some are implying though. He's just very direct. You should see how many tweets he gets a day. Half his replies are just "no" lol

But he always replies to lots of things that most normal execs wouldn't. Like you tweet him a funny gif and he might tweet you back a "lol"

I think it's pretty clear why they don't disable the light completely: You wouldn't know if the controller is on or not. The DS4 has no other status LEDs beside the lightbar.

This is actually offensive to be honest, that they would assume their consumer base is more ignorant than a toddler and unable deduce why inputs aren't registering.

Except that some customers are more ignorant than toddlers and they help create support tickets which drives up costs.

What do you mean?

If the controller is controlling, that's what tells you.

That's clumsy and doesn't solve the issue of knowing if your controller is synced, dead, or yours when playing.

Personally I think it's because they are trying to get developers to use it. If you can turn if off completely devs will be more likely to be "f- this"

I don't even understand your point.

No one cares if it lights up when you sync it, only when you're playing. Where is the failure state in that model exactly?

you all f'in crack me up. laughing so hard at work right now.

such a pointless thing to get angry about lol. I dunno, I must have a super LED reflection resistant screen or something because ive never once seen the bar on my screen and now it is right at controller level at our new house. Not mounted anymore. Still can't see anything lol.

But hey, whatever. Do continue to provide the comedy.

A richer array of options for the user would be nice, but I can live with dimming as a compromise that will presumably extend battery life, mitigate TV reflection in a dark room, and not cost Sony much effort in the way of reconfiguration.

You clearly don't have a plasma TV, then. Being ignorant suits you fine.

Jesus Geoff, really? How do you even misquote that?

Videogame journalism, ladies and gentlemen.

Do they come off perfectly? We need the light bars for VR.

They will come off but I am guessing they would be ruined. Guess I have not needed it for VR so perhaps that is the downside. Eventually everyone will have multiple controllers and maybe have one blocked and one not.

Maybe Geoff did it on purpose because he thought the backlash might help push Sony to implement the fix for real? =P

Has anyone pulled a DS4 apart to see if the device is wired such that the light can be turned off? I really don't see Sony refusing to budge on this at this point and I'm starting to wonder if the DS4 is designed such that it's impossible to prevent the LED getting power. Particularly with talk now of allowing dimming of the LED.

I would like the option to turn it off completely, but dimming it is fine too I guess. Mainly I just want it to not be a distraction when I'm playing in a dark room.

#If they can dim it, they can bin it.

Hmmm, if they can allow you to dim it, why not just allow it to be turned off? I just don't get why the option isn't there, especially when the majority of PS4 owners don't even use the PSEYE. Don't get me wrong, I think the different light colors and how they are used is cool. But not cool enough to drain my battery.

You also need an easy indication that it's ON. It's why they should've added a few extra lights, or at least lit up the PS button within reason.

And while I don't know about battery life, I think dimming will at least mitigate the issues people have. They can set the lights themselves on PC with the DS4 Xinput wrapper, set it to something like 1 in one of the three colors and see how that works out for you. It's blatantly on but it won't be illuminating rooms.

I don't think being able to turn it OFF completely is actually a good idea. It's really the only indicator you have of player 1, player 2, or whether the controller is even on.

I'm sure you'll be able to dim it quite a bit, but Sony will probably never allow it to be completely turned off.

You know what else is an indicator of what player I am? The player I'm controlling on the screen.

Most LED/LCD tvs have matte screens that don't reflect much light. Plasmas have glass screens that are typcially very glossy and reflect any and all light sources.

I have a Panasonic LED that unfortunately has a glossly glass screen--guess they use the same glass as for their plasmas. Reflection is a bitch on it. Generally not an issue as I just watch/play stuff with no lights on other than the LED backlight strip I put on the rear of the TV, and have blackout curtains on the one window in the media room for daytime use.

But the reflection of the light bar was super annoying since the bottom of the screen is lap height to my couch so the light is right on the screen all the time unless I sit at a very weird angle.

Not a huge deal though as cheap decals with PS logos took care of the issue.

This is what I think too.

Dimming it could be nice. I've never really been bothered by it, but it could cut down on the glare for those bothered by it.

It's really annoying and distracting. I don't need or or off status. It shuts off after 10 mins of no use. I don't know why they are so hesitant to shut it off.
