Nintendo employee says yesterday's Smash Bros. Direct is hiding a few things

IIRC the leak was from the same person who predicted Wii Fit Trainer (left field choice to many), so he may just be super lucky with his guesses, or he knows something.

But 0% of the characters he predicted were in the direct... I didn't read the original prediction, so I don't know if he was claiming they'd be in the direct, or just in the game at some point, but I'm doubting the authenticity.

Here's another look at the pokemon reveal, slowed down a bit for better analysis:

I think that Greninja video was an obvious Mewtwo hint. First, it looked like they were implying Mewtwo when initially shown. The video would've been even more surprising had they not shown that teaser scene but they added it anyways. Second, it's Charizard who is battling. Charizard vs. Mewtwo having an epic battle is a thing now that retroactively existed in the Red and Blue games.

Look it's even Mega-Evolving into the same Charizard that they added to the game.

The shadow over Pyrosphere was clearly a SMT4 Burroughs. Consider this in concert with the FE:A promotion a while back. Flynn and Chom clearly new comers.

The original leak was that during E3, they would show 6 characters: Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Little Mac and Mii.
3 of those characters were shown at E3, Little Mac has been shown later, and with Namco arcade game items being in the game, Pac-Man seems more than likely at this point. Mii also seems likely. Villager (on account of Sakurai saying that Animal Crossing doesn't make for a good fighter) and Wii Fit Trainer in particular were such specific choices that ended up being true that many people think (or at least thought) that the leak was correct, after all PR plans can change.
The appendix of that leak only named a few more newcomers (not that they would be shown during the Direct), and while "Pokemon from X/Y" is not very specific, I wouldn't say that it's 0%.

That said, I would take every leak or rumor with a grain of salt.

I never interpreted the spoilers as something that would be in the direct, just spoilers for the game itself.

Time will tell. I believe either melee or brawl roster was leaked early to gamefaqs, so it's possible.

Yup. It is funny to see people claiming the shadow confirms Ridley as a boss/hazard, when in fact it just makes obvious that he is playable character.

Given the context of that moment, it definitely confirms he's a boss and not a playable character. So, why do you think otherwise? Other than just wanting it for some reason?

Uh, except he specifically was showing his shadow flying around while saying "I'm pretty sure other levels are going to have boss characters like this one".

I don't know if he's in or not, but if Ridley is just a stage boss, why tease him at all? What's the real benefit there? If he was just teasing Ridley as a stage boss, it was way too obvious of a tease.

This is sakurai though, so who knows. Dude could be an assist trophy for all we know at this point.

He was talking about Yellow Devil, he said that other stages will have boss characters like Yellow Devil. And if Ridley was just a boss/stage hazard, why not outright show him? Sakurai is a troll, but I don't think that he would be that cruel to lead Ridley fans on for months. Plus, there's so many other hints for Ridley, some very direct, some indirect.
Plus, have you observed what the shadow is actually doing? Pikachu runs across the screen, and then Ridley follows up inching forward a little, and then he just sits there idly doing nothing. That doesn't seem like something a simple boss character would do, if they've already shown Yellow Devil shooting and separating/reassembling itself, and the Twinrova witches flying all over the Gerudo Valley stage and firing their spells.

Yeah, size clearly doesn't matter - when it gets in the way of gameplay Sakurai just changes the character's size so they fit better. It's the animalistic nature of the character that always made him seem unlikely. The recently announced change to Yoshi - he stands upright - and Ivysaur's (almost definite) axing seems to support the notion that characters should be Anthropomorphic to be in Smash.

Still possible though!

But then, why would Ridley ever stay on the ground long enough to engage in fisticuffs when he could just fly and blast everyone with his laser breath?

I just think this type of logic is flawed. What about Mewtwo, Metaknight or Charizard? Especially Charizard. The same type of logic applies. He doesn't have to fly indefinitely, he does like to come down and fight on land as seen in Metroid Prime and Other M. He isn't like a ghost who can just float perpetually.

Being anthropomorphic may mean a character would be easier to create but even still Ridley's body is not much different than Charizards. Donkey Kong, Diddy, and Pikachu still run around on hands and feet like Ridley potentially would. If that were ever a bad thing you'd think Sakurai would have taken DK64 inspiration and have him run only on his feet.

And just look at Shiek, for human he's even more animalistic in his animations then the actual creature characters.

Even with that said Other M gave Ridley a big human body with long arms. He's like Donkey Kong with wings and a tail. Anthropomorphic has nothing to do with it.

If Ridley does get in despite all odds against him right now, great.

Looking at the trailer again I don't think the reveal was intended to mislead anything. If you know it's Greninja going into it you can clearly see the body type being vastly different from Mewtwo's bulky build, he wasn't in a particularly Mewtwo-esque stance and the watery vortex didn't look anything like a move Mewtwo has (Shadow Ball maybe but that's a pretty big stretch when it looks like the complete opposite of how Mewtwo does it).

Honestly when I was in the IRC and people started mentioning Mewtwo I didn't think it looked anything like him at first. Sakurai might have been aware of there being a Mewtwo fan base but this reveal seemed to implicitly telegraph a lot of what Greninja is - a dual type Dark/Water Ninja Pokémon. Charizard being reconfirmed was probably just another way for him to hit two birds with one stone and his Mega evo wasn't part of the cinematic.

He's basically fucking around with people who have been whining about Ridley for the longest time. At least, that's what I got out of it.

It's just weird that the 2nd leak mentioned a bunch of characters that ended up not getting announced in the direct (Chrom, Palutena, Rhythm Heaven Guy, and the Fortune Teller Level Ambiguity of "Pokemon from X/Y" [no kidding?]) added to the fact that he failed to mention ZSS, Sheik, and Charizard being split up from their counterparts AND didn't mention Yoshi... just makes it seem like the guy knows nothing.

He's only ever mentioned newcomers, never veterans. Not in the original E3 post, not in this one. ZSS, Sheik, Charizard and Yoshi all are veterans, not newcomers.
And we only got 1 newcomer announced in the Direct, and while that specific one just hit the ambiguous prophet spot, he still was right.

Time will tell, however.

OK, OK. You got me with Yoshi being a veteran, but splitting up characters that were previously considered one and the same seems like something more than just a veteran.

But like you said, time will tell. The harder I argue this, the more crow I'll have to eat if it ends up being true.

By the way, I agree with the theory of those trophy quiz bits being hints for characters. I've been saying that in SmashGAF's thread since after the Direct. I wouldn't bank on it that Fi means a Skyward Sword character/villain, but just a Zelda character (Impa or Tingle seem just as likely tbh). But it seems to be pretty obvious hints to me. There would be no reason to do that other than just teasing future stuff.

Also, during the "Who's that character?" bit of the Metroid trophy, they play Ridley's theme. Just sayin'.

I know I am nitpicking here but do you know the backstory of Shiek? I don't want to ruin it as it may be spoiler-ish, even though it's like 16 years old. It may also have just been a typo.

I thought it was all the NFC figurines he kept holding up that will be used with the Wii U version of Smash. That's all I kept thinking.

So far the roster seem very safe as far as smash goes...waiting on the next Ness, Mr. Game and Watch, Ice Climbers, Rob, or Snake character

The Mewtwo connection is that in the Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strike Back, Mewtwo does those hand movements in order to create a storm over an ocean iirc. He has ball fingers too, so I could see why people felt the troll.

Chibi-Robo will save us.

Wii Fit Trainer is one of the most out there characters of all, but because she was one of the first reveals it doesn't really feel that way.

I think that isn't quite correct. It feels like the trophies were more a form of commentary on fan speculation. First of all, I've seen Tiki described as the Ridley of Japan. She is a popular character from a much-loved franchise that people have been clamoring to be added into Smash Bros. Her appearance was probably there to troll Japanese fans and their speculation.

The Pseudo-Palutena trophy feels like it's inclusion is meant to poke fun about the supposed Palutena leak and all of the speculation whether or not it was real or fake. So Sakurai gave us a trophy of a fake Palutena.

I think those trophies were more designed to mess with fans and feed speculation. They don't really indicate anything directly, since they can't be used as either confirmation or disconfirmation of a character's inclusion. What is interesting about the fourth trophy shown that people haven't pointed out is that those exact enemies are in game as part of the Smash Run mode, and were some of the first enemies shown for that mode, right after the trophy appeared.

I think Sakurai is using the trophies to communicate with the fans, but it is hard to tell whether or not he is giving us hints or just poking fun at us. At least we know they are in the game as trophies but we don't know whether or not they are just in as trophies or they have trophies because they appear in the game in some other role.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Arena Ferox as a stage pretty much confirmed Chrom for me, I'm not sure why nobody else seems to have gotten on board this theory yet.

He looks like it when you're going into it with the final knowledge, yea. I think a lot of people would've assumed Mewtwo because he looks to be in a cave apparently alone (series staple), looking boss as fuck (no doubt), psychic and all-knowing as hell, and curvy. Add in those qualities with how prevalent Mewtwo has been around everything Pokemon-related. He's one of the final end game activities in X/Y. He got a movie recently. He was the final part of a new mini-series. I think he was even in the TV anime. Pokemon fans at this point should be seeing Mewtwo in clouds and it should be expected by whoever made this video that people would assume Mewtwo from that clip. They're just teasing us and saving the best for last.

It's very possible Sakurai just stealth cancelled Pokemon Trainer and two other Pokemon characters that were previously playable, but instead of outright saying it, gave some more time to the terrible version of Samus he's made and made it all a joke. Haha, transformations are gone, don't worry though, sexy Samus is still in, her boobs just look better than Squirtles.

Anyway, I'm not trying to restart a Samus fight, I'm just saying - he could be that cruel.

You are aware that the leak didn't even mention the Direct, yes? Just the contents of the final game. He isn't claiming that it's exhaustive, either.

So, out of his 11 "predictions"...

Mega Man
Wii Fit Trainer
Villager
Little Mac
Pokémon from X and Y
Pacman
Mii
Chrom
Shulk
Palutena
Chorus Men

Four are unambiguously right, with one being vague enough for the issue not to be cut and dried. Fair enough. But look at those four! Villager was unlikely enough, but no one guessed Wii Fit Trainer. We're hardly talking about a shot in the dark here. A bit of healthy scepticism never hurt anyone, but this is slightly silly.

So far the roster seem very safe as far as smash goes...waiting on the next Ness, Mr. Game and Watch, Ice Climbers, Rob, or Snake character

What is Wii Fit Trainer if not exactly that?

You could make the argument for Greninja too, if you felt so inclined.

Over/under on Jigglypuff being back this time around? I'd be quite shocked if she wasn't, but at the same time that would make five Pokemon characters...

That would be less playable Pokemon than there are in Brawl.

Jigglypuff honestly should be in if Sheik of all characters can stand on her own out of nothing but Smash Bros. precedence.
