Nintendo employee says yesterday's Smash Bros. Direct is hiding a few things

Sorry if this has been mentioned but I noticed this during the direct.

2 Player 2's? 5 player?

Player # 2 is Mario and then there is another # 2, which only means Mario has used the Cherry Item from Super Mario 3D World, which lets you dublicate yourself. Obviously, his dublicated self can't be seen because of the explosion.

Nah it indicates who did the finishing blow to Yellow Devil therefore the "owner" of the explosion.

I hope that image is not implying that stupid Chrom/Lucina Ice Climbers style duo idea.

Given transforms are gone I guess armour damage is not happening as I would have loved to see Masked Marth as a alt for Marth...you can geuss what happens with damage
hi Lucina

Here's another look at the pokemon reveal, slowed down a bit for better analysis:

I think this is important
Not going to watch the gif on loop 1,000,000 times but assuming those are all Pokeball Pokemon that appear in this game. Spewpa, Inklay and Swirlix have not been seen in-game, right? There is also confirmation of some old ones returning like Gardevour, Goldeen (yay) and Togepi.

The video was exactly 39 minutes and 3 second long long

In binary this would be 0011 1001 0011. Adding the prefix 0110 to each one i.e. 01100011 01101001 01100011 would change these to letters givng us the characters "cic". What is CIC? Well it is the Checking Integrated Circuit, the lockout chip designed for the NES.

So in conclusion the secret message is that Smash will be region locked.

After slowly going through the direct, I didn't find anything super interesting that hasn't been mentioned, although it seems players flash when they ko an opponent.

There's a Ridley-shaped hole in the wall on Pyrosphere. Ridley was fought as a boss in the Pyrosphere in Other M. In the Smash Direct, they showed Ridley's shadow flying above the battlefield while stating "boss characters will appear on other stages as well".

Unless Alfonzo plans on moonlighting as a big purple dragon, I don't see how there's any other way to interpret this.

Meta Ridley?

Meta Ridley?

Well it is either Meta or Other M. Stage and quick flash of grey and similar texture points to Other M though. However if we want to make him a stage hazard like in Dead or Alive Dimensions why not show him? Unless Sakurai gets a kick out of sadistically trolling Metroid fans.

When I heard that Dedede will only throw those spike things now I thought that maybe Waddle Dee might show up as a fighter. I'm pretty sure he's a popular pick in Japan. Also with Pits final smash being changed and removing Palutena I think her chances of being playable went up too.

I'm sure this was already covered though.

I just hope they give him a better Final Smash....

They changed Kirby's final smash, this clearly means that Cauldron is a new playable character.

In fact he's probably the new Kirby rep instead of Meta-knight.

Is there a fire and ice theme? Check the logos. Fire on the 3DS, Ice on the WiiU. Has that always been like that? Fire 3DS with a Summer release date and Ice on the WiiU when it comes out in Winter.

There definitely was a theme in the last cinematic of the direct, with Greninja spraying water over Mario's and Charizard's fireballs. When I noticed that it made me think of possible elemental attacks in the game (and the corresponding relationship between attacks/defenses/heroes), but now that you pointed it out it may have just been symbolic as with the logos of the games.

The 3 in 3DS is red. The U in Wii U is blue. They are basically the system colours. Notice in the Direct that 3DS exclusive things have a red banner, Wii U exclusives are red and shared content is a red blue gradient.

Red and blue for the system colours. I think this duality will also manifest within the game. For example, it helps explain why final destination looks the way it does (the stage itself is split up into red and blue elements, and the background has red and blue stars).

anyone else notice how during some of the Assist Trophy reveals there seemed to be only one character on the entire stage besides the AT?

For example, megaman and dark samus..

Is there a simple explanation for this?

I think the idea of Ridley in SSB is cool, but this image just makes me question how he would ever fit in the game. His large, spindly body (and wings) doesn't exactly lend itself to a brawler game.

It would be difficult, but not impossible, to retool his proportions and design for a fighter. Something closer to this concept art would be a solid fit I think.

The things to notice here are the leg design and the neck. Ridley's traditional appearance has him with a long, 3 jointed neck. This would naturally propose a problem since his neck would have to be folded at all times in order to not make him seem absurdly lanky. This design removes the problem by making it a solid, 2 jointed tube.
The more frog-like leg design (see Greninja) lets Ridley's legs be longer without necessarily taking up more space, and gives the added bonus of making him look like he's ready to spring into action at any moment.
Those two design concessions would allow him to still look properly proportioned while only making him a bit larger than Bowser.

The last two problems I have yet to figure out a solution for are how to make his wings less obstructive and what the Ideal gait would be for him (Upright, all fours, hovering)

we are obviously missing some of the connection stuff. Maybe both games will have the same roster - but only if you own both games. ;)

Jon Snow as playable character confirmed.

I can see them doing that for customization options and trophies, but gating characters like that would conflict with the fairness of competition Sakurai is emphasizing with the inclusion of glory mode. I can totally see him releasing new characters for Smash Wii U and having those characters appear as free DLC for the 3DS version due to the staggered release.

Another thing I that may deserve discussion is over the shoulder camera angles, which appeared a few times in the Direct, such as when throwing the Beetle from SS or introducing Little Mac's wireframe skin.

Maybe this is something that will show up during gameplay?

that trophy shit is really stupid.he was just showing off some of the trophies like they already do on the "pic of the day ",but they needed a reason to show them,so they put the "gess who this is" game, that's all

EatChildren

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I feel Ridley's size is less a problem than his profile, which is very odd compared to the rest of the roster. That being said, Smash fully embraces unique qualities in fighter build and function. That's part of the series charm, and Smash 4 looks to be pushing that heavily. As a large, unusual character, Ridley would fit jut fine.

You'd have to be pretty stupid or not at all aware of the rumours/leaks to miss the blatantly obvious Palutena fake-out.

Ridley needs to not be so skinny , that's probably the big problem , plus his tail is long, longer then char god

wings too

Somewhat, but some versions of Ridley have a reasonably sized midsection (Omega Ridley and Other M Ridley, not to mention Brawl's own version of Ridley which is only thin at the center of the waist)
http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130317005317/metroid/images/f/f6/Omega_ridley_death.png http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080902035449/metroid/images/1/12/RidleySSBB.jpg (Linked for big-ass images)

The tail doesn't necessarily have to be an active hitbox at all times. I do believe Charizard's works much the same way in that his tail only becomes an active hit/damage box during attacks (someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Couldnt the same be said about Charizard?

Charizard is a lot stockier, and his wings are folded over most of the time.

Ridley by comparison looks very stretched out and pointy. To be honest I'd say he needs a redesign, not just for Smash but for a new Metroid game
if that ever comes
.

Over/under on Jigglypuff being back this time around? I'd be quite shocked if she wasn't, but at the same time that would make five Pokemon characters...

If you count the Pokemon trainer from Brawl as three separate characters, that's still less I believe than Brawl. I truly believe both Mewtwo and Jiggs will be back.

No there isn't, Other M Ridley is a different Ridley from the rest of the series.

The Ridley in Metroid Fusion's also a copy. And there's a handful of robot Ridleys out there. Plus I'm not 100% sure how he came back after being blown up in Metroid 1. So many Ridleys

Pretty sure it goes Ridley>Prime 1 and 3 stuff>Ridley(prob Space Pirate recreation as well as true death)>Other M Clone> Parasite X clone of the Other M petrified clone(implying if Other M is canon)

And Space Pirates seem to have a memory backup and ways to process a cloned Ridley at will. Never more then one at a time though.

Someone mentioned that he could be the antithesis of Little Mac. Air-focused, weak on the ground.

"hiding" things? Snake Confirmed.

Funny thing about that Brawl E3 trailer, you could actually see Snake's box hiding in the background during a shot (I believe during the Nintendogs Assist Trophy sequence) before his actual reveal. They do like to be sneaky like that.

That's an interesting theory. Feels like after getting rid of Pit's flying move though they are steering away from 'flying' characters.
I think they just wanted to give Pit something more accurate to his latest game. I doubt Jigglypuff and Kirby aren't going to be able to float/fly around.

"You're lying! It was not an earthquake, it wasn't a TYPHOON...Because what's really happening is that you're hiding something out there!"

"AND I HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!" - That trailer is sogood.gif

OT: I can't imagine there actually is anything people have missed in the Direct, you don't say people have missed things a day after it was shown.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I'm hoping Pac-Man makes it in as a playable character. I'd like to see some more Namco stuff in the game. I know people talk about the 'purity' of the series but I love the 3rd party additions... a dream of mine would be a crossover of all the classic Japanese gaming companies and a variety of nostalgic characters in one ultimate Smash.

I wonder if that "who's that pokemon?" style trophy quiz will be an actual feature in the game.

I could see it happening with the weird stuff they put in Brawl.
