Mario Kart 8 |OT| 8 oW

That hopping trick doesn't look even close to snaking and it seems like it only provides a minimal advantage. I could see it leading to higher average finishes in most races, but with items on you'll still get pelted by blue or red shells, especially if you are getting a larger lead which will knock you back within range of the other players. Snaking, in contrast, made it virtually impossible for non snaking players to even come close to winning even if they had the best item luck possible.

Got me my Gold Wheels and Gold Kart. Now just to grind out 10,000 coins for the glider.

Think I only need 8200 more ;_;

Can you guys check out this eBay listing for me? It's the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle for £170 (it's £240 in the shops). I'm just wondering if there are any red flags other than the price? If it's legit I'd buy it right now.

Going through his ratings, he almost exclusively sold one item and hundreds of that one. With a quite a few pretty severe negative ratings. I'd stay away.

Just realized I show up as Indelicato online, pissed though that the update is causing my issues with my USB HD, so I am going to have to figure out a different solution... frustrating.

Very mature.

Anyways.. I watched the WR holders for the first time this morning and was wondering why they were hopping. I thought maybe it was to keep their finger active on the drift button or they were just being cheeky. I didn't know it gave an advantage. My roommate is going to love this. The fucker already trails everybody with his fatass Wario. Nobody will catch him now. Aha.

If there was a criticism I'd have for the game, I wish it had an options menu where I could turn the volume down on the music a bit. The music seems really loud compared to the characters, who I can usually barely hear most games.

Jumping after a boost? "Snake hoping" (terrible name I must say)? Wow, I do that sometimes unintentionally. It's just instinct...sorta.

I'm really liking MK8's online.

TBH this is no where as bad as snaking in MKDS.

this is what I don't get.

snaking you had zero.. ZERO chance of winning without it. The big goose egg. It didn't take seconds off the track time but half minutes or more. I remember one of the first times I played MKDS and driving (what I thought) was a near perfect race and the first 3 places were almost 3/4 of a lap ahead of me. I assumed they were using a gameshark or such.

This isn't usable everywhere. Doesn't bypass track mechanics/layouts. and on a straight away neck and neck with someone looks like it MIGHT put the one person a second or two ahead of the other one (which is still within shot of most weapons).

I can see the frustration of someone who doesn't want to bother with advanced techniques in a game.. but again that goes to me post above. Somehow competitive Nintendo titles draw out the most competitive online gaming scenes. Seriously Nintendo should know this by now and just have ranked and ladder modes in all of their games.. otherwise the default "casual" mode just turns into the haves and have nots (or mores appropriately the dos and do nots).

Basically only an effective time trails technique. Unless you're somehow miles ahead in first (which is very unlikely given online's hecticness), I can't imagine this technique helping you gain any sort of lead when you're going to be pelted with items nigh-constantly.

As someone who was a very proficient snaker in MKDS, this comes nowhere near close to what snaking let you do. You could lap people who didn't snake very easily on some courses in MKDS. This technique won't let you get that far ahead.

This is a very early overreaction to be honest. And it only is an overreaction because of snaking in MKDS. Which again, this isn't anything close that. You could snake an entire course -- straightaways included -- this technique only let's you maintain a longer boost across straightaways and corners, it doesn't let you do another boost in succession.

That seems like the smart thing to do, I guess I just needed to hear it from others even though I knew it in my heart.

Didn't really get into MK DS' online scene, but after looking into it, it's clear that this is nowhere near as bad as snaking.

At the same time, I think everyone should be free to feel the way they want to about the hopping thing. No need to affront each other.

Agreed. Even though I would do the opposite and turn the music up. :p

Another go at that Mushroom Cup in 150cc, another loss in Sweet Sweet Canyon. I wonder how many times more I can stand this before throwing in the towel, haha. It gets tiring to do Mario Kart Stadium and Water Park over and over again just to end up losing at the third track :(

It was an exploit unintended by the developers. Just because it's the only thing that makes the game good doesn't change that.

I dunno, half the fun of video games is their emergent qualities

Good developers understand this and balance around or exploit the little things that appear when the game is actually played to make the final product better

I don't know if Capcom ever made a comment about combos, but if you don't disown something that makes your game awesome if someone takes the time to learn how to do it consistently, you can suddenly make serendipity look like genius

Watch out GAF! Steve is about to join the racing again! Pink Gold Peach ALL DAY.

Hands off my girl, man

I picked up the game today. Loving the hell out of it so far. It's breathtakingly gorgeous. I have one major issue, though.

Five babies. Seven Koopa Kids. So explain to me how they could possibly omit this ice cold motherfucker right here.

I loved playing as him in Mario Kart Wii. Whatever, I can't wait for Mario Kart 9 when we get to play as Baby Waluigi.

EDIT: I can't count.

Practice the track in Time Trial if you have such big problems with it.

Just to point out. This isn't completely true. One the flatter tracks? Sure, nigh impossible to beat a snaker on Luigi's Raceway without snaking yourself. But for the more complex levels, like Yoshi's Raceway GCN. The track is so windy that power sliding every turn is pretty much snaking. Sure, even on the more complex levels there is a straight away or two where the snaker might make up a bit of time, but that is such a small difference to make up.

It's seven Koopalings.

They're also all superior to Bowser Jr.

Woo, finally came in 1st in an online race! Was in the lead for most of the race even after several blue shells. Is Pink Gold Peach really that good, or did I just luck out with who I was racing?

I'm doing much better now than yesterday, but it seems that the CPU won't let me win the track and is unleashing a whole lot of weapons against me in order to do so (blue shell, lightning, red shells and that freaking useless coin).

It's really hard but I'm hanging in there!

Use max acceleration

Yeah that's another way to do it. If I lose once again this time around, I'll try doing that.

I'm in the same boat, although I've probably made it harder for myself as I'm determined to do them all with just Mario in the standard kart with standard mods.

I mean, could a game be more bare bones than this? They couldn't have spent more than a year working on this. There is so much missing and so much that could have made this a much more complete and exciting package. Instead though it's $60 to play MKWii in HD. Really.

LOL, you don't know anything about game development if you think that.

Dull roster, characters still dont have their own special abilities (if frog suit mario could hop higher and get better boosts, if ice mario could freeze the track...), no stat tracking online, no leaderboards, no battle mode specific arenas, no track editor, no reward for 3 stars, no special unlockable elite difficult track, like say champions roads in 3D World, antigravity really adds nothing to the gameplay, its a pointless gimmick that you barely notice when playing since the camera rotates with you.

Not sure if serious. If yes, may god have mercy with your soul...

I'm with you in regards to the baby characters being lame. I disagree completely about Bowser Jr. I've hated the character since his introduction in Sunshine and am glad to see him getting shunned here. The Koopalings already had a far better Junior in the form of Morton Koopa Jr.

Man a Heavy Wave-Hopping is like... I can't even catch up as a Medium doing the same.

All the issues with it seem to be with Heavies more than the tech itself.

Complains about "8" koopalings in the game...
... wants Bowser Jr in.
