Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

While the damage numbers aren't too bothersome, I do agree that there should be an option to turn them off. All they really is superfluous information that doesn't tell me much.

x2. Watching all the streams they can really (imo) get in the way of a clear sight picture on your enemy.

Please Bungie.... give us the option to disable... at least in PvP.

Happy Birthday KeRaSh! Hope you get a code and got my fingers crossed for tomorrow! !

Thanks! I'm cautiosly optimistic. If me and my brother both end up getting codes we might spend quite some time teaming up over the weekend. :)
Maybe we can all get a GAF thing going.

Oh god. Remember when we had intense gunfights with other people? Now it's pew -> dead; pew -> dead

The generation of reward metrics is the worse that happened to gaming for me.

Have you guys played or even watched multiplayer yet? The TTK is more along the lines of Halo not CoD (from all i've seen). It takes a decent amount of time/bullets to take down another player. MUCH more than the most current MP FPS games.

Alpha codes begin to be sent out on Thursday 12 (Noon) PDT (8pm UK) until Friday 12.01am PDT (8am UK) .

If you don't get one between then you're not in. Website says it's a 3 day Alpha.

I should have registered, but I know there's a chance I won't get much time to play and I didn't want to steal the spot from someone who would get more use from it (and give more valuable feedback to Bungie).

Ok let's say I really suck at FPS. If I level up like in RPG's will this affect my stats and I will be better against lower leveled enemies?

Same here. I'm from the UK and never managed to get into an alpha yet. Hoping this is my first *crosses fingers, rubs rabbits foot and grasps a four leaf clover*

Yea. You'll without a doubt mow them down faster due to the fact that you get stronger weapons and gear as you level. That's one reason people didn't realize things die so fast when watching. When maxed out in the alpha you're level 8 and a lot of the enemies are level 4's and below for a large part of the area you can patrol.

I don't know how the PvP mechanics work, but is it possible that at higher levels with more skills, higher tier armor, gear, etc, the battles would last longer and be less COD, or does PvP ignore your gear?

Good to know.

Just a quick one. I noticed the game enters third person when in the tower, riding a bike and doing a super charge. Are there any other bits you can do in third person? Exploring etc...

Competitive multiplayer wise I wonder how much they'll change between the alpha and the final release.

From what I've seen, shotguns seem OP; everyone can have one and it's not completely point blank for a 1 shot kill. In Halo (I know, I know, it's not Halo, but still) shotguns were pickups and you had to be point blank for a kill.

I also hope they increase the general kill time ceiling; with all the power weapons/supers/upgrades in this game, you'd think the base kill time would be on par with Halo.

Still looks great though.

It tells you immediately if you're prepared for what you're taking on. If you attack those ?? Level enemies.. you do almost no damage, shown by the health bar and damage numbers. It's a clear sign of "you're not ready for this yet." Without them, players could end up wasting their own time dying over and over again trying to use skill to beat these guys.

In PvP I could see the damage numbers not being necessary. Unless there's some PvP mode that requires a PvE like damage race (Each side trying to blow up the enemies reactor or something) then there's not really a reason to have the damage numbers as long as there's a hit marker or something of the sort.

What's with the ADS hate? I'll never understand it. Actually aiming the firearm, well... it usually improves accuracy. Firing from the hip, which is arguably instinctive-aiming, makes sense in only the closest of encounters.

For me, I just prefer the Halo style shooter without ADS. I get that ADS makes sense but I just really like the flow of a Halo firefight. I hope Destiny has that same cadence. It seems to, from the videos I've seen.

Understandable. The thing we have to remember though is that this isn't Halo. I agree adding ADS to Halo is wrong because it's just something Halo has never had. The feel of Halo was long ago established. With this new franchise it can do it's own thing and establish it's own feel. Bungie obviously wants ADS in this new franchise and I'm ok with that. In fact now like with Halo once this is established with ADS then if they remove it in a sequel then it would feel wrong.

Now on the damage numbers I agree. Personally I don't want those but meh I've played other games with them so it doesn't bother me that much. I would love an option though to turn them off.

I do think the health bar is pretty important. But the dmg numbers themselves really don't do much. If you have the healthbar, you don't need big numbers popping up everywhere to tell you that you're not doing dmg. Not to mention that anyone with half a brain will very quickly figure out that mobs at much higher lvl than themselves aren't a good idea to engage.

I think it looks amazing, cannot wait to have a go.

There's just one really obvious problem that sticks out like a swore thumb; ADS needs to go. It's a mismatch with a bungie shooter mechanics and it just shouldn't be there.

Bungie should look to the mistakes that 343 made with H4, trying to CODify it.

They should stick to what made us all love bungie shooters in the first place.

This vid of the Strike on Legend difficulty is pretty damn great,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwK9qbLFlGQ

That's a lot of insanity, and it seems like it requires communication and teamwork.

The death mechanic seems a little forgiving though, especially since you just go back to checkpoint, I wonder if there will be an "Iron" skull style equivalent.

I am sure i saw on one strike if you die too many times it ends. Maybe a life system that shares between players?

Oh it does. On Legend you will get your ass kicked quick if you don't clean up the waves on enemies. That's easier said and done too as they're almost all elites. It's damn fun. I really can't imagine it on a tougher difficulty but I hear they're adding at least one more difficulty due to folks in studio thinking that Legend is too easy. This is why I see myself playing tons of strikes. They're just insane fun.

Nope. What happens is if everyone dies it will restart at last checkpoint. I've been in one where the other two weren't as leveled and we died a ton. As long as one person is alive you can keep respawning. That's one of the reasons on Legend it's so fun.

Cross posting my initial impressions after playing the Alpha for a bit now. I'll be able to shed some light on things if people have individual questions about this build.

Player Customization:
Huge. This is the first thing you do upon entering the Alpha. Create your Guardian's Race, Class, make a face, hair color, eye color, makeup and much more. Once you hit submit on these options you cannot return back to this menu, choose wisely.

First Mission:
Upon entering the world of Destiny, you'll spawn in Old Russia on a level three Story mission that walks you through the basic fundamentals of how to use the game to your advantage. Things like spawning your Ghost and using waypoints to find your way. Knowing when your Super is ready, picking up loot and equipping new things, finding other players and battling bosses.

As someone that's Halo driven mindeset, Destiny is DIFFERENT game. You cannot "halo" it up and use a "one gun" mentality. You're forced to think of on your feet and use different combinations for different scenarios with your fireteam. The beauty of Destiny is that you're challenged to find the right combination of attack/defense. You have to analyze the right time when you attack, and when to run. It's not always to your benefit to pursue an enemy, maybe you're not high enough level or don't have the best weapons match, or maybe just ran out of ammo!

The Gameplay:
It's fast. In the open world scenario's you're tasked with either walking around endlessly shooting enemies and finding loot and enjoying the view or you can start up a beacon mission and enjoy it with your fireteam. Missions get more difficult as you progress in rank, and depending on the playspace that you're in.

It's easy to jump in with new players. You can be off on your own adventure and find other players to party up with. The best part is that you don't HAVE to join up in a fireteam, though if you do, you're guaranteed to stay with that player until you decide to part ways.

You have your sparrow to navigate across large gaps/areas. Just found out recently you can use emotes when you're on the sparrow (forward/left/right), super cool.

Public events are rare as it believe the game determines if it has the right amount of players in a specific area, within a time period and it will kick one in. My first public events was to clear 3 waves of enemies within a playspace. I nearly got my ass handed to me. The AI in this game is definitely much more response than what you're use to in Halo.

The Tower:
The tower is AWESOME! One of my favorite places to visit. It's quiet but can get hype active. Meet up with others, Pick up bounties for rewards, sit and watch the view and I love the day/night cycle of this playspace. At first I was confused because there were TOO MANY things you can do. Bungie does a nice job of displaying "Hey you should go here" by placing a green notification over a vendor's head if you have something new that you can do.

This is a good place for organizing a party of friends before you head back to orbit and go on a new mission. There are weapon, engram, and class specific vendors as well as ones for individual factions, spaceships, Crucible (PvP), notes, Vanguard, player emblems and more. As you find things in the wild, you can turn them in to get glimmer as a reward, then purchase that sweet armor you've seen that other guy wearing.

Destiny is best enjoyed with friends. While you can go off on your own adventure, it's unbelievably fun when you enjoy it with your buddies. You will die as a group and back up to the last checkpoint, but when you're just trying to run through and accomplish that mission, while communicating each other in relationship to your abilities (Anyone have a Super?) it's a satisfying experience.

Dear reader let me warn you, it's extremely easy to get addicted to the player progression system in Destiny. In the Alpha you're capped at level 8, you cannot proceed. However you can see armor/weapons for those beyond level 8. Bungie is good at teasing you for more. You'll also be thinking you're hot shit, and all of a sudden a new player jumps into the tower with his fireteam and has MUCH cooler gear than you. You now want to go find it.

I cannot wait for the public release of this as I'm curious on HOW MUCH more populated the areas are going to be. Right now since a specific game population, most of us haven't seen this game when it's being hammered by thousands of gamers.

If you have questions about the Alpha Build and my experience, ask them! Please note these are initial impressions. I haven't even discussed PvP, I will get to that soon.

-Spawn

Thanks for that. It's given me the best sense of how the game will play out of anything I've read or heard so far.

Well, it depends on the way it is implemented. I, for one, would have no problems if ADS was implemented like in Bioshock, where it is completely optional to use it (it only gives you a little bit more zoom, and reduces your aiming sensitivity, but doesn't change the level of accuracy of the weapons)

But there's another, way more annoying kind of ADS aiming, the kind that use most shooters nowadays. It basically penalizes your accuracy when not using ADS, forcing you to use it most of the time, wich totally sucks. Not to talk about the fact that going into ADS slows down your character, which sucks even more. If you also add the accuracy penalties for other actions, like jumping, then you can have a pretty good idea why people would hate ADS.

There's also the fact that Bungie was one of the very few developers that still made FPS's without ADS (a dying breed, sadly) which, in this case, makes it even more worse.

You could say ADS adds realism, but in the case of Destiny, a sci-fi / fantasy game where things like "space magic" exist, it wouldn't make much sense. And there's also the fact that there are much better ways to introduce the same kind of gameplay restrictions in way more interesting ways. See CS:GO, for example; while today's ADS shooters only require you to press LT, Counter-Strike actually makes you slow down your character and crouch to be accurate, and all that with the added benefit of not having to have half the screen obscured by your own weapon.

All these wonderful screens and impressions...is it Thursday yet?!

I was really expecting Bungie to announce a CE for Destiny at E3 but no dice. What gives? urk or anyone else able to comment if there will be an announcement coming or no CE this time round?

See, maybe i've been playing too many roguelikes, but I'd love a true failure state.

If you have the healthbar, you don't need big numbers popping up everywhere to tell you that you're not doing dmg. Not to mention that anyone with half a brain will very quickly figure out that mobs at much higher lvl than themselves aren't a good idea to engage.

Well without the dmg numbers, FPS logic would be that there must be a trick to killing the enemy by finding a weakpoint. The thought process for many would be something like, "Maybe headshots? Maybe from behind? Maybe that glowy bit on their armor?" There's a contingent of players that would take it as a challenge and spend more time than they should, dying to those enemies trying to take them out, even with a big level difference. It happens regularly in traditional MMO's.

I agree that in the long run people will figure it out.. but with the ability to openly explore the world, people could potentially have that really negative experience quite quickly.

Damage numbers are also a very clear way to show your improvement, even when it's gradual.

Ahh, it must have been them all dying and choosing not to respawn then. That makes a bit more sense now.

Sigh. Every post I read from you guys makes me want to get the game even more. But I'd have to get a PS4 first.

This is like everything I want in a shooter. I'm a HUGE fan of Borderlands but having that wrapped in a more serious package with a larger variety of stuff to do just sounds amazing.

Ha! I was doing some exploring in Old Russia and went to an area I haven't been to in awhile to see if I had miss anything. And sure enough, I did!

I had cleared out a group of enemies near a ledge when my radar was telling me I was standing on top of an enemy. I could also hear its roar. I searched around the area and, to my dismay, couldn't find this guy. Finally I looked over the edge and saw a ledge. I jumped down and there was this Level 10 Hive dude that I was doing any damage at all. Luckily, I had some rocket launcher ammo, and when he came out of his little hole, the force of my rocket pushed him over the side. Then he died. 8)

A neat little hole he was in, I tell you.
Just a quick one. I noticed the game enters third person when in the tower, riding a bike and doing a super charge. Are there any other bits you can do in third person? Exploring etc...
Only when you're about to do your power (whatever that is). The transition from third to first is very seamless.

It's a clear sign of "you're not ready for this yet." Without them, players could end up wasting their own time dying over and over again trying to use skill to beat these guys.
I feel like you could convey this information by showing the level of enemies. But I see where you're coming from. They can be useful in that instance, yeah.
What's with the ADS hate? I'll never understand it. Actually aiming the firearm, well... it usually improves accuracy. Firing from the hip, which is arguably instinctive-aiming, makes sense in only the closest of encounters.
ADS slows the player down and makes her less maneuverable. The reason why ADS is a problem in Destiny is because those characteristics of ADS conflict with the chaotic nature of Destiny's combat (how the enemies behave, and so on), especially when you have to use it to be accurate.

Just because it's realistic doesn't mean it's more fun.

Yea that could be it. It's imperative that at least one stays alive because if all 3 die it then says that the darkness is coming and won't let anyone respawn. Then you restart at the checkpoint. Usually with the boss back at full. So it pays to keep at least one person alive on Legend for that very reason.

Oops damn double posted again. sorry about that.

You don't have to. It's coming out on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360. So you could always get a current gen version. Might not be as pretty but the gameplay should be intact.

Do you think Bungie will add options for players who like to play a support style class at all? Maybe faster picking up downed people or a ranged items to pick people up? Portable shield, ammo drops or health drops? Really interested to see how far they will go.

I don't think so. I just don't see them doing a support type class. Now I don't work for them so who knows what they're talking about internally at the studio. Also hell who knows what future expansions, games, etc will have. Maybe with Destiny 2 they'll decide to or something. Who knows.
