'The Last of Us: Remastered' coming to PS4, July 2014, [1080p, targeting 60 fps]

It's a nice idea, but you're just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

I believe we're going to see Uncharted 4 in the fall of 2015, and TLOU2 in the fall of 2016. I do think it's possible Uncharted gets handed off to another team at that point, and ND gets to introduce another new IP.

But, I also wouldn't be shocked to see them make Uncharted 5. Maybe Sony even allows ND to expand to three projects at a time. That would allow them to keep Uncharted and TLOU in house, and also introduce a new IP on PS4.

I'm fully aware that I'm setting myself up for disappointment. Sequel culture is too stronk.

Not that I necessarily have anything against sequels. I'm anticipating lots of em this year and next. A fair compromise would be more "spiritual sequels." New skin, upgraded and slightly different mechanics, but the same spirit. Think Bloodborne, something like Alan Wake, or Kamiya's entire post-DMC career. Similar to how a movie director can have lots of different projects but they all retain those special qualities. Hell, for a closer comparison, think Uncharted --> The Last of Us. It's still a distinctly Naughty Dog experience that builds off everything they learned in Uncharted, but it's different.

Can they really afford to basically leave TLoU IP hanging for 3+ years without a game though?

Unless they increase their production pace, it'll be way too long without TLoU2 that the franchise's momentum may not be there anymore by the time the sequel releases.

Despite what the major publishers would have you believe, the more time that passes between releases, the more the anticipation grows for the next game. It gives more people a chance to play the first title, and by the time the new game comes out everyone is really hungry for it.

If Ubisoft only released Assassin's Creed bi-yearly, I think they'd see much higher sales numbers.

Would it really matter if it's a highly anticipated sequel to a huge hit? They'll build momentum just like they did with the first game.

Nope, the train and car chase scene was designed by Jakob Minkoff, lead designer for TLoU.

Amy Hennig also had a major part in creating those sequences as well IIRC

Have they shown any actual gameplay footage of this yet? Would love to see something like the bookstore running at 60 fps since it chugged in the PS3 version.

If ND makes a new Ip this gen it will be a VR title I believe. Druckman and Bruce tweeted that they were brainstorming ideas at the airport after the Morpheus unveil.

Not really, if we look at ND's overall process.

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/10/30/tech/gaming-gadgets/uncharted-3/

When the developers of the "Uncharted" video games sat down to brainstorm their latest adventure, the first thing they decided was that they had to have a cargo plane and a cruise ship.

No matter that they didn't have a story, script or setting yet.

"Yeah, that would be pretty cool. Let's do it," Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra recalled saying then. In an interview this week, he and creative director Amy Hennig offered a look at his studio's unusual storyboarding process.
Their goal at the start of each game's production is to "try to come up with these set-piece moments that aren't just for show," Hennig said. "In many ways, they become the signature pieces of the game."

Those segments also take the longest to plan and build, which is why they need to be conceived as early in the process as possible.

http://zipeters.com/2013/03/14/naughty-dogs-uncharted-level-design-process/

Typically the general storytelling goal is established with the Creative Director and the Co-President to form a high level Chapter Outline that describes the key things they want to happen.

This is then developed and elaborated upon in a collaborative environment with a designer designated as the point person, charged with overseeing the level to completion and co-ordinating the involvement of other disciplines who will be contributing to it. Meetings that include the Point Designer, Lead Designers, Game Director and sometimes the Combat Designer (but also open invitation to anyone else who wishes to participate) are held to work out other high level details for the level. This includes information such as the location, major plot points, key gameplay moments, player objectives, combat pacing and special “wow” moments.

There's another article I can't find, but I definitely recall it being stated that because ND has such a flat structure of game design, where the game designers are assigned a level to complete and that level design is basically a representation of that designer's work. It's their resume through and through.

This might have been asked, but is it the same trophy list as the PS3 version, as in can I continue, or I start from scratch?

It sounds like he never played a 60fps game before. I hope he is kidding

Or... sounds like he struggled together with his friends for years to optimize four ND resource-heavy games on PS3 to at least work at 720p30, and now he can enjoy game from their studio that works at 1080p60.

I am happy for him. :)

People will often cite UC sales as evidence that Sony would never shelve the franchise, but ND have proven their value to deliver big sellers consistently, with or without the franchises.

Well, it should be said that there's a distinction to make between "The Uncharted IP is too popular for Sony to shelve it" and "The Uncharted IP is too popular for Sony to allow Naughty Dog to leave it behind". I firmly believe that those who are expecting Uncharted 4 to be ND's last Uncharted game and the last entry in the franchise are in for a bit of a shock in the not-too-distant future.

Edit: Speaking of The Last of Us PS4, though, there hasn't been any word on a bundle, has there? Valve moving Steam's Summer Sale forward to June again caught me off-guard, so I'm toying with the idea of using my tax refund to buy a PS4.

Still sounds he actually needed to be convinced that 60FPS feels superior. Which is strange for a high profile developer.

Only way to solve that is to make ND get even bigger so they have 2 full teams .
The mostly new team can work on UC and we can also get TLOU or new IP from the next team.

I don't think so, but it seems like they're still doing some last minute optimizations.

A naughty dog developer just tweeted that he played the game, 1080p 60 FPS and all.

Sounds like he wants all future ND games to be 60fps. Good news for UC4. If UC4 can have world leading graphics at 1080p 60fps with good gameplay, then there will be no question who the top developer is in this industry.

I am sure there will be those that still question the gameplay, but ND has always delivered in that department to me.

I would expect Sony to leave ND to do what is best. But the risk with a major franchise like UC is that 60fps is 'leaving money on the table' in terms of how the screenshots will look etc. I'm sure there will be a temptation (at least from Sony) to want to have images that clearly differentiate from the competition.

But the screenshots already dominate everything else :p

$54.99 now in the Canadian PSN store. Still not sure that's enough for me to double dip. I think $40 might get me there.

I'm more excited to try the multiplayer in 60 fps tbh. I rarely played online multiplayer last gen but TLOU really sucked me in. Have a lot of good memories from last summer playing it with GAF.

More and more people seem to be interested in the MP this time. Which is awesome cause it's a great MP. Hopefully it will be so successful that companies will work on ore third party shooters instead of first party shooters, I always preferred TPS over FPS.

All I need now is for the people behind the The Last of Us MP to take over the SOCOM license or for H-Hour (heard it may show up at E3 2015) to be really good.

Add me to the TLoU GAF list for MP. Every SOCOM gamer should be playing this.

So I pre-ordered it for $59.99 yesterday and a few hours later they lower it to $49.99 and won't refund the difference. Wow. What a piece of shit customer relations policies they have. Absolutely baffling and unacceptable. No wonder their stock is falling off a cliff with bs like this.

"For the gamers" my ass.

you cant blame them, READ the the digital policy before buying something, it clearly states that, so is more your fault than theirs, does it suck? of course it does but the blame is on you, that's your digital future FTW

Can't you cancel PSN preorders? If not wtf as pretty much every other retailer does. Heck even the Vita psn store allows you to cancel preorders.

Can you not cancel the pre-order, have the money returned to your PSN account, and then pre-order again at $50? This isn't as ideal as having the money refunded to your credit/debit card, but it's better than nothing.

It's a PRE-ORDER. If it was a PURCHASE I would be OK with it. But for a product not even released? It's absolutely pathetic from every possible view. Obviously they don't believe in their products.

Origin lets you buy the game and play it for 24 hours and return it, DIGITALLY. That's a REAL digital future. Sony's just shit at customer relations, not matter how much you try to spin it.

I would understand if the game was already downloaded on his PS4 and played for a few minutes before noticing the price drop. In this case? No.

Cancel the pre order, then pre order again. Problem solved.

it's an absolutely atrocious policy. yes, you can blame them. most reputable companies would be flexible with things like this. saying, "you can't get a refund on a pre-order" ie. you cannot cancel a pre-order is one thing. putting a price out there for said pre-order for months and then lowering the price before release is another thing. completely different circumstance from cancelling a preorder

I will try this, but the problem is that they have put it under "Purchased" and not "Pre-ordered" for some reason and I know they will weasel out of it. Waiting on chat support right now.

Pretty sure it states clearly that they won't offer refunds.

"CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE EXCEPT WHERE REQUIRED BY LAW."
