Youtube announces support for 60fps videos

So wait, right now the only way to upload 60FPS videos is VP9 WebM? That's horrible since codec is really really slow to encode, it maxes 1.3FPS with "good" settings through mmpeg.

My PC easily plays back 60fps content on MPC-HC but on YouTube it's choppy as heck. Firefox+Flash can't reach 60fps at 1080p and HTML5 can only show 720p30. 1080p60 works on Chrome but rarely reaches 60fps and the playback is amazingly jerky.

Gamersyde has no issues. Smooth 1080p60 HTML5 goodness on Firefox and Chrome.

I used Fraps to check the fps.

Google uses their own codec, Gamesyde is probably H264. H264 decoders are built into every piece of hardware nowadays but VP9 will be using a software decoder. This shouldn't be a problem but it totally is.

Yep Google is trying to force adoption of its own VP9 codec while H.264 and HEVC aka H.265 are perfectly good industry standards that are much more widely adopted.

Finally. I was waiting a long time for this. I'm curious about the compression. It'll probably double.

Nothing is going to beat that direct feed magic on gamersyde anyway, but it's still a very good news.

But Safari in OS X doesn't support VP9.

And no I won't switch to Chrome just for YouTube videos.

Safari is also Mac-only at the moment. You have to dig through the support site to even find links for the old, out of date Windows version.

But the Elgato Capture Card etc. records my PS4 1080p only at 30fps anyway ( ͡°_ʖ ͡°)

Or am I missing something ?

Not read the thread but I wonder if this will be a part of the new premium/subscription YouTube that people have been fussing about? The same service that means music videos have started to be removed the the publisher doesn't sign up to a contract with them?

There's also Firefox. If there are two alternatives and you don't want to switch then the issue is really with you. Gamerside uses H.264 and Google is the spearhead of VP9. So it goes to reason that they would want to promote their technologies.

You could hope that Apple will implement VP9 if it takes off but really, why is it so difficult to use a multiple browsers at the same time?

Should have bought ExtremeCap U3, 60FPS at 1080p. Elgato users lose again, AverMedia reigns supreme.

Sucks that it only works with a very specific kind of USB 3.0 chipset, and has no passthrough.

What you talking about? As long as you have bandwidth you should be OK. I have old 1156 socket MB, first gen Core i7 with 3rd party USB3. Works great as long as I dedicate 4 PCI-E lanes to it.

I just checked out those Titanfall and BF Hardline 60fps videos...

Its 60fps all right, but the quality is terrible.

Little OT but does the ExtremeCap U3 offer multiple codecs to encode at? Hopefully it offers something easy to edit with.

I use the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle TB with ProRes. It doesn't officially use 1080p60 but certain updates included it but since it's not official it sometimes causes issues. Black flickering due to bandwidth apparently. Blackmagic originally advertised it with 1080p60 but soon removed it, 2 years later it still doesn't have support and they rarely say fuck all if it's actually happening.

So I'm pissed at them and had been checking out the ExtremeCap U3.

Great news really, though I hope they do something about the horrible compression as well.
I'm surprised that they didn't opt for this earlier, but better late than never. I'm happy at least.

The Black Magic Intensity Shuttle USB3 has the same limitation. There's only a specific USB3 chipset that will allow it to actually work. Outside of that chipset it's a complete crapshoot if the chipset is compatible.

USB3 is still an immature standard

So can anyone confirm that the only current way to upload 60FPS videos is through VP9 codec? I tried method with mmpeg, but man, is it slow, I get around 1.1FPS rendering with that thing.

Default AverMedia program allows generic H.264 compression with up to 65Mbps bitrate. You can just record RAW or with another codec say in VirtualDub, Adobe Premier, etc. I use Xsplit to record since you can tweak with codec presets. Probably can do same with OBS.

Wait a sec. Does the PS4 itself record 1080p at 60fps? Sharefactory 60fps ?

This has been done mainly for action camera footage like GoPro.

But I guess it could work well for gaming vids too. If you have the ability to capture 60fps.

Maaaan... its funny how this news comes today, when just last week i bought a LGP capture card over another avermedia newer card, one that does 60fps.. thinking YT wouldn't give us 60fps for years to come..

This is great news though. I remember uploading a GT5 Nurburgring x1 lap to YT, and the 30 fps just killed the smoothness of motion completely. 60fps will be real good for fast footage.

Awesome. I hope the bitrate is going to higher too for these videos instead of just letting the image quality suffer severely.

Man this is an important step for the gaming industry, too. Finally the trailers that will be watched by the masses can be displayed in 60fps and more and more people will get to see the difference more closely. I hope that means less devs will target 30fps in the future.

If the bitrate was high, people would complain about how slow videos load. The bitrate they have is perfect for the mass audience that they reach. No internet connection left behind.

Oh, great. Another supposedly awesome youtube video feature (like 1080p) made completely useless by youtube's horrible compression. Even 1080p videos at 24 or 30 fps are useless considering the amount artifacting on them. Now we can see twice the amount of compression blocks at twice the smoothness!

I think they're still aiming for playability, just that you read what they're doing with the graphics and it just sounds outright insane. Less like "ok, this is an essential part of the experience" and more "I want to see just how much crazy stuff we can do with this new hardware, and if it can't be 60 fps ah well."

For reference the open world game's Forza Horizon 2, Driveclub is the second game I referred to and sounds like it's a closed circuit title.

Sounds like bad gamedesign. Anyway, that's not the topic here.

I do hope that 60FPS YT helps however bringing more 60FPS games to the market. Many believe that 30FPS is a desigin decision - I believe (in most cases) it's solely a marketing decision made by marketing people and managers. Now these people have a popular platform to market their games. A gameplay vid of a shotter running with 30FPS will look like shit next to a gameplay video of a shooter running with 60FPS. Finally, more people will see and understand the benefits.

With a bit of luck and VR we can leave the awful territory of shit framerates - finally consoles could become playable again. Can't wait.

oh please, most pc gamers dont even have their games running at 60

I've had 60fps Youtube for ages nerds. Get a decent PC. GDDR5 RAM means nothing when you've got two overclocked titans, bose-einstein condensate liquid cooling and blast processing. Blows those kiddy eggsbockses and playsmations out of the wait what are we talking about here

Thanks to Nvidia's shadowplay I know I do. I'd wager a lot of people do, whether they know they have Shadowplay technology or not. And hell.... even non gamers can take advantage of shadowplay since now it supports desktop recording in general.

To those who don't know it's an ultra lightweight screen/ PC-videogame capture software that records video in the H.264/MP4 format instead of raw that even on modest setups has no actual impact on performance.
