Dragon's Crown |OT| Knock down the crown

Level 20 I think, so I should be OK. As I say, it doesn't seem like it should be that hard (evade facing me back towards her can be a killer though) but I keep failing. I've been spending as much time as possible in the air, but my air combos don't seem to do a great deal of damage (fighter) - certainly not in comparison to my ground based combos.

I've put one point into extending aerial attacks I think, other than that a lot of my points have gone into score/survivability talents.

Will try and have a go at lunch, although I do have a lot of E3 videos to keep up with.

EDIT: Also, by tier 1 do you mean the route A stuff?

Yep, route A. And yeah, the dodge making you face the way you came from is a bitch on medusa :D.

Level 30 now, still in the hunt for talismans. I'm basically getting the score prayer, heading out to the stables and picking my desired location - then chaining locations (choosing the easy option unless it's a boss I haven't defeated yet) until my equipment breaks!

I should probably decently populate multiple bags so I can finish this section off.

Aye, that's the way to go! I never had many usable bags at the lower difficulties, tho.
But with melee classes it's always nice to carry two weapons since they're the first to break.

Mind that your level is capped at 35 on normal - you still get xp, but will only level up on hard. That said, don't try to farm xp on normal to have a "headstart" on Hard - the lower the difficulty, the lower xp per points you earn, so it's not worth it.

Having a bunch of bags is goal #1 for me.

Yeah, I'm pretty much face rolling things now, which is fun for a while but soon gets old. I'll just plough through the talismans and whatever else the story has to offer.

Still not convinced I'll stay as fighter though, but I'm that far in now I might as well see it through.

The face rolling stops once Hard rolls around, and the third difficulty is legitimately difficult. Especially those goddamn assassins...

I was really enjoying this game until I hit the end boss for path A, at which point I almost hurled my vita through a window.

Who on earth thought it a good idea to have a boss completely disable every attack for a class? My wizard appears to be unable to actually *do* anything - 4 lives lost and I can get him to 50% health by sneaking in spells every minute or so when there's a second to spare.

Is there something I'm missing, or is this fight really as stupid as it seems and I have to spend the majority of my time teleporting behind the boss hoping for a split second to actually use an attack? I'm not the worlds greatest player by any means but am finding this boss ridiculously unfun compared to everything else in the game.

You just have to get out of the Gazer's sight to attack. It's frustrating for a magic user, and there aren't really any other bosses quite like it. Are you using allies? They should be distracting the boss so you can circle behind him.

Jump over him. Stay in his face. You have to play dangerous.

I am jumping over and teleporting behind him, but the problem is he actually turns really fast. Not at all what you would expect with that mechanic, but you really do only get a split second and that often isn't enough to get a spell off even if it's just a staff attack.

I'm seeing a lot of people only saying just bring some melee AI companions for that fight as a wizard, which sucks a bit as I had stopped using them after reading this thread... ;-)

I use a lightning staff as my main, so I only need to be behind him for a split second to let a big AoE bolt off. Maybe try that.

I had that problem at first, but I tend to murder Gazers with casters nowadays, even on higher difficulties. The secret is that you can hit him with spells anytime his large eye is closed too, which happens with several of his attacks. Still, jumping or dashing over him, turning and casting is not hard at all.
The one huge advantage casters have is that he's weak to all three elements, so you actually deal huge damage and can knock him out easily for further free damage.

Hey folks. Recently got back into playing this as well as online. I have characters spread out on all difficulties, so hit me up if you wanna party online sometime. I mostly play late at night.

Dwarf - 83s (Infernal, LoC)
Sorc - 47 (Hard)
Fighter - 27 (Normal)

Starting up a Wiz soon too. I also stream on Twitch if you want to to find me there.

I tried this game on vita for the first time the other day. Maybe it's just me but with a full party, things are kind of chaotic on the screen

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
This may be kind of a dumb question, but what kind of graphic technology is this game using? At first I thought it was purely 2D bitmaps and sprites. But it seems there's some 3D effects going on, and also some of the background movements are too smooth to be bitmaps. Are certain parts of the game using cel-shaded polygons? Are the characters sprites or cel shaded?

The artwork is all sprites, but they use almost like a puppet armature to stitch everything together. Here's an interview from around the Muramasa era about their process:

Kind of disappointed in this game. The character art is atrocious (and recycled) and the game is a giant clusterfuck once you get a party of 3+ on the Vita.

Eh, he's not wrong. Much as I love the game, the character design is pretty awful. I only like the elf and the mage, personally, the others look too goofy. The enemy and background art is absolutely amazing, however.

As for the clusterfuck, well, I try not to play with too large parties when I coop (2, 3P top), and I even prefer to play solo so I don't have that problem. :) And I play on PS3 too, couldn't imagine playing that on a tiny handheld, ugh.

About the clusterfuck, it's a matter of getting used to it - I too had this problem when I started playing, but eventually I learned to make quick use of the screen indicators (like the triangle at the bottom) and the distance my character would travel after each move., so i could feel his position (don't ask).

But try to limit your party to 3 character tops at the beginning if you must.

About the art... tastes, aye?

Are you playing with AI players? If so, don't; the game is much more enjoyable without them, for several reasons.

It's better! I found it way more fun to solo.

+1. It's simply so much better. Better balance, better clarity, more focus... AI players play like crap and make enemies have more HP. I finished Infernal with the elf (and unlocked Ultimate afterwards) entirely solo.

I beat it with the Elf last night. Great game. Not sure if I want to go back and do the "extra quest" yet. I'll eventually come back though.

If you beat it on Normal, you barely started playing. On Hard there's additional enemies (elite variants), the bosses use new attacks, etc. But I really enjoyed the game (even more) on Infernal.

I got this on vita with PS+ and damn it's addicting and super fun. I never liked RPGs but this is an exception. Playing as Sorceress at the moment and been doing all the side missions before the dragon fight.

Definitely not the wizard, which is what I went with. Utterly love him and still hugely enjoying the game, but I can see I would have been better off with a meat shield at the start.

One thing I do love is how you grow better at the game as you play. On the previous page I was ranting about Gazer and how unfair he was as a spellcaster, and now he's one of the easiest bosses in the game for my wizard. The Red Dragon, however, continues to wreck my face in no matter what I do. Every fight is just a question of 'have I stored up enough lives?' Because I find dodging his attacks, and the room on fire, to be incredibly difficult.

Wraith and Archdemon are also asses, but not on the level of Red Dragon. He just wrecks my face in...

Though you do have the option to beat the Red Dragon in his horde room, I don't think you get any bonus rewards for doing it.

Fighter's a good one.

There's no bonus reward, but it ensures that you won't run out of time and miss out on the talisman.

Typically lowering the dragon's HP to 2/3 (or 1/2 if you want to be sure) is plenty to kill him off in the corridor. Although I found that the most challenging part of fighting the red dragon in the hoard room is being distracted by paying attention to how much HP he has left and whether it's time to leave or not. :D

He is usually considered the hardest boss fight outside of the post-game boss. The key is, IMO, to stay in his face to encourage his slow and easily dodged bite attack. The stomps will kick your ass every time. Use an ice staff until you outgear him. Fire is a really bad idea. Use the jumping neutral attack when moving around for huge damage.

This fight is much easier for the Sorceress.

Re the red dragon, first time I killed him I didn't even realise you could go to the right. My issue now is he keeps popping up in the labyrinth and there is no right room there - you have to fight him fully in his room.

I've definitely become 'better' at the game since starting - I prefer Ice staffs overall, even though they often roll with +ice damage and I don't think that does anything at all for the wizard. The ice staff whirlwind is terrific at ripping apart bosses though when you stack it on them.

I definitely don't think I use the neutral magic attacks enough, nor the bonus damage from levitating (because it only seems to apply to a couple of attacks which I never normally use). I also still don't understand certain weapon mods or even how much the damage on my weapon actually affects things - does it just affect my staff damage, or does it also increase staff abilities (such as the whirlwind) and player cast spells?

One day I'll even work out what extending means and how to do it but I'm not too hopeful...;-)

Brilliant game and wish there was more of it to play.

If by the former you mean that you rely mostly on Up+Circle attacks, I do so too. It only makes sense, being the most damaging attacks per second; the others are more situational (ranged option for neutral, area for down).

I'm not entirely 100% sure on this, but I think a staff's damage affects its circle attacks (but probably not "book" spells), while elemental damage bonuses affect all attacks from that element, be it circle attacks from a staff with that element or book spells. Don't quote me on this, though; the best way to make sure is to try them on poor old Rannie.

One day I'll even work out what extending means and how to do it but I'm not too hopeful...;-)

Well, by virtue of asking on NeoGAF; today is that day :D. Extending is simply getting an extra life; if I remember correctly, effects that trigger "on extend" do so both when you get one from points, and when you use The Phoenix Incantation.

Brilliant game and wish there was more of it to play.

I was discussing this with a real-life friend, the game would be amazing with more content. I really hope VanillaWare is considering dropping some DLC its way after they're done with Muramasa's.

Dumb question, the framerate on vita can ruin this game?

i'm looking forward to buy this game, but idk which version should i get (ps3 / psv) ?

Metacritic says PS3 version is better. But in Vita you can use features such touch screen. It's one of the differences between the versions. But overall, I don't think there are any hardware limitations that could ruin your experience.

I bought it on PS3 just because local multiplayer with three more friends is fun. :D

The Vita version suffers from slowdown. While nothing game breaking, it can dip into Saturn Guardian Heroes territory when there is a lot going on.

The touch screen feature is cool in theory, but in my experience it's just easier to use the right analog stick. Jabbing at the screen with my sticky mc chicken thumbs while holding the Vita is a bit risky. YMMV.

The Vita Dpad is pretty godlike for movement. Feels great for double taps and diagonals.

Now that crossplay is available it's easy to find games online. Nothing better than propping my feet up in the break room and running through a few sessions.

Get the PS3 version for couch co-op. Get the Vita version if you're on the go. The game plays great in either scenario.

I'm not a big fan of the character design either. Coloring style, absolutely, but the proportions? Ehh...It's even worse with the NPCs.
I'm glad Kamitani has got a few solid successors to his coloring style. Seeing a lot of artwork in the DC Artbook being done by other people and still looking awesome was nice to see.

Hey, lads. I would like to buy Dragon's Crown on the PlayStation 3, what are my best options ? On the PSN it still costs around 60$ so I was thinking about getting a physical copy from amazon, there I can get it for about £24. Any other options ?
