TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

I'm confused here, ND says the game is locked 60 and has very small drops and the people that has the game already are saying it drops constantly?

Drastic improvement in playability and smoothness vs higher resolution shadows..........what a weird option for the developers to include. I mean, could they really do nothing better than better shadows for a 50% decrease in framerate?

This should be a no-brainer if that's all 30fps gets you.

Or maybe some would prefer max quality plus a locked FPS, its simply an option with an added bonus for people with a different preference in how they want to play the game. In the end everyone wins. 60 FPS crowed gets the smoothness and responsiveness, while the 30fps crowed gets a locked framerate with max quality in visuals(no matter how small the increases may be)

Will still play at 60 for sp. Maybe photo mode at 30 cause in that trailer about photo mode they looked blocky when zoomed in. Shadows are the first to be turned down for me in pc games. Rather have this game look crazy smooth at 60 with great visuals.

Where are you reading that? From what I've read, the game is a solid 60 with very few drops.

I didn't see any of that in the thread where people are playing early copies...
On different forums, some people are claiming that but that's why I don't trust it, people don't have a frame counter built in but some are very good catching very little frame drops, my copy is preordered at best buy even tho the local game store in my town already has the game I'll be only 40 at BB with GCU so I'm waiting until next week, long 3 days these will be

It's pretty solid. I haven't noticed any frame drops EXCEPT when during extremely heavy particle effects and lots of movement is happening, which only happened once at
the Bloater fight in the gym, when there were 2 runners and the boater was using is projectile attack and I threw a molotov and nail bomb at the same time

During that part, it dropped to may be 50-55.
As someone who has the game, once you go 60FPS, it is impossible to go back to 30.

Cool I guess. When I'm running a game on PC for the first time I usually put everything on Ultra. Then if things don't work out, the first thing I lower is shadow quality. Ultra shadows to High shadows is usually a decent performance gain.

There is not anything on earth that would make me choose better shadows 30fps over normal shadows 60fps.

Terrible idea, same with the 30 fps option. The thing l like about console games is that l don't have to mess around with settings like this.

Options are always good, the fact you don't like them doesn't mean some people won't find them useful, I think many people here will use that with the screenshots utility, drops to 30 and get better shadow for scrensshots, it'll be glorious!

I dunno. I mean, if I didn't have the option to buy gas from other stations besides BP, I'd be a little annoyed.

Unless they wanted to invest even more money and time then that would be their choice. It's already amazing that they bothered to optimize a 30 and 60fps game like TLoU.
Well obviously they didn't optimize it for 30fps.

I like that they added 'options', but to me, it feels like including 30fps without any significant benefits just lends credence to the notion that 30fps isn't objectively inferior to 60fps and the whole 'cinematic gaming' bullshit. If it weren't for Uncharted 4, I'd argue that Naughty Dog were 'lending credence' on purpose so they can go back to doing 30fps games without complaint, but since that's not the case, this just seems weird to me.

So many people in the Destiny thread are complaining that Bungie isn't taking full advantage of the PS4 hardware and I could definitely argue that anybody who chooses 30fps in TLOU is going to play a game that isn't taking full advantage of the hardware, either.

I suppose its possible that the game is 60fps in the same way that Tomb Raider is 60fps - which is to say - more like 50fps on average. Which would make this more explainable.

Well... its time for another comparison.

Today i got the retail version of last of us remastered.
Its captured in 1080p 60fps but i don't think 60fps is already enabled on youtube. (or its still encoding)
Gamersyde upload is in the works:

Pushing for 60 FPS is stupid anyway. Devs should be giving us the best graphics at a solid 30 FPS.
Devs should be making their consumer base happy. Unless ND's demographic consists of 1.5 million clones of you, well, I'd stop telling the devs what to do.

This seems like a reasonable trade-off. Props to Naughty Dog for giving the option on a console.

I think it's rad that we're getting a choice. As long as they're promising consistent 30 fps, I'll probably play it that way. Even though I prefer 60 fps for most games.

Trust me. Going from 60FPS to 30FPS in a click of a button and you WILL prefer 60fps.

I like 60fps on my shooters. I don't deny that it is better. What I don't get is that people pretend its some completely free thing that doesn't involve any tradeoffs (on a console ... no $2000 pc wanking). It always involves a tradeoff in the ultimate fidelity of the game. In this case it was shadows, but it could end up being AA, textures, lighting, particles, filtering and even (god forbid) resolution. I accept that console games need to guarantee 30fps. Beyond that everything else is a tradeoff that is worth it for twitch shooters and sim racers but completely wasteful in my opinion for anything else.

"We only included it for 30fps purists and added it because it was easy"

I'm paraphrasing but that's the jist, no mention of shadow differences.

I'm still buying the game.

Sounds reasonable to me. Lots of people in general have being asking why they can't have the option of lowered visuals for 60fps.

Hence why we need more games with this option like TLOU: 30 fps with the full effects for people who want it, 60 fps for people who prefer a higher framerate.

Everybody wins.

You have to imagine that the 60 shadows --> 30 shadows is a marginal increase compared to 30 frames ---> 60 frames. If the entire game looks noticeably way better this might be a bit more remarkable.

Why settle for 30? Let's go back to 15, like the late 90s.

Cinematic story focused SP games are where I absolutely want devs to push graphics to their limits. When people show the UC teaser and say 'look at how amazing 60fps can look all hail naughty gods" the only thing I can think is how amazing it would look if they had twice as long to draw each frame.
