The first two images I posted were from '75 and '77, respectively. Also, they didn't have giant robots. That was introduced with Battle Fever J in '79.

Blew my mind when I learned that Japanese Spider-Man's Leopardon actually outdated any Sentai giant robots.

Also, totally thought this thread was going to be about the first Sentai series, but I guess this works too?

Yeah, check some of these older series out:

Man, those costumes look like hot garbage compared to this:

I hated it as a kid when they started changing the Rangers' costumes, because while the original MMPR costumes were goofy as fuck, they at least had this clean iconic look to them. Looking at them didn't immediately make me think "This obviously comes from another country" like the later costumes did.

iirc Battle Fever J was supposed to be a Captain America show.

and yeah, Ms. America is funny as hell

GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE
NO WAY

EDIT: I can't believe it. I swear, Discotek changed the world. First their Samurai Pizza Cats, then their Cybersix, now Shout Factory is jumping in with Zyuranger... Shit that I like is finally being sold to me. I am living in the twilight zone

Funny enough, I just searched for the op for Zyuranger and ended up finding the last episode (didn't know it was, I just saw the episode title, "Long live the dinosaurs" and clicked on it)

I enjoyed it, poked holes in it yeah (ie (spoilers of course)
Giving the children the dinosaurs to look after
) but it still had its charms imo.

Wouldn't mind importing this if it doesn't come to the UK, also hope they bring over Jetman, those costumes look cool. I guess any other series will depend on Zyurangers sales.

Also <3 Mei

For any Sentai casuals curious about Zyuranger, it's largely mediocre. Jetman and Dairanger (which sandwich Zyuranger, coming out the year before and year after respectively) are easily the best 90s Sentai, and some of the greatest toku of all time.

Zyuranger's lows are coma-inducingly terrible, while its highs hit so high that certain plot points quickly became staples of the franchise.

Regardless of how 'mediocre' it is, I am hoping it does well, They might give Jetman a chance then or the one the Alien Rangers were based on (since they were only in it for a very short time during MMPRs run which is why I want to see that series as well)

Well this is an interesting move and I'll probably pick it up.

If they did bring over more series it would probably be the ones that have been adapted into a Power Rangers seasons. I think Megaranger(which was adapted into In Space) would be a likely candidate and Gokaiger would probably bring in the money lol.

Possibly but they might consider bringing over more sentai stuff in general and are just using this one because it's what the most popular MMPR series was 'based' on.

Still, if this does well, they have no shortage of sentai stuff to pick up.

Also I'd like Gokaiger as well lol.

Since we're talking about Sentai series, here's a funny clip from Boukenger (power rangers operation overdrive according to wikipedia):

Im surprised they don't just film both series together, I mean US version is made in NZ for last 10 years, like a 600buck flight between Japan and NZ.

is the original Japanese version any good anyway?

I have not seen it myself, but general consensus seems to be that Zyuranger is pretty bad.

They did that for a while, but only for select episodes/scenes. Saban is now so behind though I don't think they have the opportunity to.

Sentai is hit and miss. Some seasons are amazing (Jetman, Dairanger, Timeranger, Shinkenger, Gokaiger) while others aren't really worth the effort digging up. Each year is self-contained, so it really comes down to each individual season. The franchise is (now, anyways) one big toy commercial, and it runs every week for a full year. That formula makes it pretty difficult to come up with something undoubtedly good, but when it happens... Oh, it is the perfect kind of cool. For small children.

I should also add that Zyuranger was picked for two reasons: The first is nostalgia, obviously, but the second is the pricetag. Modern Sentai/Rider is full of mactors with airtight contracts and music promotion tie-ins... It's a big, expensive mess of red tape that there really isn't enough profit in to bother with. If this sells well enough, who knows... Don't hold your breath for Gokaiger, though.

It's always been a big toy commercial

It's always had merchandise, but it wasn't until around Goggle-V/Dynaman that it really ramped up, then again for Gaoranger. Timeranger and Go-busters* are also both notable for having a fairly small toy range (and I think the latter's failure ensured that won't happen again for a long time).

* When compared to other Sentai of the same decade. Go-busters still had a shitload of toys

Depends on the season, Zyuranger is not that great because of kid of the week syndrome but it has good parts, its green ranger story kicks the shit out of the US version and the villains were pretty good.
Other seasons are fantastic and some a drag to get through but that's what makes the franchise great, you never know what to expect (except for colored suits, giant robots and stock plots like the wedding and the body switch), it can be comedic or serious, some seasons are very episodic, others have more serialized elements. If you don't like the current season, there's a good chance you'll like the next.

Anyone who watched PR Dino Thunder remember the episode where they watched a cut down dubbed version of the Japanese version of the show?

My first real experience at seeing the Japanese version of a PR series.

I used to have a set of DVDs that was nothing but the opening and ending credits from a bunch of shows like this, starting in like 1960 and going til like 96 or so? I gave it to a friend and haven't been able to find another copy since. Super hero teams, single heros, lots of Kamen Rider and stuff like Kaiketsu Zubat. Good times.

I find Boukenger really boring.

The two series are too different to be filmed together, and the Japanese version is pretty much always better IMO.

Zubat is fucking amazing. Same cat played Big One in JAKQ. And if memory serves Battle Fever J was a sentai series Co created by Marvel. It featured Miss America(the picture some of you posted)

Screw Dairanger and Zyuranger, Mahou Sentai Magiranger was f'n terrific. The only sentai that kept my attention to where I could watch it from beginning to end.

Confession: I actually have a MagiShine morpher toy. I'm 27 this year.

In my defense, I totally have a ladyboner for Hikaru.

Just so you know, this is literally nostalgia talking.

Most of the time, the Japanese version is significantly better, both in production values and writing; but Zyuranger is a weak season overall. It has great moments, but a lot of boring stuff as well.

So wait, the japanese studio held a vote for kids to decide if the green ranger survived, they chose he did, studio killed him off anyways?

They did it with the black ranger from the previous season as well. Many 90's teenage fangirl tears were shed.
