3DS Game Recommendations/Condemnations | Thread 2 | Two screens, three dimensions!

Bravely Default and Kid Icarus Uprising.

I've had Bravely Default on my wishlist for quite some time. I may finally pull the trigger on that one! I have been interested in Kid Icarus Uprising, but I've heard that the controls are hit-and-miss depending on the player. That kind of deters me from spending $40 without being able to try it first. Have you played Star Fox 64 3D? (Good suggestions, though. Thank you!)

The games I am sort of interested in adding are Crimson Shroud and Virtue's Last Reward. Would you recommend these?

Crimson Shroud is the best of the Guild0x games and a fine entry to Matsuno's body of work. It's a lovingly-executed simulation of a tabletop gaming session, with a combat system that pays homage to D&D while still feeling unique. Great Sakimoto soundtrack, cool story, with a New Game Plus path that doubles the length of the game and opens up a true ending. If you like any of Matsuno's previous games I would recommend this.

Virtue's Last Reward is pretty good. If you've played and enjoyed 999 I would recommend it without hesitation; if you haven't I would suggest picking up a copy of that first instead. Do note that the 3DS version has some pretty severe, potentially save-ruining bugs so the Vita version is a better choice if you have access to it, but the 3DS version is otherwise fine given some care.

Thank you for the detailed response. I really appreciate it.

I have to admit that you've completely sold me on Crimson Shroud. It sounds fantastic and for the low price of $7.99, I think it would be foolish to pass up such a unique experience. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed some classic tabletop action!

As for Virtue's Last Reward, I've done a lot of reading and it interests the absolute hell out of me. I have not yet played 999 and would prefer to begin with that, but without it being on the 3DS eShop, I don't believe I'll have the opportunity to do so, unfortunately. I had not heard about the bugs in VLR that you mention, though. Admittedly, something like that makes me hesitate from making the jump immediately. Perhaps I'll hold off on that for now.

Again, thanks so much for the information. I'll be downloading Crimson Shroud without hesitation. Cheers!

Probably for the best, though if you get a chance to play 999 (and it's a DS game, so it should be region-free on your 3DS regardless of where you get it) I would definitely follow up with VLR immediately. Resist the temptation to play VLR first; 999's a little bit better overall and a lot of its impact would be dulled by knowing what happens going in.

buy it and resell it if controls aren't for you. At worst you'll lose $10. At best, you'll play the best handheld game ever made

I never had any issues with the controls, and I played it on a OG 3DS without the stand. Sure, they take some time to get used to but once they click, they're perfect

Tossing up between Ocarina of Time and Mario Tennis to get my last 40 Coins for gold status. Any opinions on the latter? Only thing stopping me from OoT is the that I've never finished a Zelda game because they've never clicked with me.

I will definitely make a point of playing 999 first. With any luck, I won't run into any game-breaking bugs once I hit VLR, either. Thanks a lot for the advice. You've been a great help!

I would like to be able to re-sell the game if it didn't work out, but I'm going all-digital with my 3DS titles. It's a pretty steep price for a risk, but from what I've read, if the controls clicked with me, it would be well worth it.

Any opinions on inazuma eleven 3ds? I never played any title in this series before. I have a little soccer itch due to the wolrd cup so I was wondering if this was worth the ten bucks.

To quote my response from another thread:

I played the original DS version, and absolutely loved it. It's a great Level-5 game through and through. The battles take some getting used to, though. It's quirky in its gameplay.

I've been thinking about getting Bravely Default but I've heard some bad things about the second half of the game. Is it worth getting or is this second half a deal breaker?

It was for me...I went in thinking I could handle it but after 50 hours of gameplay up to that point, I was pretty burnt out and I'm an old fart so my time matters. I have too much else to play to put up with that kind of stuff in a game so I moved on. What I did play however I really enjoyed, I just don't have the urge to play something that long and grueling these days unless it can keep my focus and attention. hehe

Do it!
You won't be disappointed, as well as being perhaps the best game in the Kirby series it also has the most impressive 3D effect on the system....imo.
I loved it.

I might have to check Triple Deluxe out then. My only hesitation is that I haven't played a Kirby game before. The gameplay footage looks super charming though.

I really should pick up a platformer for the 3DS. If you had to choose between 3D Land or Kirby, which would you go for?

Is Outrun 3D still coming to North America on the E-Shop? It's out in Japan, I believe..but I haven't heard any news of it for stateside.

Depends what you're looking for. Neither is uber-hand, although both get much harder as they go on. If you already know you love Mario 3D platformers, go for what you know you like and play the (awesome and delightful) Kirby later. It also depends on if you feel like a 2D or 3D platformer, as they play very differently.

Thanks for the advice. Mario it is, but I'll keep an eye out for Kirby.

Kid icarus is kicking my ass. Playing through for the first time cause it was a club Nintendo reward.

Beat first three levels. Now I'm in a bunch of weird metric like rooms. Says there's a boss health meter but I haven't found it yet. Game is hard. I keep dying and can't afford to buy stuff yet.

Also, bought Donkey Kong for the GB. So fun, can't believe the arcade really expanded well.

Ooh, DK '94! Yeah, I'm playing it for the first time. It's AMAZING. Just wait till you get further into it!

Yeah I worry I'd get burnt out too but it looks so good to me. I think I'll just go ahead and buy it.

Taking a quick look at the GameFAQs games list, this is a blind spot in the 3DS library. The only ones available are more arcadey racers like NFS The Run and Ridge Racer.

Similarly, I can't believe there is not one good American football game on the system, or any other deep sports game for that matter, save for the PES series for soccer.

Edit: oops, meant to edit my post, not quote myself.

Is there a good sim style racing game on 3DS?

There isn't a good racing game on 3DS period, if we take out MK7.

You have to get a copy of TOCA 2/3 or GT on PSP

Uh, seems like I've never posted here. My recommendations:

Get:
Pullblox
Mario Kart 7
Layton vs Phoenix Wright (eu only for now)
Pilotwings Resort
Castlevania Mirror of Fate
New Super Mario Bros 2
Kid Icarus Uprising

Get only if dirty cheap
Epic Mickey Power of Illusion
Sonic Generations

Don't get
Lego City Undercover spin off (and I won't suggest any of the other Lego games on 3DS/Vita)
Yoshi's New Island

Just bought me a black 3DS XL with Bravely Default! I hole it's a fun game. A few questions...

I plan to go fully digital. Any body else doing this? Bravely Default took the entire card included so I have to wait to buy more games until my 32 GB comes from Amazon. As far as I know, that's the biggest size available.

I plan on picking up A Link Between Worlds as my next game but a few other games I'm not so sure on.

Is Super Mario 3D Land better than New Super Mario Bros 2?

Is the Animal Crossing the best in the series, or where does it rank?

What other good JRPGs exist?

Is Luigi's Mansion 2 good?

How do the Pokemon games this Gen stack up? I've never played one but have some interest in them.

SD cards go up to 256GB, I think. I have a 64GB one.

SM3DL is better. NSMB2 is all about coins.

ACNL is amazing and I like it the best.

Rune Factory 4 comes to mind, and if you like dungeon crawlers, the Etrian Odyssey series. There's also Fire Emblem: Awakening, which is a great SRPG.

Yes, Luigi's Mansion 2 is good.

BorkBork

The Legend of BorkBork: BorkBorkity Borking
Ghost Recon Shadow Wars is pretty sweet. Really glad I picked it up for 8 bucks. Poured like 10 hours into it and I'm still less than 20% in, crazy!
