2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Anybody here have a Lenovo Y50 with an IPS screen replacement and something like a MX100 256GB SSD? I'm thinking about going this route for a gaming/Photoshop laptop for $1200.

SSD seems really important for laptop and I couldn't find any laptops with y50 specs and at least 256GB SSD. If I missed such a laptop let me know please.

You can usually get something with a HDD and just replace it with an SSD, it doesn't need to come with an SSD.

Alright guys. I have a loaded credit card in hand and will use it. Country where it will be purchased: US

Im in between a ASUS X550LN-DB71, Lenovo Y40, ASUS Q550LF and whatever you guys recommend me.

My budget is $1000 max (would go over for a Clevo unless theres something better for less). Dont care about looks. Dont care about SSD as I could upgrade it later on. Xbone-like graphics OK as long as I could have a steady framerate.

I will use it for gaming but 1080p is not crucial. Size is not crucial either
I will also use it for college, so it has to be fast aka not hang between applications (I say it because I had a $600 Lenovo that hanged a lot between Micro_Office Applications. Crazy, I know.).

Im leaning towards the X550LN-DB71 tbh. Its inexpensive and based on some comments here, It looks like its good for gaming. But I wouldn't be posting here if I wasn't open for suggestions.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I just read about Clevo and since I could purchase it in the US, im willing to get one of those. Just dont know which one lol.

Sager NP7358. Or the NP7378 if you want a 17" screen.

Anyone have the MSI GS70 Stealth Pro? I am looking to get a laptop that I can use to game on while having a modest look when I have it out on business and the slim design of the laptop is really appealing. My only concerns are the noise and temps. Some have said the noise from the fans when idling is silent while others say it is not. I don't want to be having a conversation over whirling fans. I also saw that it gets really hot.

I looked at the Razer but it is so expensive for what you are really getting and the Aorus X7 v2 which seems not to be out yet for any real user reviews.

Mirror's Edge ran at 720p30 on Intel HD Graphics (the original card, came out in 2010).
Skyrim ran at 900p30 on Intel HD 4000.
Bioshock: Infinite ran at 720p30 on Intel HD 4000.
So the laptop has arrived, and I have been able to play through the tutorial of Mirrors Edge.
One problem I have is that I can't get the game to run at 1280x720. At 1366x768, performance is "alright"- 24-30fps. At 1024x768, the performance improves drastically with mostly all frames at 30+. I assume 720p would be the perfect compromise of looks and performance, but I can't select that resolution in the options screen.

EDIT: I figured out how to do it.

Man, it's been three weeks without a laptop. I ordered a MsI GT60 from Xoticpc. Bad idea. I should've just bought one on Amazon. Now I have to wait like they're building a Dell, HP or Alienware, lol.

I can only point you to the GS70 SP thread on NBR.

That's the exact reason I went with Amazon. My laptop hinges had broken and my Prime account got the thing to me in a single day. I just had to do my own SSD upgrade.

I know but I'm kind of surprised there aren't more laptops in that price range with SSDs.

I should have the laptop, SSD, and screen replacement by Monday so I know how well things turn out then. Only known downside not rectified is the 2GB Kepler 860M gpu, but I feel like I will be fine.

Any of you guys stream from your laptop? I tried using OBS but there is a noticeable stutter in game. Laptop is the Asus g750 with 860m

EDIT: Just tried shadowplay and it works pretty amazingly. Don't even see an impact

Hindsight is 20/20. I did manage to get the intel 802.11AC card and Blu-Ray player in it for the same price as a normal GT60.

Going to purchase a 840 SSD and 32GB of RAM. I'm an IT Tech so I like to play with virtualization.

Shadowplay is indeed pretty incredible. While I don't stream, I may someday, and SP has guaranteed that I stick with Nvidia.

Would anyone who owns a Sager NP7358 be willing to post a high resolution close-up photo of the laptop's keyboard? I'm choosing between that and the NP7338 and while I think that I'd prefer the NP7358's keyboard (because the keys appear to be closer together and it has a number pad) I can't really judge it from the photos I've found.

The other factor is the screen size, of course, which I'm still torn on, but the keyboard might ultimately be what pushes me toward the NP7358. I mostly intend to use the laptop for mobile video editing in Premiere so I'm thinking that I'll appreciate the extra inches instead of extra mobility, but if anyone has any opinions on 13.3" vs 15.6" I'd like to hear them.

Actually I can confirm it's a GM107, Maxwell GPU in these Lenovo Y50s.

ok Now i have to decide between

Hp Envy 15 k003Nx (no reviews online) with 8gb ddr3 and 4gb GTX850m ddr3 - $1200
Assus n550 with 16gb ddr3 and 4gb GTX850 ddr3 - $ 1333
and
MSI GE60 with 12gb ddr3 128gb ssd and 2GBGTX850 gddr5 - $1500

Which is best bang for buck

Also there is MSI gs70 with 2GB GTX 860 but costs $ 1740

Well...today the most bizzare thing happened. On a whim, I thought I would check my laptop and see if I could turn it on, because of a fool's hope. Turns out the laptop started to work, and now I'll have to cancel my request to return the laptop for repair. I do wonder what it was that caused it to shut down in the first place.

I'm looking at getting a gaming laptop so I can do some Gamedev while I'm out and about. My game is pretty beefy on the CPU atm so definitely looking at i7's but wanting to spend less than a grand for sure.

I'm eyeing this: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7378-clevo-w370ss-p-6990.html?wconfigure=yes

But I'm concerned about the build quality. Having read the OP, does anyone have any experience with defects on this brand? Things like the monitor hinge breaking, defective hardware after X amount of time, etc. I used to have a Lenovo back in the day and the hinge on the monitor broke and now it remains a stationary Netflix machine :p

Another question is: Have you folks noticed if the gaming laptops get any cheaper on Black Friday/Holidays? I know the budget crap laptops get discounted heavily, but I haven't noticed if the higher end models see any sort of reduction during that time period.

Summary:

Primary goal: Gamedev on the go. Would like at least 3 - 5 hrs battery life, the more the better.

Min Specs: i7, decent GFX, 8 or 16GB ram preferred
Budget : 1k or less.

There are no $1k laptops with a two year global warranty. The cheapest options w/ globall warranty are the MSI GE60 (1 year global), and the Asus G750 (1 year global).

There's literally nothing at $750, so this is a good deal at $799.

I wouldn't be worried about any hardware defects. Clevo makes very solid laptops.

There are never sales on gaming laptops.

Looking for a decent mid-range laptop for my gf; she likes to play some games (medium settings are fine), mobility is very important, that it's fast and that it has a good battery life.

I was looking at this one: http://www.alternate.be/MSI/GP60-2PE-069BE-Notebook/html/product/1144139?tk=5633

In short:

Intel® Core™ i5-4200H @ 2800MHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 840M
2x4Gig Ram
15.6 inch (1920x1080)
128 GB SSD
1TB HDD
DVD-RW
2.4kg

€900

Anyone have any (counter-) advice on the subject?

Depends on a few things?

1. Is €900 the top of your budget?
2. Is ordering from a German site an option?
3. Do you have a copy of Windows laying around?

Does anyone on GAF have the latest iteration of the Razer Blade? It's one of the laptops I'm currently looking into and wanted to do some research before buying it.

So,
  • How has your overall experience been?
  • Does the laptop have any stability issues?
  • I've read that it heats up a lot. Is that disconcerting?
  • Hows the build quality of the laptop?
  • Any quirks potential buyers should be aware of?

Thank you in advance for you replies.

1. She doesn't need an expensive laptop, but would rather pay a bit more for something that lasts longer than something that's cheap and won't work after 3 years.
2. It is, if the shipping costs don't screw us over. (Also a little bit more worried about warranty service.)
3. Yeah I have a copy.

So is it worth more $200 extra dollar. and will it last me this gen ?

Will it last the whole gen? I dunno, probably. The only card I'd 100% expect to do that would be today's highest end of mobile GPUs, or the upcoming GPUs which are coming from the desktop 800 series.

The 14 inch? The only issue I know of is that because of the 870M, it gets really toasty. You'll find tons of impression HERE.

What is gafs take on the machine? Anyone have one?

Thanks for the hint! I looked at those ones earlier actually and the only thing that worries me a bit, is that's it not an actual brand.
Not that it has to be a heavy marketed brand, but just something that I can trust (and still works in 3 years). Or do you know if it's really reliable?

Edit: also the SSD in the other laptop was a big plus. And since she's used to a macbook, the speed is pretty crucial.

It's about the best you'll do, GPU wise, for $750. That's a decent deal.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's just a rebranded Clevo, which are machines you don't have to worry about breaking down easily.

As far as the SSD, yeah that's a loss, but when the purpose of this thread is really to get people the most GPU power for their money, and the 860M is 2x the speed of the 840M, the latter being a lower-end 64-bit DDR3 card.

I always lean toward getting the best GPU now, because those are hard/impossible to replace, and upgrading the easy DIY things like RAM and SSD down the road. If you're left disappointed by a GPU, the only option is to buy another laptop; versus the price of an SSD that's not a good position.

Hey Gaf, I'm looking for a new laptop mainly for school. I don't know much about specs and stuff, all I know is I'd like something that will last me a while and preferably something sleek and good looking. I probably won't be doing any gaming on it but I do download a lot of music and movies if that matters. Price range is $800-$1,000. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated, thanks!

So I just found out (hadn't even thought to check when I got it, I just assumed everything did by now) that my laptop doesn't have a gigabit ethernet port in it, it's just a 100Mb one.
And, of course, the internal wireless card is just a Wireless-N.

The laptop is the "Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition"/i17RSE-3589BK

What are my options - aside from an external USB adapter - as far as upgrading either the wireless card (to AC), the network card, or both?

And, it's just really silly that a laptop released in 2013 (or 2012, whenever it was anyway) wouldn't allow for connection speeds above 100Mb.
Thought something was wrong with my 150Mb connection, but nope, just my laptop.

Hey all. The Clevo P150 I picked up three (!) years ago thanks to K.Jack and these threads has finally hit a wall. I'm 99% sure the GPU (6970M) is gone. With Catalyst uninstalled it runs at reduced res using the default Windows driver, but as soon as the AMD driver is installed it black screens. There was a lot of visual glitching leading up to this - all the bad signs. Thinking it may just be a driver issue, and wanting to upgrade Windows anyway, I did a fresh Win8 install. But the problem remains.

The biggest bummer is that the onboard graphics (HD3000) aren't even connected in this line of models. If they were, I'd be happy to leave it in service as a general use laptop. But it needs a new 6970M, which means I'm looking at a few hundred bucks to fix it - a few hundred bucks for a second hand, three year old GPU. Not attractive really.

I'm going to email the builder (LBO) and see what they can do. Otherwise, it's game over :( I don't suppose anyone has a 6970M board kicking around in their bottom drawer?

Hmm...100 Mb Ethernet card. That kind of sucks depending on the type of traffic and file transfers on your home network. However, your wired speeds will probably be better than your wireless.

I get my MSI GT60 on Monday. Bought 32 GB of RAM and an Evo 840 SSD to throw in there. I'm pretty excited (except for the size and possible heat). I saw the GS60 at Tiger Direct. They looked decent. Very light. Just not a fan of not having optical (though one can get a DVD or Bluray for $20-$100).

Well, wireless I get around 70Mb, and wired (with a Cat6) I get around 80Mb.
Still well short of the 150Mb I'm paying for.

Seriously? That is pretty darn shocking. I haven't seen a non-gigabyte ethernet port in years. Heck my 3+ year old Clevo had it. The good news is that replacing the wireless card couldn't be any more simple.

That suck. We bought our Clevos that same year. For fear of my 6970M dying, I decommissioned the laptop as a gaming device.

I'd get you my functioning 6970M in an instant, if I hadn't sold the machine to my father, to use as a backup server. I see 6970Ms on eBay as low as $70 USD.

Yeah, I was pretty darn shocked. I hadn't even thought to check that when getting the laptop. And it's not like it was some cheap budget laptop or anything. It's like, if you're putting a dedicated graphics card into a laptop, why would you cheap out with little things like that?

What part/part name should I be searching for when searching for the appropriate wireless card (the ethernet port isn't that big a deal, was just using that to test to connection)?

Appreciate the 'if-only' offer - thanks all the same.

Sadly there's nothing available to Aussie ebayers under $200. I've emailed LBO and we'll see what pans out! I think I've talked myself into spending a little on it, rather than a lot on a new one. I might even end up with a 7970M.

Hi PC GAF, I need a fast new laptop because my old HP is in a very bad shape. I have my eyes on the Acer Aspire V5-573G. It costs 775 euro at a shop here in the Netherlands. Screen quality is very important to me and this one has a 15.6" IPS 1920x1080 display which is very nice.

The specs of this laptop.

- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850m 4096 MB

Well, wireless I get around 70Mb, and wired (with a Cat6) I get around 80Mb.
Still well short of the 150Mb I'm paying for.
