how do you guys play with Ludger? I don't swap weapons too much and I'm using dual blades more than anything else.

I love how the NPC that handles the quest board is almost always invisible when I first run to him.
lol yes, and not just him.

-
how did they manage to even put worse sidequests than the first game? I finish some random and useless "kill monster X 3 times" quest and right after I report it I get "kill the same fucking monster 5 times". why do I even bother doing this crap, not anymore

the debt lady calling me everytime I get some gald. seriously? How did they not think "this shit is annoying as hell let's change it", just tell me how. I don't care about giving her money, you get a lot of it anyway, but jesus christ stop calling me.

I hope too see some good plot stuff soon (chapter 6) because this is getting boring and annoying pretty quickly.

I tend to switch between dual blades and hammer a lot, but not with guns since I can't find a good way to flow in to/out of gun combos (besides rudimentary Zero Divide to pull and then switch to another weapon). I also switch to try and hit on weaknesses but I usually don't bother unless either dual blades or hammer is resisted.

Dual blades is usually used for aerial attacks, knock them up with L1 + Circle or use a launcher arte. Then I'll either smack them a couple of times with attacks or artes or switch to my hammer and knock them back down, ground them and use those artes that crit on downed enemies.

I actually use hammer a lot, mostly for jump -> attack to down enemies as an initiator, as well as to recover with that Guardian Field copy. It's also great for staggering enemy casting, especially for bosses which I find dual blades doesn't do a very good job of.

I mostly use guns for TP generation or just clearing waves of enemies with Arc Fire.

I have about 6-8 artes mapped to each combat style so it can get a bit dizzying, and I know just got the Artes Ball so that's gonna go even higher

I only played it on normal but I stuck to duel blades 99% of the time. Hammer and guns just felt weird and the game never really needed you to use them anyways.

I dunno, Ludger + Alvin link with guns can cause some serious destruction very very fast from my experience

And in general, it seems a lot of areas have weakness "themes" so Ive just been following that in terms of what weapon to use.

What I haven't been doing enough of is switching around to do cool combos however...

Sledgehammer and Dual Pistol become more viable later on when you get weapon specific skills for them.

So I just finished Chapter 12.

Where to start, first of all I saw the connection between Ludger and Victor since the beginning cutscene. I thought that they looked too similar for there to be none (same hairstyle, appearance, dual blade combat style). It was essentially confirmed when you first meet him and can see his eye clearly since it looks exactly like Ludger's. Elle being the future/fractured version of an Elle yet to be in the prime dimension complicates things. If Ludger has a child of his own then Elle will disappear since the two of them cannot co-exist in the prime dimension.

There's also the issue of Elle's power of Kresnik. Since Ludger's been using Elle's power she's the one who is undergoing the transformation into a divergence catalyst. If I recall correctly it was revealed that Julius was doing the same thing to Ludger in the second Kinship sidequest. This means going forward that Ludger has to use his own power to activate the chromatus (I can't remember if they said he's incapable of using his own power to activate the chromatus or not).

Another thing I noticed is that that I think they potentially foreshadowed the Bad Ending before the fight with Victor. From my understanding the other party members tried to stop Victor from killing Bisley Bakur and died in the process. He doesn't reveal why he wanted to kill Bisley however. I suppose that's something I'll find out in the next chapter since it's been mentioned here before that the Bad Ending can be reached in that chapter.

Overall this was a very good chapter. The entire sequence leading up to Victor was excellent in building up some dread due to the mentioned murders. The reveals and the resulting battle with Victor provided a lot of things to think on. I'm not really sure where the story is going to go next here, since the only thing I predicted from the beginning has come to pass. Suffice to say it's a lot more gripping than Xillia 1's story.

I guess I never needed to exploit bosses weakness so far so I managed with just dual blades.

I've unlocked the skill that changes your weapons automatically with L1 + X and it's pretty cool but not as effective as the usual dual blades + artes combo.

I dunno, Ludger + Alvin link with guns can cause some serious destruction very very fast from my experience
how so? You mean you can use good linked artes with that? So far I only have one for Ludger + Alvin so he isn't really useful especially when I go OVL.

Yeah, their linked artes get really good with the gun and cover a lot of ground.

I still think it's kinda awkward to use. Ludger moves so slow with them, and it seems like a lot of the normal attacks just go right over small enemies heads. So weirdly enough I find them best up close when you can pop them in the air and keep shooting them.

More I play, more I feel like the game is a cash-in to use the ideas they didn't get to insert in Xillia 1 because it was rushed.

Riexe Maxia is so baaadly shoved in, the place are mostly the same and there aren't really many changes.

how do you guys play with Ludger? I don't swap weapons too much and I'm using dual blades more than anything else.

Ludger + Muzet for me.

I really like guns, not a fan of swords in general (In ToS/Grace Collette and Hubert were my mains because of the more distinctive move-set)

I'm on chapter 5 and I don't think I've done any character quests. How many have I missed?

Pink exclamation marks will show up on the world map when they are available. Just keep an eye out for them after Ch5.

So I beat Ch15 and I kinda get why Ludger is not voiced now...
Makes the cutscenes where his fractured versions are voiced have much more impact, and disguises Victor being him as well. I just wish they were more consistent with keeping him unvoiced until then. Having him say "Yeahs" and such in skits is kind of silly.

So I just finished Chapter 12.

*SPOILER IMPRESSIONS*

Nice you got to it. So you enjoyed what you saw, did it live up to what we were talking about? :p Things just took a complete 180 on that chapter.

I'm now on chapter 14, game will be over soon. I'm going to miss these characters. I'm just praying for a nice finalization to the Xilia series. After playing this, I'm now actually kind of looking forward to playing another Tales game, and Hearts R, is the next one to come over, before Zestiria which will only be out sometime in 2015. I'm very much looking forward to those 2 games now, specially the latter.

Am I the only one who think that the game Audio is very low!?

I had to raise the Audio in my TV to maximums :\

Idk, I don't think so, but that's just me. And since you brought it up, a notable mention goes to the voice acting in this game (so glad that Milla's lisp is gone). The voices are great, but I guess that has also to do with the script.

Just beat the game. Absolutely fantastic, much better than Xillia. This game is one of the few Tales games were I actually liked the story, it wasn't bad at all. Really looking forward to the new Tales games now.

I like how New Game + shows you which dialogue options you've already picked.

Yeah the voices aren't bad, and they improved the audio quality a ton compared to Xillia. Milla's lisp was in fact mostly due to poor engineering.

EDIT:

It's fine for me, actually. You know, there are in-game settings to change the volume for the voices, sound effects and music. You might want to give that a try too.

Yup the quality was bad in Xillia 1. I remember not being able to play with headphones, because of how jarring it sounded. You had nice, 320kbps sound in the background, music included, and the character dialog was all like, sub 180kbps with a ton of compression in there. Idk what happened lol.

Audio level is fine for me. I've got it set to surround and it's going through my astro mixamp though.

Yeah. When I first got Xillia I was only using the TV speakers and it didn't sound that bad. However, when I started using my headphones, it really highlighted how terrible quality the audio was.

It's the usual major console Tales game one year after update Bandai Namco has been doing with all games after Abyss (Destiny R -> Director's Cut, Vesperia Xbox -> PS3, Graces -> f).

Honestly after the reveal disappointment that this wasn't to be a totally new game by another team it was actually a pleasant surprise what they did with the one year development circle this time around (the more so it was during several reorganizations). It's an experimental entry they probably would never have tried as a stand alone, and aside the mute MC failure (honestly thought they'd activate the voiced choices from the get go in the localization) it's a solid improvement over the game it's based on.

Just noticed a little detail as I booted the game up. End of Chapter 13 spoilers:
after Elle leaves the party, if you go to the game's main menu you won't see her there. It's just Ludger and Rollo.

Are the character stories linked to affinity or will they pop up regardless after certain chapters?

This happens even when she is just briefly gone like when you first leave the dimension with Milla after just meeting her and they run ahead). It's neat, even in the cat screen neither of them were there

I also like how it changes the art when you go to their Xillia 1 costumes.

Yo.

Yooooooooooooo.

That Exoplasma fight. I haven't had that tough of a time in a single fight in this game. And what a unique and neat concept for a fight. Color me surprised. One of my fave jRPG fights in a long time

kitty dispatch question, how do I get better chances at getting every item in a specific place? I tried 10 times to get the 5th item in the first city but never got it. do I need more cats to have better chances?

along with the "mc failure", which yes, sucks a lot, I'd call the debt a failure as well, I'm not really sure what they tried to do there but it's just annoying, really. the whole (in-game) reason behind it was pretty stupid too.
for the rest I agree, an overall improvement over the first game.

Yeah, the debt system is horrible. I'm always finding myself having to give extra money when I don't need to because I always have too much money(Got the most recent equipment too :I) and she forces me to pay up.

Just beat the game, got the True Ending.
The last time I felt like this was when I beat Persona 3. So much sadness... Happiness too. It was a great ending overall, that just fit the overall tone of the game. Elle lives on, Ludger gives away his life to save hers and destroys all fractured dimensions, which was what he set out to do from the beginning. Also, was there a meaning behind teen Elle leaving old Rollo behind like that? Since he always followed her around, and now she has Pollo... Was that Rollo's last yawn, or am I putting too much thought into it, and he was simply going to take a nap at the beach?

EDIT AFTER SEEING GOOD/NORMAL ENDING:

Would I be considered an asshole if I said that I kind of liked this one better? It's very conflicting, and obviously it was done on purpose. How could anyone let a little girl die and live with themselves... but what if that little girl wasn't meant to exist in the first place, at least not yet. But then who am I to say that she doesn't deserve to exist? Jeez, these are truly hard decisions. Instead of spouting the nonsense that I have floating around my head, I'll follow my heart on this one. in the end, the True Ending made me feel sad, the Normal ending made me smile. So Normalis the winner in my opinion.

I just finished the game! Massive ending spoilers please don't click this!

I got the true ending. Overall a very solid ending and I was not expecting it to end with Ludger dying and all of the fractured dimensions to disappear. I thought either Elle would die or the fractured dimensions would disappear. And the fat, old Rollo made me smile. :D

One thing that bugged me is that I wish Elle would have called Ludger "Daddy" at some point during the end of the game. Technically he isn't her father in the Prime dimension but it would have been nice to see just how my she cared from him.

I sort of want a sequel now even though there is literally no chance. I have really grown to love these characters. Playing along side Gauis was really badass, his mystic arte was amazing!

Just got my LE. Soo I beat Jude's story in Xillia 1, is it worth it to play through Milla's story before I start up Xillia 2?
Hmm, kind of depends on how much you care about seeing Milla's perspective on all of the times they split up. I enjoyed going through it again, and it was pretty quick with 5x XP and the devil arms. However, that said, I feel like you'd probably get burned out on the area's unless you think you can tolerate the repetitiveness. I'm bored of the areas in Xillia 2, and it was a good 8 months ago when I last played Xillia.

I think so. I googled to find out more.

I just don't have any idea where this person possibly could have gotten this information. I didn't know there was parts of the game to find out more on the Kresnik family history.

It's kind of implied in the game.
After you listen to the message left back by Bisley after he goes to Canaan with Elle, when you talk to Rideaux right after, he mentions something about Bisley's wife, how she was the key of kresnik but that she was killed, BUT that she had no relation to Ludger. He then mocks him and says something about him not even knowing his own family origins.

Pancakes

hot, steaming, as melted butter slips into the cracks, drizzled with sticky sweet syrup OH GOD
I really wish we had a separate thread for ending spoilers. I accidentally highlighted something I really didn't want confirmed. Oh well, my mistake.

Just finished chapter 11 and god damn. This isn't the first Tales games with
important characters dying
but they really lay it on you in this sequel. Hopefully Zesteria is a little more lighthearted.

Muzets first character quest... I can't handle it.

It was just too much for any person to handle. Muzet is amazing.

Not really no, at best you see some extra scenes but I wouldn't bother.

how do you guys play with Ludger? I don't swap weapons too much and I'm using dual blades more than anything else.

After fighting my first real boss, I have started to click with switching between the weapons. I only recently got the guns anyway. But It's interesting because going back out into the field, there are definitely certain weapons that are better with certain monsters. I think I'm starting to get a flow where I check to see what the enemies' weaknesses are if I don't already know, then switch to that weapon. If I'm far away, sometimes I switch to the gun just so I can get my TP up at a safe distance. Alvin seems to be a good link partner for combos with the gun. The dual blades are definitely the default for me, or rather, I think I switch between the blades and the guns the most.

---
I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to get addicted to playing and can't wait till I get home so I can continue. It's true that the reused maps are a little bit disappointing, but the character convos and battles are fun. I think mainly, Tales games have this certain JRPG formula that I crave in a game every once in a while, and there aren't really any games that scratch the itch quite like this series does (Star Ocean used to as well, but I don't think we'll be seeing another for a long time).

There needs to be Spoiler thread, I'm on a touch screen phone and have been clicking spoilers left and right through simply trying to move the page up, it's unfair that people who are trying to ask questions and learn more about the games systems are beinf hit with walls of black bars.

It's probably all from supplemental materials/side-story novels, etc. Every Tales game has a shit ton of stuff like that with details that never made it into the game (like the first Xillia with the backstory for all of the Chimeriad, etc.)
