Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

Not open for further replies.
Dan managed to graduate college but he virtually never went to class. He said he attended less class in 5.5 years than a typical freshman would in their first semester or something like that. He seemed eager to explain how he pulled it off but Brad didn't want to know the details.

I feel like Brad was speaking in the interest of the site, like he was thinking "Oh shit I have to stop Dan before this goes too far."

There is something a little bit weird about talking in the company of the person who hired you about how you didn't really do the work for your degree. I'm sure jeff didn't hire him for his film studies or whatever degree, but it is kinda of a weird thing.

If you think that's impressiv look up some of Brad's old video reviews to see his energy in action.

Basically "I never went to class and did 'some shit' to get through in five and a half years."

Oh Dan. :p

I don't know what to make of 5.5 years in a US college context, though.

No like seriously fuck him. The cutesy "ho,ho me don't know so gud" shtick was endearing, but when this motherfucker is actively boasting about cheating his way through college? No, fuck that piece of garbage.

I'll probably get over this in like a day, but seriously what the fuck. I'm livid af right now. People like him are fucking scum.

I might have missed something, but how exactly did he cheat his way through college? He skipped classes... which is dumb because you're paying for them, and you probably won't do well in a class if you don't actually attend lectures, but I fail to see how he cheated.

He never said he cheated.

He alluded to doing "some stuff" to get through school before Brad stopped him from explaining further

EDIT: whoops, misread this as "He said he never cheated"

If he really didn't cheat, that's less shitty

If anything colleges are more accommodating of people not attending now by uploading lectures and notes online.

Yeah I'd say that's you jumping to conclusions.

Dan was itching to tell the story though, I bet he accidentally returns to it at some point and says what he did.

It's not crazy to interpret Dan's remarks that way.

Generally you do it in 4 years unless you can't decide on a major or maybe a class you need isn't offered every semester. I knew a guy who took 6 years because he inexplicably had four majors. He actually attended class, though.

It's a long time, and means you were taking very few units per semester/quarter or failing classes. Or you're like, a double major in Law and Engineering or something crazy that Dan definitely was not.

Ok, yeah, that's what I figured. 5-7 years is the average time to get your MA in uni and I can't imagine Dan getting the college equivalent (if there even is such a thing). I need to brush up on this subject.

Oh god, yeah. I had classes of 200-300 students where it was totally unreasonable for the teacher to keep track. I went to class most of the time because I didn't have friends to get notes and readings from.

I turned off the stream because my internet started acting up halfway through the college talk, so I may have missed where he said that.

Which probably amounts to weird extra credit projects. Jeff once told a story about how he passed high school theater class by donating to the teacher's food drive for extra credit. He payed $20 for a passing grade.

That reminds me of my High School theater experience, which has nothing to do with anything except I want to share.

My theater/drama teacher forgot to put my final project grade in, resulting in an Incomplete. She was let go at some point (don't know why), and was unwilling (not unable) to correct her mistake. So, in high school I got all As and Bs except an F in Drama that I didn't deserve.

5 years is becoming somewhat more common, especially when the major requires a semester-long internship.

Oh man I totally forgot Drew was playing a game. Thought I was listening to a podcast.

I feel like it's not just Drew segments. Most of the time when someone's playing on the PC it turns into random conversation between couch people while PC person just kind of plays.

Chill, that's what university rankings are for.

People know there are some degrees from certain universities that aren't worth the paper they're written on. He probably didn't even need to cheat.

It helps when the game is not appealing to watch.

I hate to say it but drew picks a lot of clunkers.

Hopefully Dan didn't cheat as in having someone else take his tests or hacking computer records. That would be gross. But skipping lots of classes and still eventually graduating by is not something for us to get worked up about. Shu Yoshida did that in Japan and talked about it at length in an interview by Mark Cerny this year.

Also, he's a film major from a school in the midwest.

I have some serious doubts as to the quality of the program regardless of the university.

It's also not the most difficult major to kind of bullshit your way through.

In New Zealand undergrad degrees were only 3 years because they don't make you take all sorts of courses unrelated to you major(s). So I was able to get a graduate degree in 4 years.

So? I've passed a 12+ classes going to just exam days just doing the work on my own. So many proffessors are horrible and lazy as fuck, regurgitating book info or even just reading word for word off a powerpoint. There's no point of going to those classes unless you don't have the discipline to get the word done faster and better alone.

90% college is you doing the work yourself, unless the professor is simply horrible or amazing they don't matter at all for the majority of hands off courses.

I do understand the frustration with what he was saying, though. I worked my fucking ass off through college, attended the vast majority of my classes while working full-time and barely scraping by. To hear a University education trivialized so much does rub me the wrong way.

I remember when I was high school, people would tell me stuff like, "And you don't even HAVE to go to class in college!"

And then I went to college and most classes had attendance policies in that if you missed like more than 2 days, you would drop a whole letter grade.

Some BS.

Some majors and classes are hard. Others aren't.

I worked my ass off with hard classes and teachers, but whatever. Histology turns out to be really fucking hard. Psych and religion classes? Not so much.

I just know I'm smarter and a better worker than the lazy drunks that got business degrees. Don't bother me none.

Most of those classes were lazy fucks who did nothing but read off their shitty powerpoint and were sad the kids who never showed up got A's anyways.

Also if you've stepped on a college campus this decade you'd know outside of the most rigorous programs, college degrees are very much trivialized. Instructors are desperate to fail no one because department heads are pressured to keep as many students in and paying as possible.

I realized that college is an extremely different experience depending your major when 2 of my roommates, who were criminal justice majors, explained to me that "gen ed courses are the hardest."

Same here, I'm studying Journalism and I simply would not pass if I didn't go to classes. It was pretty infuriating to hear him just skipping almost all his classes and still passing.

Yep, you're absolutely right. It's silly and insecure for me to be offended by what Dan was saying.

Haha, exactly!

In my opinion, that's exactly how it should be. There is value to being in a classroom environment beyond just the information in the course's text (ideally anyway, I know a lot of schools suck).

Skipping class and just showing up for tests if you already know the material isn't horrible. It's still shitty, but not horrible.

But I don't think it's crazy to interpret "I did some stuff to get through college" and "Let me tell you how I gamed the system" as him saying "I cheated"

But whatever, I'll stop talking about this.

I teach a college Cognitive Psych class.
I don't have an attendance policy, but i do have in class assignments that are for a grade.

If Dan could pass classes without ever going to them his professor was doing something wrong/not giving out enough information that wasn't just in the book.
