|OT| topics will now go live on game launch date

Generally these should follow the same rules we've had before, i.e we typically don't encourage directionless hype threads.
Alrighty then. While I support the general idea, I'll echo the thoughts of some other posters saying the day before would perhaps be most appropriate. They tend to be Monday's for many releases and it seems logical to throw the thread up at the beginning of the week just before the game is released.

Maybe something to consider but scaling it back from a week I think is a good move, although the hype train can be fun.

it was always fun seeing the hype accumulate in OTs over the week, until it exploded magnificently like a giant penis ejaculating on release day

seems like the right move though

Subtle.

Sounds like a good change. I figured something may be in the works after seeing stuff like Destiny nearly reach OT2 before the game even came out.

Agreed, 24 hours prior to release, a place to get excited with others and even get some feedback from those who got the game early.

The "place to get excited" part is one of the main concerns in the first place. We get communities forming before the game is even out that are established based on being incredibly hyped for something (which, by its nature, is all positivity), and then someone comes in with a dissenting opinion and they're run out of town. We want OTs to be where people talk about the game they're playing, not the game they're anticipating.

I'd much rather it be the day before the launch. Half the point of an OT is to see info condensed in to one place, often times it can help with a purchase decision etc. Its always good to see early impressions etc.

Good move. The threads were getting ridiculous in their length pre launch and many people get upset when others who have pre release copies spoil the game.

In all seriousness, where then to start a hype thread where you and other like minded hypist can hype each other up?

Seems like the right call after Destiny reaching OT2 before launch. The week leading up will also have ample pre-release threads from new news so people will still have places to discuss the game before launch.

Pretty solid idea but maybe 24 hours before release is better though.

How derailed could a thread possibly get in 24 hours?
don't answer that

Hmm, I think some of the most fun and 'hype-inducing' convos happen in the week lead up to a game's release, that's too bad.

I'd actually be inclined to agree with you Shinobi. I've only recently begun posting here, and I find the conversation and atmosphere in OTs before a game's release to be fun and exciting. It helps me get excited or "hyped" for that particular game in the days leading up to release. I respect the decision, but I'll miss the OTs for sure.

I am okay with this, I always usually check the OT threads later after I got my hands on the game so this works with me.

Great idea. Destiny was on its 2nd thread before the game even came out lol.

You should have seen the Smash Bros thread we went through a lot threads and that was before the game was given a release date.

charlequin covered this on the last page. It's already been a rule that we don't encourage hype threads, although recently a few have slipped past. We want new information leading up to release to be highlighted in new threads, and we don't want threads whose only purpose is to contain conversations like "OMFG I CAN'T WAIT" "YEAH BRO" "HIGH FIVE!" "DAY 1!!!" "FUCK YEAH!" ad nauseum.

I absolutely agree with all that, good call guys.

You guys should make it so that users should wait till games are officially announced before they can claim to do the OT too. Not just hinted at in development.

Damn, alright. I can get down with this. Gonna be sad in some respects, because it was cool to see the community get together before the game released.

This change makes a lot of sense. It's a bit annoying going into an |OT|, only to be greeted with dozens of prerelease speculation and hype (generally, the first page or so is "so hyped", "day 1" etc).

It's much more interesting to read discussion about a game that people are playing than to read about hype for a game no one has played yet.

Extremely disappointing, I think this will only encourage more echo-chamber "hype threads", that are even more toxic to discourse than OTs can sometimes be.

I'm curious what exactly happens in a situation like tonight where The Evil Within leaks and folks are already playing it? I agree that a week was too long but games get out there one way or another for folks way ahead of Midnight EST of launch night.

We've been looking at this kind of thing, as well. In general, I think the |OT| |OT|'s purpose has been perverted quite a bit since its inception, and we've had to deal with issues many times where someone thinks they "claimed" a thread and have the right to make the thread and not collaborate at all, when in reality the purpose of the thread is to set up collaboration. If multiple people want to work on it, they should be able to.

Reasoning seems logical.

However I value many OTs mostly for their OPs. The bundled information and presentation is always worth the read and can convince me to go ahead and pre-order the game to then be onboard day one. On that note I'm also a bit disappointed about this direction.

Yeah, I have enjoyed getting hyped with the community and I actually have made some friends by chatting with enthusiasts during the week.

Once the game hits, a flood of new people come in and the game discussion moves very fast.

Would it somehow be possible to have OT's appear one week before, but have them in the Game Community forum, which are then moved to, or reset on launch day?

Good idea but I agree day of release is a little late, day before would be better I think. Also maybe we should have prerelease/hype threads too.

Cool, makes sense. It's good to see the forum continue to evolve.

I understand why you're changing this, it makes a lot of sense. But I still can't help but feel a bit of disappointment as well. The pre-release hype is part of the fun. At least for me.

Great idea, I'm all for it. I was always a little confused about the fact that the threads showed up a week before the game and had lots of pre-release stuff in them.

Makes a ton of sense to me. I agree that some of the more recent threads have gotten quite massive well before the official release and while I enjoy getting hyped up for an upcoming game, I think some of the more massive threads have felt a bit diluted up to release and almost alienating to those who end up coming in at launch trying to minimize their own exposure pre-launch.

OTs definitely become ridiculous sometimes with an echo-chamber of people all parroting the same opinions until both the thread size and opinion bubble reaches critical mass when the game is released, but I disagree with the limit being day of release.

A week in advance is definitely excessive, but two-three days in advance is when people start receiving copies from stores that break street dates, early reviews start getting posted and pre-release communities can be formed easily while not existing long enough to form an insular hype-based community (hopefully).

At the very least, I feel it should be the day prior to release.

Agreed. If this had been in place for Destiny then on release day there would have been pages created every 3 seconds. I can't even imagine trying to ask a question in a thread on speed.

Edit: I think barring echos in the OT would be awesome. Don't allow, "Zomg! This game!" type of posts. I use OTs to ask questions about the game and it's hard to read through the crap to find my answer.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I guess I'll be the outsider who doesn't like the idea.

I want to talk about a game leading up to its release. Discuss trailers, go over early impressions, discuss Twitch streams, find unboxings on YouTube, talk about achievements, stores selling early, pre order bonuses, etc, etc....

I guess... What's the "harm" in having it up for a few days before release? The conversation is already going? Eh, I've never complained, even when jumping into an OT two weeks after release.
