Does Bungie know what they're doing with Destiny?

Bungie never supported their games properly after launch. Its no suprise Destiny is no exception, especially since 2 DLCs and the Sequel are already in development

The game is the best advertisement for WoW and the Master Chief Collection I've seen yet.
This. After quitting Destiny a few weeks ago I'm really looking forward to buy Warlords of Draenor (for the MMO aspects with a fair loot system) and MCC for the real FPS multiplayer experience.

What a load of shit.

They've done regular updates since Halo 2, which was released 10 years ago. Destiny has seen weekly updates. Releasing DLC is supporting the game, directly expanding on the existing content and adding more raids, which many praise as their favorite activity.

I have had no issues at all since launch on ps4.

Either you have been lucky enough to play at the right times or your PS4 is magical.

It is good, by the criteria its producer(s) were targeting.

As far as Destiny goes I think Bungie new exactly what they were and are doing with Destiny.

Well some of the stuff could have been really good like Public Events. When they kick In you have your special moment but why didn't Bungie go further? Where are my world bosses which only can killed by 12 players ? Where are my random NPC's in the world who give me special quests or events like "lets do a race with your shiny racers on the moon" or "lets do open world PvP". The lack of imagination in this game is really scary. Not to speak of the fucking loot which has absoluty nothing to contribute to the gameplay except "light level".

I'm not paying a dime on the DLC until I can figure out what the story is. Or where the fun after the 1st 12 hours is. Or when I feel my $60 was justified for a digital download under the lure of buying for the old gen and getting the new gen version for free.

Complaints are super valid and only makes the whole thing sting worse since I really enjoy playing this game. But the way it's being handle by the dev team now is just abysmal. Reminds me of Naughty Dog during the whole 1.05 debacle. They just aren't listening.

I agree with OP to an extent. The game never delivered on its promises. We got a shell of what Destiny was meant to be. Yet still, the core is so strong. I still enjoy murdering countless aliens for absolutely no reason what so ever. It just feels good.

I have grown tired of chasing gear, so the games luster has worn off a bit, but I'll definitely grab the DLC, as I have hope this will be more in line with what I expected of the launch game. That they are milking me of an extra $15 to $30 irks me, of course, but at the same time I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Bungie bit off way more than they could chew, and are currently choking on it. The DLC should give them a little breathing room to right the wrongs. If the DLC doesn't deliver, well, that will most likely end my Destiny playing.

Yes, people are hooked on it like it's crack and adding content to Destiny is laughably easy as the Queens missions and Iron Banner have demonstrated.

I have a hard time understanding how anyone could think public events are good. There's nothing good about them from I experienced. They're nothing but boring scripted events on set timers :/

"defend this fallen satelite because reasons"

"kill this enemy who is out for a jog with infinity shield because reasons"

"stop them from mining this patch of dirt because reasons"

Those aren't things being added to the game. That's just content already in the game that bungie arbitrarily decided that you're only gonna have access to on rare occasions. They're no different than what bungie is doing with the other pvp modes than aren't always available

Yeah, it's like they saw Guild Wars 2 Public event system and thought 'Boy this is a good idea, let's take it!'

When they were first revealed a few years ago, I thought they'd spawn if enough players were gathered around an area. It'd be a sort of dynamic matchmaking where people who congregate in an area can trigger an event. "We've got public events that naturally occur in the world" as they said.

But they really are just on timers throughout the day. Most of the time I've seen one, I've been the only one around to do anything about it.

BTW awesome post OP, I really love the line "Destiny is the first game I want to play that doesn't want me to play it." That pretty much sums it up for me.

The third week into the launch of the game one of the only mates I had that was still playing the game regularly went to Europe and I was left to try and play this POS alone. Best mistake I ever made because I immediately realised all the things I hated about the game....least of which was that Bungie was trying it's best to have me not playing at all.

I'm convinced Bungie intended for it to be this way so that they don't have to spend any more money on servers, staff and resources to keep the game alive. Get the launch monies, have players quit, then move onto the next rip off project. Fortunately for me i've already learnt my lesson and their next project is DOA.

Too bad they nerfed the Mythoclast (Mythoclast means myth destroyer), if the exotic weapons are made to make the player feel overpowered than let them be overpowered. It was better if they removed them from the competitive multiplayer.

Halo: CE went through an absurd number of radical gameplay changes throughout its development, Halo 2 had to be completely sliced up and stitched back together in order to get the game to run properly and make its release date, and unless I'm mistaken I believe Halo 3 also had some major revisions at the last minute.

While I really like Bungie, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying destiny, I think they've always been a company with good ideas and products but poor resource/time management as well as focus to go with it. Destiny just happens to be the one game that didn't pan out in the end.

Its like an amalgamation of all their faults. The game has a lot of good but contradictory design decisions, a (nonexistent) story that is all over the place, and as I'm sure everyone has figured out by now went through some serious changes at the last minute.

I think Bungie had an idea of what they wanted to do with Destiny but for whatever reasons failed to hit the mark. Honestly in my opinion whats going to be telling as to whether or not they've managed to assemble some grand plan is when the first DLC hits and we get to see how much of the game's content is added or changed with it.

Despite all the very reasonable complaints, many of which I noticed and complained about almost day 1 with my purchase (number of currencies, lack of social features, constant travelling with orbit and tower, connection issues and a bunch of other stuff) I still had a great time with the game playing with friends. I feel I have my $60 worth but I am somewhat disappointed with the game itself, more from a wasted potential point of view than it being unfun. I really felt that the game could have been much better and I have a feeling that there is still a chance with patches but at this point it may be too little too slow.

Really good post OP!

I might be the target market for this game. I've never really played an MMO before (apart from an hour of DC Universe ) and have only ever played spots of MP FPS's here and there.

I don't really have much to compare it with, so it's hard for me to really empathise with the criticisms. All I know is that I've sunk about 150 hours into it, had some amazing co op experiences (not just the raid, but the heroic and nightfall strikes too) and it's the first competitive MP game I've ever really felt at ease with.

Even though I'm getting near the end of the endgame stuff (nearly maxed out my factions, just need raid armour and so on), I'm still logging on to do bounties here and there and the daily heroic story missions.

I'll probably get pilloried for this, but I've not really felt there is that little content. It feels about comparable to the only CoD I've played (Ghosts). If I'd have played MMOs before I'd probably feel differently but as it is I really love Destiny and think it's one of the best games I've played all year.

I was addicted to destiny till I hit level 19. Then I took a two day break. After tha I realised that I wasn't playing te shitty unbalanced crucible or re-playing strikes because it was fun; I was doing it because I wanted to get that slightly better armor piece/weapon so I could start the cycle all over again. I haven't gone back since then.

So many missed opportunities. Theatre mode, custom games, a story and characters that are actually worth a damn, interesting enemy encounters and solid pacing. These are all things that should have been in day one and would have made this game something special. But as it stands, it's just a boring, repetitive game with solid gunplay.

This isn't a bad idea at all, Bungie should look into this and buff the weapons. The Monte Carlo and Bad Juju suuuuuuck... I'd also like to equip a full exotic armor set...but it's nice to want things I guess.

long time bungie fanboy signing in here!

i played the game for 160+ hours and all the criticism is dead on. i keep trying to give this game the benefit of the doubt by making up justifications for it, but today is the final straw. i justified that this game isnt a competitive multiplayer game, fine! cool! but it is what it is. a casual ass multiplayer random fuck spray of nothing. after i play 400+ games of your shitty pvp and learn by myself how everything works (because we were never told anything...) you go and change the whole fucking thing so i have to re-learn it all.... guess what. the game isnt good enough to justify me playing another second.

i spent 7 hours straight beating the hardmode raid, got super hyped when the mythoclast dropped, and now its sitting in my inventory rendered useless by a nerf.

get real. /rant

I really want to enjoy Destiny, unfortunately not even great gunplay can save it from the 100 bad decisions made. It feels like Bungie wanted to make a ‘console friendly’ MMO but end up just nerfing their game. Also that story… wtf.

I'm having a blast with the game. And talking to people who don't spend time talking on message boards all day, I've found that a lot of people like the game. Frankly I'm getting tired of all the shit talking that Destiny gets.

Anyway, I've logged 90 hours into the game, and I'm really for the new content come december. I'm also waiting for another friend to start playing, and I'm going to start a new character so I can play through the story with him. I've been having a blast playing with another friend every night.

The game does well for casual play, for a few hours a night/week. It has it's faults but it is my most played next gen game as of now.

I feel actions speak louder than words.

I have played Destiny effectively nightly since release, as well as several 7-8 hour sessions on the weekends. In addition, my wife and several friends are on just as often, if not more, and it's pretty much become an expectation that we're on every night unless something comes up.

Bungie know what they're doing, even if the game isn't perfect.

I agree with the OP, I want to keep playing Destiny but it's stopping me. I got all 3 characters past 20 and I'm done. This game purchase has even made me rethink going digital only. Cause I want to sell the game & I can't. The RNG and constant replaying of the same levels kill everything for me and it's so instilled in the fabric of the game that it is what it always will be.

Especially hearing the cheesy ass lines in that shit of cutscenes they call a story. Yet I have to go thru a cutscene every time I replay an area.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the game. Most of the people I talk to in person really enjoy Destiny. It's just the internet dwellers that constantly talk badly about it. Just the other day I talked to this guy and he said it was the best first person shooter ever made. That just shows you the difference between people.

I also fall into the positive camp, and while I think the game could use more content (because I want more) I've already spent 90 hours and I'm still going to be playing the raid a few more times until the new content in December.

It's a solid game, and it's quite fun despite a few shortcomings. I think all the negativity the game is getting is mostly unwarranted from people who wanted the game to be something else.

how can anyone complain about the nerf of the mythoclast (or autorifles in general) with a straight face?

I've gone from thinking Bungie had just screwed up and somehow didn't realise how bad the grinding and slow pace would be, to realising this slog fest and unfair gambling system is entirely deliberate.

The straw that broke the camels back for me was Iron Banner. I realised that at my rate of progression it'd take me over 100 hours to get to rank 3 just to buy the chest armour I wanted that was only really aesthetically different to the one I had, and in 130+ chances if seen at the end of each match I'd not seen a single event specific legendary drop.

I'll finish working to buy a legendary heavy weapon, pick up the exotic I want when Xur gets it in stock, and get around to completing the raid at some point, but the games just not rewarding enough for the amount of effort it requires.

I did have over 60 hours of fun with it mind, and I've already got the first to expansions covered thanks to getting the limited edition, so I'm happy I bought it, and hold out hope the DLC will improve things.

Fantastic breakdown, OP.

I think the main problem Bungie has with loot and RNG is they have so few items. Exotic, Legendaries and even blue and green items are so few that if it the loot system worked properly, everyone who's played the game for 20+ hours might have every piece of equipment there is.

Heck, just one look at Xur is evidence of this. He sells the same item week after week. Well, not exactly the same items but close. Bungie should have a team or something developing more Legendary, Exotic items to plug that hole.

In a way, it's baffling that they didn't see these issues beforehand. Who on earth would want the same Exotic gear that everyone has? Same with weapons?

At this point, I'm too tired with the game to complain about its faults, and especially since OP nailed it.

PvP and PvE has no bearing on how well you do. So right now I see a lot of people go AFK and pray upon the RNG lords to bless them even if they do squat. Did Bungie not foresee that? If so, that's unbelievable.

Building faction/Vanguard/Crucible rep is a way to earn Legendary gear, but think about this: after level 3, what's the point? See?! Again, it's like Bungie didn't think this thoroughly.

I've stopped playing Destiny for about a week now. The "events" are seriously underwhelming since they're the same story mission shit with new (lackluster) rewards. I'll repeat what others have been parroting before: Bungie only wants you to play THEIR way, even if their way is subpar.

I've been playing since launch but I've yet to tackle the Nightfall or Raid. You know why? Because I can't find that many people playing at the same time as I have who wants to do 'em. I've already tried GAF, but nope. SEE?! I've poured a ton of hours into the game but no Raid for me since Bungie doesn't want matchmaking in that mode, Nightfall or even others for some stupid reason.

Loot cave was the most social part of Destiny, but Bungie took it out since it's not how THEY want people to play. Well, people wouldn't even be camping a damn cave if they made RNG and loot a fun way to earn.

At the end of the day, Destiny has core mechanics, but a broken loot system that suggests Bungie bit off more than it can chew with Destiny. Don't get me wrong, I still like Destiny and I still might come back provided the DLC brings something good, but it's nowhere near Halo. I agree with the others that maybe the key personnel that left affected Bungie way more than we know. Either that or they got lucky with Halo.

I don't get why people are still playing this.
It feels like the distillation of everything wrong with modern video games.

It's just so unbelievably boring, even the competitive multiplayer.

I'm not one for SalesGaf much, but I think that only the expansion DLC sales can decide this question, no matter how much negativity abounds on various forums. I'd wager a sizable enough percentage of players who can't stand the game are still thoroughly enthralled by its progress bars and loot hunt - broken though they be - because there is still a pretty great shooter under there (under a lot of crap), and those that love to grind for loot need only the smallest of excuses to grind and grind some more. Some real sense of a pot of gold on the other side of that DLC rainbow is all thats needed.

If this was an MMO it'd be a failure if they couldn't keep the playerbase happy each and every month - but Destiny won't be measured by month to month churn. It'll be measured and judged by expansion-to-expansion buy-in.

To be honest the people I have talked to in person think Destiny is shit. Not the shit, just shit. Now while some of them may be 'internet dwellers' who 'talk on message boards some of the day' a lot of them couldn't tell you what OS their computer was running, both groups still think Destiny is crap.

Also saying there is nothing with the game is a bit daft, if there was nothing wrong we wouldn't have 100 threads about it a week. It's not the game it was sold as, ie. the freaking story for one.

The loot mechanic in this game pisses me off to no end, but damn if it isn't also the reason I keep coming back. Finished the raid with two characters yesterday: my Titan found a Shotgun and my Warlock found boots and a Sniper Rifle. I can't complain, but I also received the Chatterwhite shader twice, in addition to last week. Game should really start taking into account what you have in your inventory and vault.

Also, Raid completion should net you at least a piece of Raid gear or an Exotic weapon. The moment Atheon goes down, let the game calculate if you've completed the rest of the Raid that week or just joined in for the boss. If it's the former, just give something guaranteed: destroying the Conflux of Time and being rewarded with some Ascendant Energy is just bullshit.

Destiny is the strangest game I've played. It's obnoxious, infuriating and, more often than not, totally unfair, but it's also incredibly fun. Bungie still knows how to make good combat.

I know they (Bungie) got DDoS'ed a few times, could have been that

Nah, the way their game makes connections is just incredibly shitty. I couldn't play the game for over a week when it came out because I'd get constant centipede errors. Now they've fixed those, but insodoing have awakened the wrath of the zebra bug, which hits a lot of people once or twice a day.

See I just don't agree with most of the shit talking it gets. For every fault that people complain about I've found to be fine, or even good, for the most part. RNG? Don't focus on that specificially; do factions and buy most of your equipment. Even still I've gotten a lot of good weapons eventually through RNG. Even when I got to the heavy grind around level 25, I started playing coop with a friend and then we just forgot about the grind and had fun doing the dailies and the raid and eventually we got where we needed to be. I think that's basically the point; if you find people to coop with then you start simply having fun and eventually RNG will smile upon you.
Story? Okay, that's pretty empty, but the gameplay and coop is where the game is at. The story is something that I believe could have been done much better, but it doesn't really detract from the game overall in my opinion, as it hasn't kept me from putting in 90 hours of the game.

Multiplayer? Well it's fun and they make a reason to keep playing it. It's simple, but I've never been a multiplayer kind of gamer so the fact that Bungie has made someone play multiplayer that doesn't usually says something about it. It's true that other shooters have better options for multiplayer but the fact is that multiplayer is only a part of Destiny, and not the focus. It's something you jump into for a few rounds in between strikes and other dailies. That's how I see it anyway.

I understand some criticism of the game but I just don't get all the shit talking it gets.

I think I've seen enough post-launch support to show that Bungie cares.

There's been constant tweaks and updates, and they've rolled out a few "events" too.

The problem is, the events have been woefully uninspiring. There's little incentive for end-game players, particularly with the Queen's stuff. Iron Banner wasn't as level dependent as we first though; it just wasn't distinctive enough. For anyone chasing Raid gear, there was little point in taking part in either event.

It just lacks the ambition that we were expecting, or Bungie were touting. Not surprising given the state of the narrative at launch.

The latest weekly update teased that the next event and update will excite people, but I'm not expecting anything other than modified missions we've already played, a slightly different shader and a brown ship.

We've had the conversation in the OT, but I can't help but feel like there's an overlord here pulling the strings and keeping Bungie on a tight leash. Dance with the devil...
