LEGO |OT 4| EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!

Well Lego charged my card for the full amount of my latest order. Hopefully this means I won't have to wait for my Town Hall after all.

My god. It was my most anticipated set of the year, and it exceeded my expectations.

I had a stupid grin on my face the entire time, and swooshed it multiple times throughout the build. Once complete, I had to swoosh more.

So many classic touches that filled me with childhood nostalgia. This set better be selling gangbusters and telling LEGO we need MORE!

I still have a stupid grin on my face from building it.

What set? What else?

So, do you agree that it blows the Quinjet out of the water?
I don't know if that is fair. Quinjet had the element of surprise for me. I was not expecting it to be anything noteworthy but a parts and figure pack.
SPACESHIP! has the help of nostalgia on its side. It is hard to battle nostalgia.

I don't know if I could say if it blows it away, but right now I might say SPACESHIP is better. That might be the glow of building it talking though.

All I know is that picking a top 5 this year is going to be harder than the last few for me.

If you had to pick now what would your top 5 be?

Tumbler
Spaceship
Parisian
Cooper
Milano

Would the above be in your top 5?

The Spaceship is on my "when I get new shelves" backlog, along with the (eventual purchase of the) Tumbler. Bought that set when I was in the US in June with $20 in VIP points. Can't WAIT to build it, but the only space left in my set right now is in my Star Wars section... got a good idea for the AT-AT...

Wife is out wih friends for the night while I'm home with our sleeping daughter. So I figured I'd pull a set out of stash and get to building. Might as well build the VW T1 Camper Van, right?

Imagine my horror when I find that the bags aren't numbered. Nooooooooooo, that is the bane of my existence as an AFOL who builds a set over several nights/weeks!

You left off Sea Cow. But that does show how tough it will be deciding a top 5, much less the #1 for me.

Right now part way through Super Secret Police Dropship. Let's see how this winds up.

I finally figured out something to accompany my Trike Rover; a Security Robot:

The head of the robot can be replaced with a minifig's to turn it into a smaller Exo-suit; but the LDD wouldn't let me put the helmet on that I wanted, so I went with a robot head.

Now I'll probably have to spend a week rendering pictures and then throw it up on the Ideas site.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be publishing my Top Sets of 2014 until mid-December, as I need some time to build all of the contenders that I have.

Curious as to what your opinion will be on the Dropship...

Just finished book 1. Stopping for the night. I will finish it tomorrow night and post impressions then.

Got my mosaic floors done on my Orthanc. I am pretty proud of it and I had a pretty awesome moment just a couple minutes ago when I was having trouble figuring out how to make it look a certain way when I had like an epic inception moment that I'm still "giggling with glee" about. Basically makes the design work perfect by optical illusion. I love those moments when you are building something and you totally come up with an epic technique totally on your own without any aids from online sources. It's not like I don't think someone has done something similar before, I just have never seen it or noticed it because its soo simple its brilliant. Anyways photos will be incoming tomorrow. The exterior of that floor is getting pretty ornate too. lots of texture.

I knew when I got to the fifth choice and was drawing a blank when thinking of what to suggest, that the Milano was definitely not the set that I felt would warrant being up there. You had JUST built the Sea Cow, and I had forgotten that completely during that listing moment.

Revised:
Tumbler
Spaceship
Sea Cow
Parisian
Cooper

Mixer
Milano
Constructo-Mech
SSPDropship
Ultra Agents Base Truck ($99 set)
Imperial Star Destroyer

??? Can't think of other potentials...

I don't tend to get as many sets as most of you in here, but I might write up a list of what I enjoyed this year in the coming months. I probably won't be getting too many more at this stage.

What's with all the mosaic photos? They're quite cool, just curious why you've been posting them intermediately.

Also, anyone know of a good free software to pixelate images with LEGO colors?

I found them on a LEGO advertising site, and decided to share them - one per evening - for a few days.

Just something a little different...

That's cool. Just wasn't sure if it was a teaser for something coming up since you tend to post a lot of photos of upcoming stuff.

Lots of these sound strange for Lego (Army Man, Hobo, Bartender). I don't see any that would interest me, but of course that depends on which parts they use.

Well it does sound plausible... it seems to hit a lot of the common beats we expect to see in a CMF series. Guess we'll see!

I wonder about the thief. Probably modern, which seems like a waste since we already have tons of those in the City sets. But as we know, LEGO is not beyond doing very common figures in the CMF line with unique prints. A recent example would be the Policeman minifig in series 9.

I'd like to see a historical thief though, or something a little more interesting.

One thing is for sure though when it comes to CMF series for me, it's that reading a list of figs never does it justice. Sometimes a series may feel a little bland when you just see the list, but a lot of the figures and their accessories can end up surprising you.

The list appears to have come from Brickipedia, so it could just be someone's fantasy wishlist.

There are some odd entries - Bartender and Army Man particularly.

However, I've seen a sketch of a CMF Snake Charmer.

Pick this up yesterday to meet the $75.00 for Bricktober. The set itself is pretty much another Lotr/Hobbits throw away. I don't care much for the elves hairpieces either but the Witch-King makes up for the lackluster set.

To keep with the Tolkien theme...

JANG reviews The Lonely Mountain!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGnN7mDpHeQ

Mine arrives Weds from S@H :3

Also... Brickqueen has a review of the Batman build from TRU yesterday... damn I was *right* by TRU yesterday and neglected to go inside, I could have tried to score one (bribery? :p). I like the book it comes with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NUzv5xA934

What do you guys know about these TRU build events? Do they ever have leftovers? Wonder if there is even a tiny chance i could get one today

Ecto-1? Done! Great build, maybe $10 too expensive. Minifigure tax. Had a problem with missing pieces until I figured out where those big round chrome pieces had to go. :-D Thanks, wetwired.

And I ordered a VW for 85 €.

Mine also arrives next week. I really shouldn't spoil it, but too late.

It's interesting how Jang never cares much about value, but he should have mentioned that you pay a LOT for the dragon. I think it will be worth it in the end (it's probably the only way we ever get Smaug), but maybe they will use the parts for Castle dragons later. All that construction would be wasted otherwise.

Interesting to note the connection points on the neck. Can anyone say "dragon riders"?

I went with my son yesterday, we got there at like 12:05 and there was a kid building the very last one. They were giving out other polybags in their place, we got the Star Wars arc fighter. There also had a chima option and a friends hammock.

I love that TRU does these building events for kids. Just wish I had a kid I could drag to them. :p

Also, sorry that you missed out on the batman build but at least you guys walked away with freebies.

Those things go fast... wow.

Woke up this morning and found my son had somehow started playing the mini fig game off the ones we bought at TRU yesterday. Looks pretty cool.

Smart kid :)

I already entered all my codes and got all of the series 12 minifigs in the actual game. The codes give you a random pack, so they are not tied to the minifig you opened. If you open a double it just gives you bonus money (stars) instead, so at least you get something. I have tons of money now due to all the extras o_O

I'm not sure what the benefit is to getting more characters... yeah, they look different and have different looking attacks, but none seem overly better than the others? They all have strengths and weaknesses based on their stats, but once you have say 10 or 15 characters so you have a variety of types, I don't see the point in getting more from a gameplay POV. And yet this seems to be how they are going to get most of their income -- by selling the virtual currency that you can buy the packs with.

I actually entered about 5 of the codes weeks ago before they updated the game to properly give you the in-game minifig bags... so i wasted some codes that way.

I think the game is pretty good for a free game. I wish it had a greater focus on building, but as we can see they are still adding/updating it so maybe that could happen.

The game plays sort of like Diablo so if you like the idea of a Diablo-like using LEGO then everyone should give it a few hours and see what they think.

Connection points in the neck? Easily adapted to make a Fell Beast with the same mold then.

If only...

the neck piece looks perfect for that, only issue I have is they need to be careful how big they make the rest of it. It can't be as big as smaug cause that's some bullshit. :p

Hope we get more LotR/Hobbit sets though. It's cool LEGO... take a year off if you must. But it's a great license, please don't let Megabloks snatch it up like they have with some other licenses of LEGO's past.

Have you guys seen those atrocious Assassin's Creed figures in person? I don't want that happening to LotR :(

It's a shame quite a few of the LOTR/Hobbit sets are purely lackluster except for the minifigs...=/

I'm going to take a bunch of pictures of Lego spare freebie sets to post on eBay while I am out of town. Going to use it for orthanc funds and I don't have to waste the time I have at home for building. Perfect use of away from home time.

Pretty soon we'll be expecting ex-con, inquisitor, and executioner. Definitely some entries I would not expect from LEGO. Maybe the bartender is an old-west bartender which is a bit easier to believe. Army man is very unusual. Perhaps it's an old-time army general or officer. Has LEGO ever done a "modern" army minifig? I don't count the Toy Story one. It was a minifig of a toy that was an army fig.
The City theme minifigs seem uninspirational, but I'll give them a chance depending on the final design.

Penguin Suit Guy would be awesome! Hopefully they will continue with the open face heads as those are the most fun because they can be used on any minifigs.

Hmm, I hope it's not accurate -- there's nothing Space based!

Excellent point!

Yes, same thing a lot of the superhero sets suffer from.

I agree that these are probably not real. I can see a bartender happening. It's not like they haven't had alcohol related figures before. I would like to see a 1920s style bartender. I would also love to see some other 1920's style figures. Hopefully the detective agency does that. Also we need a Jules Verne theme.

I'm not really believing that list. There are quite a few possible controversial figs in that list.

Confederate soldier, really? Bartender, Hobo? A chimney sweep and Penguin suit guy would be pretty awesome to recreate a little Mary Poppins though, or Billy Madison take your pick.

3. Penguin Suit Guy - def okay with this

When it comes to LOTR/The Hobbit I'm mostly disappointed in the lack of a Balrog or Sauron model. Those two are easily some of the most interesting designs from the movies and yet the best we got before Smaug was the bleeding Goblin King?!

I can kinda understand not doing one of the Mûmakil because of the scale needed to fit the minifigs and fortress onto its back, but two of the most iconic villain designs from the entire series? :(
