Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey |OT| Book One: Reborn

OST is from Simon Poole btw.
Same guy that did the music for The Secret World. Which is also great of course.

Didn't Marc Canham do the Secret World OST?

Edit: Looks like he only co-wrote track #1? Huh. I was under the wrong impression all along. Okay so it seems like they both were responsible for it. Not that it's much of an important issue in here, but it's good to know who the composer is for Dreamfall Chapters because it's amazing.

Could I just youtube it or should I play the other 2 games?

What's the rush? Both of those earlier games will likely be way better than this new one (which isn't even 1/5th complete!), especially the original which is one of the best games of all time. Do you want to play good games, or just want to jump on a bandwagon because the game is 'newer'?

Not having a very good run lately with PC ports are we? FF13, Ethan Carter and this all run like ass on my 970.

This isn't a port, and neither was Ethan Carter. They just used poor engines (though Ethan Carter ran great on my 980 so not sure what's happening with your 970).

You could. You could also YouTube a video of someone driving a Lamborghini Aventador, but I doubt you'll get as much out of it as if you drove one yourself.

Joking aside, you'll be missing out on the experience of you yourself discovering the universe of the game as it's slowly revealed to you. I, personally, consider The Longest Journey to be one of the greatest games made. I understand its a big time commitment, so only you can decide if it's worth it. But I don't think I'm alone in saying you're only depriving yourself if you like the genre or great stories if you decide to not play it.

I may be slightly biased though.

I still love this picture:

Anyway, finished it in 4 hours, probably a bit longer if I sat around for more of those ambient conversations. That was really fun and I'm looking forward to the rest now, definitely. It's been so long.

Did not mind the new VA for Zoe or Kian, you kinda got used to them pretty quickly. I was actually expecting it to continue but Propast was really a huge area so I'm not surprised they stopped there for now.

The art design is fantastic which is great, which is a good thing because it also never really skirts the uncanny valley line but still looks gorgeous despite not having tens of millions of dollars of production money dumped into it. There are so many shots during the cutscenes that look amazing and surprised me that I never saw anything that good in a AAA-game (even at the end/interlude part) or at least not as well composed anyway.

Oh and seriously Zoe's hair, I know it doesn't move but that's still a helluva lot of detail on it.

PC version should I say. Ethan Carter runs at 60fps but with constant stuttering.

Seems like everybody, no matter the hardware, are hitting mid-20's in Europolis. Definitely a Unity issue and not hardware. Glad, I think, that everyone's getting the lens flare weirdness too and it's not just me.

Also, I don't think the downsampling works. I have tried multiple resolutions above my native 1920x1080 and all seems great, apart from no noticeable visual or framerate difference, until I take a screenshot and it's in 1080.

Spent literally hours wandering around, walked past that, screenshotted and laughed maniacally.

Same issues here! Lens flare neons glimmering off Zoë face like wild! 20ish FPS, still stunned!

You mean downsampling via DSR? I think it might not work due to fullscreen actually being a fullscreen borderless window.

These two spots it drops to 20 every single time. No matter the settings, resolution or hardware.

and are these the lens flare issues everyone's experiencing?
I was careful to not include anything spoilery. I think these are fine. Nothing revelatory.

No, downsampling the old fashioned way. I've not tried DSR. I actually didn't know it was running fullscreen borderless. How odd.

Ahaha :D Awesome bit of nostalgia there. I was thinking to myself how classically nebulous the puzzles were with the whole broom/pillow bit during Kian's segment haha

Actually, now that I think of it, did they ever port TLJ to iOS? I remember reading about that years and years ago. Would love to replay that sometime

You should definitely check out The Longest Journey then. Which is more similar to classic Lucas Arts adventure games than something like TWD, which takes after Quantic Dream games. April Ryan and Crow are two of gamings' most classic characters. Dreamfall is good as well, but TLJ is where it's at. Both games are necessary to fully understand DF Chapters

It never got released.

Ah that's a shame. I remember thinking it was perfect for iOS given the sort of resurgence the ADV genre saw on the platform

I'm replaying it on PC now. Still hold up pretty well.

Yeah I played thru it on windows vista shortly after Dreamfall came out because I wanted to see the story of April Ryan. I'm on a Mac system now. I guess I could always boot into the win 8 partition.

Is everyone else only getting 2.1 with this game? I've got no sound coming out of the center speaker and don't see an option in-game to enable 5.1.

Beautiful screenshots. Hopefully as the devs get feedback on Steam and their own forums, they can iron out the performance issues and update the builds.

Yeah I'm putting the game down for a patch. Easily the worst performance in game I'm getting this year and that includes playing Dead Rising 3, Watch Dogs, and Final Fantasy XIII. Since we have to wait for new episodes I won't won't feel like it's as big of a loss to wait.

I'm also going to wait for a patch. Made it to a very vibrant area and it's practically unplayable even on lower settings.

I may wait to continue playing, depending on how fast a patch comes. I already gave em my money so i did my part making sure these chapters get finished. What i played was wonderful. Moreso than you might expect.

Only about an hour in. I absolutely adore it so far. The rain on the windows! Umph.

Good writing trumps literally everything else in a video game for me, I've decided. Ragnar, you still got it, bro. So few games feel like there are *real* people talking, and this is one of 'em.

Possible game breaking bug?

After talking to the lost lady in Europolis, Shitbot flew into the air and disappeared. He reappeared in the garage were Zoe works but he won't follow me outside

Did you point him up? Go up those stairs, and find him there to continue on with the adventure with Shitbot! It's funny that it reappeared in the shop, you gotta go speak to it on higher ground!

I just finished it after 8ish hours. I absolutely adored it.

Spoiler discussion follows, beware.

These choices- holy goodness. The end Telltale statistics roundup was rad- "YOUR CULINARY CHOICES WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES." Shouldn't have played it so god damn safe! The discussion with Queenie was pretty damn real for me- I didn't want to bullshit her at all, and she respected that open honesty. And oh my, that baby section with Saga was awesome- tiptoeing past Magnus like a boss! I kept fighting my urges to distance from Reza, and just really loved interactions with Baruti and Mira.

Gaaaaah it was so good! I could spend days just taking in Europolis, appreciating the stunning art direction even with the crazy lens flare. I think the choices I made weren't in line with who I thought Zoë was supposed to be, and more in line with who I think I am now- it was emotionally heavy. As it should be, I just- some of this writing is so perfect.

Magical worlds, falling endlessly in dreams, finding yourself or maybe remembering? It's ineffable.

Can they even patch that if it's a Unity issue ?

It's so nice to play adventure games with good production values again. First Broken Age and now this. No bad VA or artwork that looks awkward.

"Zanechte, prosím, vaše odpadky ve mě" XD

I knew that Propast is part of Prague, but that totally caught me off guard especially since it is a talking bin and also because there is no Czech anywhere else I have seen so far, no billboards, people don't speak it, nothing, except bins :D

A shame that there are no Prague landmarks :(

Love the game to far. Had to adjust gfx options down to make it start (iMac). Visuals, music, dialogue and plot are AAA+.

After playing meh stories for so long, the intelligence and language in this game is like a fresh breath of air. Bungie should hire Tørnquist on the spot for some refreshing of the Destiny story.

I enjoyed my time with it, a bit short but the writing and atmosphere feels like Dreamfall and TLJ. I really hope they release the other chapters quickly though.

Anybody else having gamepad issues? I'm using a generic Xinput controller with MS' X360 drivers, and I still can't get the game to detect it.

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Sorry, another Dreamfall question:

I just did the "4 musical notes" puzzle. This has to be the worst puzzle I've ever encountered. The only way to know the answer was to remember a tune hummed by 2 guys you killed, and you can never go back and listen to it? I would have never in a million years made this connection myself, thank god for walkthroughs. Are there other puzzles this arbitrary and impossible in the game from this point on? If so, I'm giving up

Performance now that I started the actual game isn't all that bad. It seems like the initial scene is a worst-case scenario, at least if you are GPU limited at very high resolutions.

I think I'm gonna shelve DF til the patch comes in. I know the rMBP shouldn't struggle this much to run the game, and I'd prefer to have a memorable fresh run where I'm now watching desynced mouths flapping along at 9 FPS during cutscenes. Just totally takes me out of it :l

Anywho, Ragnar's definitely still got it. It just feels like people talking, as Feep put it. I've always enjoyed the quirky, witty, sort of Amy Padillo-esque writing that Ragnar breathes into his women.

Final question, is anyone playing thru this with a DS4 on a Mac? It seems that OS X recognized it as a controller and ironically enough, every action seems to work accept for the most crucial of all: interact/confirm. So I can walk around, run, focus on things, access the menu, everything except play the damn game. I've tried a few controller map apps such as Enjoyable/enjoy2 but for some strange reason, even though the controller is recognized as "wireless controller 1", I can't seem to program any buttons since the app doesn't recognize the buttons when I press them. Any help with this would be gravely appreciated

Just finished the first chapter and a bit of the second. I have to echo what everyone else said, everything is spot-on so far (except for the performance). Great writing and art.

Finished Book One. The ending was super sudden, but I am so excited to play the future episodes. Dreamfall is back, and it's better than ever!

Does anyone know what the intended release schedule is like? Are we looking at a TellTale schedule or a Kentucky Route 0 one?

They said this a couple of months ago:
We don’t know yet how long the wait will be between subsequent books — that depends on a complex mix of content, code, quality and bugs — but we’re planning an aggressive release schedule.

The consensus on the RedThread forum is that we can expect Book 2 sometime between Dec-Feb 2015. I doubt it will be KR0. At least I hope not.

There's 4 more books coming, right? It took me about 4 hours to finish 1. If so, that's a damn meaty game that I am fucking stoked to play.
