Developer: Red Thread Games
Release Date(s):
  • Book One: Reborn - October 21st, 2014

PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT NOTES:

If you haven't played The Longest Journey or Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, and wish to do so unspoiled, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER -- THERE ARE SOME SPOILERS FOR PREVIOUS GAMES IN THE OT. While I am trying to gloss over the biggest plot points and spoilers, it is impossible to recap the series without referencing some spoilers from both games. I strongly, strongly urge anyone who has not played the previous games to do so first: not only because they are great games, with The Longest Journey remaining a seminal classic of the medium, but because your ability to understand and enjoy the rich worlds will be increased dramatically with familarity with the material. While you can play this game without any knowledge of the previous games, and it has been designed to bring you up to speed, please do yourself a favor and experience the entire Longest Journey Saga.

This OT will be evolving and changing based on feedback from you guys, based on what you want to see, and as more episodes get released for the game. Please be mindful of others and put spoilers for Dreamfall Chapters in their proper tags. My goal for this OT is an atmosphere of excitement, discussion, speculation, and enjoyment. All discussion and criticism is welcome: please make and keep this thread civil and welcoming for everyone playing the game, regardless of their reaction to it. Thank you, and enjoy!

Against a backdrop of forces larger than human comprehension, an eternal struggle between Order and Chaos, and a Balance to preserve them, are the human stories of people on physical and metaphorical journeys -- of self-discovery, of learning, of loss, and of triumph. This is The Longest Journey Saga.

A sprawling universe built and revealed across two previous games, The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, introduced players to April Ryan, Zoe Castillo, Stark, Arcadia, and the Balance. Fantastical worlds full of imaginative, detailed lore, populated by memorable characters with depth and humor, and full of sharp wit and clever writing. A saga 15 years in the making and counting, the last game released in 2006, ending with an agonizing cliffhanger and leaving behind unanswered questions and open mysteries. The first part of a planned duology, Dreamfall left players anxious for answers. But as Funcom, the publishers of The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, shifted focus, the games' writer and director, Ragnar Tørnquist shifted with it. Going on to produce the MMO The Secret World, fans were left with an announcement of the sequel, Dreamfall Chapters and little else. Years passed. Following the release of The Secret World, Tørnquist left Funcom to start a new studio, Red Thread Games. Staffed by other Funcom veterans, including those who worked on previous games in the series, the studio secured the rights to the IP from Funcom and launched a Kickstarter to fund the creation of Dreamfall Chapters independently.

Eight years after the release of Dreamfall, and 15 years since The Longest Journey, The Longest Journey Saga continues with the release of the long-overdue conclusion to the Dreamer duology in Dreamfall Chapters. The game will be released episodically, following a similar structure and schedule to Telltale's The Walking Dead series, with new episodes every few months.

PLEASE NOTE:
Some performance issues, sometimes severe, have been reported across a wide range of systems, including those well above recommended specs. A patch has been released to try and address this, but it's impact has not been measured. Please be aware of this when deciding whether you want to buy the game.

The Longest Journey Saga takes places in twin worlds, bound together into entwined but separate entities: Stark, a world like our Earth of the future, where logic, technology, and science rule; and Arcadia, a world of magic, filled with mystical wonders and amazing creatures and races. Together, they are two halves of one whole, kept in Balance by a Guardian, who maintains the Balance between the two worlds.

In the beginning, there was one world: Earth. But the Draic Kin, four powerful beings who came to Earth thousands of years ago, saw the dangerous misuse of mankind's science and magic threatened to bring a ruinous Chaos upon the world, as it had other worlds. To prevent this, they created the Sentinels, an Order of the Balance. Composed of six scientists and six magicians, they divided the Earth into two separate worlds: Stark, to be ruled by science and technology, following Order; and Arcadia, to be ruled by magic, following Chaos. The event is known as the Divide, and a realm of the same name acts as the barrier between the new worlds; no humans may pass through it. A chosen being named the Guardian would be the protector and keeper of the Balance between the two worlds, channeling the Balance of science and magic between them. Once every thousand years, a new Guardian is chosen to take this place.

But as millenia pass, things begin to change. The scientist Sentinels of Stark begin forming the Vanguard, a faction that forgets their duties to the Balance and aims to reunite the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia into one Earth again. Their method: control the Guardian by installing their own, through taking finding children "born to the Balance" and experimenting on them. Controlling the mighty and vast Malkuth Technologies Incorporated (MTI) company and the Church of Voltec, they wield power and influence to accomplish their goals. And it's this goal of reunification that drives them, and much of the events, of The Longest Journey, as April Ryan, an art student from Stark, suddenly finds herself central to preventing the collapse of the Balance when the Guardian goes missing. This is where The Longest Journey Saga begins. And in Dreamfall, something hunts the Draic Kin, leaving only one left -- and the Balance and twin worlds vulnerable.

Stark:

Stark is like our Earth, in the future. Set on and after 2209, humanity has marched forward, growing and spreading, even outwards towards space, and colonies in and beyond the solar system. A world of industry, ruled by science and governed by logic.

The world of Stark is plunged into chaos when, as the Balance becomes increasingly unstable in The Longest Journey, a great Collapse happens following the ascent of the new Guardian. Bringing down corporations, and most technology, including those used to travel to and communicate with colonies beyond Stark, ceased to function. Following this Collapse, with Stark cut off from its colonies, Earth sets up a police agency, the EYE, to deal with the rise in crime. They also create The Wire, a network that links every electronic device on the planet together. A mysterious white noise called The Signal, however, begins interrupting The Wire, interrupting the signal of The Wire and causing increasingly catastrophic problems in the world of Stark. By the end of Dreamfall, the Signal should be gone -- but the outcome remains to be seen.

Arcadia:

Arcadia is a world that appears like our Earth, but with fantastical landscapes populated by a multitude of different races and creatures, and powered using magic and fantasy. Running in parallel to Stark, few people from Stark have ever visited. April Ryan, in The Longest Journey, finds a world on the edge of war. As populist sentiment towards unification with Stark grows, the Tyren, a group to the west of Marcuria, ally themselves with the Vanguard, pushed into a holy war, driven by a desire to conquer their long-animous neighbors in Marcuria. After the ascent of the new Guardian, and parallel to Stark's Collapse, the Tyren successfully invade Marcuria. But the Azadi, a theocratic Empire of industrialists, take the city and begin exterminating the Tyren. Banishing the Sentinels from Marcuria and outlawing the practice of magic as well as the religion of the Sentinels, they begin an occupation of Marcuria. The Resistance, a group of rebels fighting against the Azadi, is led by a disillusioned April Ryan. And Kian Alvane, an Azadi Apostle tasked by the ruling Six of Azadi to find and kill the leader of this Resistance. With forces and powers set in motion, and characters coming into conflict with one another, the future of Arcadia is uncertain at the end of Dreamfall.

Storytime:

A mysterious realm, inhabited by the Vagabond, an equally mysterious figure. Zoe ends up in the Storytime after the events of Dreamfall, and there, she meets the Vagabound. It is here that Dreamfall Chapters will begin,

This realm plays a crucial role in the universe and story of The Longest Journey Saga, but its secrets have yet to be revealed.

Zoe Castillo

The main protagonist of the Dreamfall duology. Zoe starts Dreamfall in a coma, recounting the story of how she came to be in that state. A restless, directionless woman when the game begins, she is searching for meaning when she receives a strange message in The Static: Find April Ryan. Save her. Her ex-boyfriend but longtime friend Reza Temiz. disappears while uncovering a story. Searching for him takes her across the globe, to Newport, and beyond to Arcadia. A Dreamer, she can project herself into Arcadia through her dreams -- but unlike a Shifter, cannot transport herself between worlds. Dreamfall follows her journey of finding meaning and searching for someone who matters to her, and becoming involved in bigger machinations that threaten to throw Stark and Arcadia into Chaos. Strong-willed, she does not give up in her search for Reza.

Kian Alvane

A main character and one of the three playable characters of Dreamfall, Kian is a soldier for the Akadi Empire -- the occupying force of Arcadia. An Apostle, he is sent by the Six of Akadi on a mission: travel to Arcadia and kill "The Scorpion," the leader of a resistance group that fights back against the Akadi invaders. His journey is one of realization, empathy and discovery: of questioning that which he holds to be true. He is arrested at the end of Dreamfall and is in prison in Marcuria as the story of Dreamfall Chapters begins.

April Ryan

The main character and protagonist of The Longest Journey, and a main character in Dreamfall, she is a Shifter: a person who can move between the worlds of Arcadia and Stark, and the only person known to be a Shifter at this time. Originally an art student living in Venice, Newport, she has strange dreams and visions that are dismissed until a strange man named Cortez tells her of the significance of these dreams. With his help, she begins a journey of destiny -- of fulfilling a purpose she didn't even know she had, thrust upon her unexpectedly by fate -- and coming to terms with that. Strong, smart, and quick-witted, she journeys towards her fate of importance with Crow, a new friend she meets in Arcadia. Together, they help prevent the total collapse of The Balance. By Dreamfall, she has become disillusioned and distant. She leads the rebellion against the Akadi army, and faces mortal danger. Her fate is unknown at the end of Dreamfall.

Crow

A talking crow living in the magical world of Arcadia, he is intelligent, witty, and forthcoming with quips, advice, and jokes. An accomplished sidekick, he is an invaluable companion to April during their journey together. After the events of The Longest Journey, he drifts away from April and does not see her for EIGHT. BLOODY. YEARS. A fan favorite character, it is hard not to feel crowmantic feelings for him.

The Longest Journey

The year is 2209, and April Ryan is an art student living in Venice, a neighborhood of the megacity Newport. Haunted by what she believes are strange dreams and visions, she meets a man named Cortez who alludes to knowledge of these strange dreams. With his help, she finds she has the power of a Shifter, able to move between the twin worlds at will. She winds up in the city of Marcuria, in Arcadia, and learns much from the Vestrum of the Sentinels: that a Balance separating both worlds is disintegrating after the Guardian protecting it left, and that another Guardian is needed. After meeting Brian Westhouse another person from Stark, she manages to travel back to Stark. She learns that Jacob MacAllen, a wealthy businessman, is head of the Vanguard, a group looking to reunite the twin worlds with their own Guardian. He is assisted by a Guardian candidate, Gordon Holloway, that was experimented on and split into two halves: Chaos, in Arcadia; and Logic, in Stark. She learns of a coming war in Arcadia, and travels back. There, she begins a journey to meet with different species in Arcadia, who each have a prophecy of a savior who restores and then breaks the Balance, and to get pieces of an object necessary for restoring the Balance. En route to an island, she is shipwrecked, but fulfills tasks to get more pieces of the Balance disc. She encounters The Dark People, a race obsessed with knowledge, who give her a piece and a map t the Guardian's Realm, where she must travel to in order to restore the Balance. After returning to Stark and discovering Cortez is missing, she is captured by Holloway, but freed by the mysterious Lady Alvane, who teaches her how to shift at will.

April returns to Arcadia, where she meets The White Dragon from her dreams in the beginning. She reveals she is April's mother, but dies, allowing a new White Dragon to hatch from her egg and take off. After being returned to Stark and captured by MacAllen, she is rescued by Cortez, who reveals he and MacAllen are both Draic Kin, timeless beings meant to protect Stark, but in opposition over MacAllen's plan to reunite the world's and destroy the Balance. After fighting, the two seems to die. April travels to a space station she finds is near the Guardian's Realm, and frees Adrian, the Guardian who is missing. Together, they escape Holloway to the Guardian's Realm. With the help of Crow, whom she summons, she overcomes a series of trials, and learns she is not, as she suspected, the next Guardian. She instead helps reunite the two halves of Holloway together, restoring him, and allowing him to be Guardian, as he was meant to.

In the epilogue Lady Alvane has been narrating the entire game to two children, and Crow enters, asking of the warrior princess who won the war of the Balance.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

It's been ten years since April Ryan restored the 13th Guardian to his place maintaining the Balance between the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia. Since then, upheaval has befallen Stark and Arcadia. In Arcadia, the city of Marcuria is invaded by the Tyren, and subseuqnetly, the Azadi Empire, who outlaws magic and ruthlessly stamps out religious dissent, driving the Sentinels from Marcuria. In Stark, the Collapse occurred: advanced technology enabling space travel, neural interfacing, and more was lost, and communication broke down. Colonies were cut off from Stark. A police unit named EYE formed, and maintains The Wire, a network connecting all electronic devices together. But as The Static begins causing increasingly large disruptions to The Wire, Zoe Castillo receives a message from a little girl in the middle of The Static: Find April Ryan. Save her. Her ex-boyfriend Reza, a journalist, disappears while researching a mysterious Project Alchera. Hot on his trail, she heads to Newport, and is forcibly attached to a "Dreamer" machine by agents of the WATI corporation.

This allows her to project herself into Arcadia from her sleeping body in Stark. Locating April Ryan, who refuses to help her, she awakes and travels to Japan to investigate WATI corporation. Meeting Reza's contact, she infiltrates their headquarters and interferes with Eingana, a mysterious organic interface that powers Project Alchera, allowing the ability to Dream. A confrontation with the founder of WATI corporation explains the project and its motivations, and Zoe escapes. Using a Dreamer machine, Zoe travels back into Arcadia, but is arrested by Azadi forces for witchcraft, Hearing she is imprisoned, April goes to free her, crossing paths with Kian. Not knowing each other's identities, she has a conversation with him that makes him question his mission, and the his beliefs in the Azadi. April frees Zoe, but still refuses to help her. Zoe visits a person named The White Dragon. The White Dragon sends her to a rebel camp where April is visiting.

While this is going on, Kian has been sent to Marcuria by The Six of Azadi to assassinate the leader of the Resistance, known only as "The Scorpion." Upon arriving in Marcuria and seeing the conditions of Azadi rule, he begins questioning his mission. Conflict with another Azadi officer leads to tension. A chance encounter with April Ryan, unaware of her status as rebel leader, continues to shake his moral convictions. Ultimately, he tracks down April Ryan, but expresses sympathy for her and her cause. But he betrayed by Azadi forces, who stab April, and imprison him. April falls into the water, her fate unknown.

Zoe then travels to Saint Petersburg, where The Static is originating from. There she discovers a girl named Faith, that was experimented on, but ultimately died. She transferred her consciousness into The Wire, and is the cause of The Static. Helena Chang, a contact of Reza's convinces Zoe she must use a Dreamer machine to find Faith and convince her to pass on, so that The Static, which is causing catastrophic problems, may end. Zoe agrees, and helps comfort Faith as she finally disappears. Helena places Zoe in a coma, Zoe, in a coma, identifies a watching Reza as being an imposter. Unable to wake up in Stark, she finds herself in the Storytime with the Vagabond when the game ends, her fate unknown.

Phew, OT done and up! Thanks to WonkersTHEWatilla for his help double-checking it.

I plan on fleshing out the Characters section with more minor characters, as well as adding some more to the World section, tomorrow. I'll be adding to the FAQ section as well, based on questions that get asked here and pulling from some past posts regarding the switch to episodic, physical reward fulfillment, etc.

Please leave feedback on the OT! It's my first OT, and my first ever thread on NeoGAF, so I appreciate any advice for the future. What a first thread to make, too! An exhausting, exciting privilege to make it for a series I enjoy so much. Enjoy the game everyone!

Nice! Will read through the OT later (and leave the spoiler stuff out :).
Hopefully I can find a little time today to play this.

Very nice OT. I'm now angry that I forgot to let it download before leaving for work, I should ask my girlfriend to do that for me. Speaking of, does this have any kind of local co-op?

Yeah. One of my fondest memories of all time (fuck that puzzle, lol). Ragnar is back in business and he is here to school the big guys.

Yeah I'm hoping the return of puzzles in Chapters avoids the hair-pulling frustration of that infamous TLJ puzzle. But even insane puzzles are better than barely any puzzles (ahem, Dreamfall)!

I've played about a couple hours of Book 1 and Ragnar's writing hasn't missed a beat.

Incredible OT! GAHHHH it's so freaking good. I'm feeling all warm & fuzzy.

Four hours in, slowly soaking up every little moment. The new voice actress for Zoë hits all the right notes. The writing and delivery for nearly every character is something to marvel at- there's an odd accent here and there, but the rapport, the tone, well written dialogue exchanges- it adds so much to the game. It's beautifully written thus far.

I think the puzzles are definitely simple, but it's really your dialogue choices and verbal puzzles that add so much to the experience. It's nice to feel like you're having an impact (whatever it'll turn out to be) and I find myself really navigating between the different dialogue options when it feels like there's a path there. Each different piece of this first chapter is inherently unique- the art direction is wonderful, like always. There's a ton of environmental variety.

I just want to play more, but I can't keep my eyes open! Playing on PC- i7 3770k, GTX 680 2GB and it runs hot. High/medium mix of settings and it's beautiful. Also some strange issues with the XBO controller specifically, had to replug it in several times because it stopped registering after heavy scripted moments. Ended using Kb/M, and I love the feel.

So, so good.

If you guys liked the first Dreamfall at all, you should play this as soon as possible. Red Thread knocked of out of the park.

Bought it today. I hope my PC can handle it, I have a quite weak GPU.

I'm concerned about this as well. I meet the required specs but not the recommended ones, with an AMD 6300 and a GTX 650 Ti. I guess we'll find out in seven hours or so (I assume. The unlocking time is vague).

I'm a big TLJ fan but found Dreamfall lacking in a lot of respects. Hoping for a return to former glory.

Redeemed my key through my Humble account but it doesn't show in my Steam library. :(

Edit: Just had to restart Steam and it's there now. :D

As someone who discovered this series this year and played through both games I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes. Still undecided if I should pick it up now or the PS4 release later on. Looking forward to reading impressions.

Unless this goes sharply downhill after the first half of the third chapter, Chapters absolutely lives up to my expectations. It is precisely my kind of adventure game: An interesting story, told well, great characters with dialogue and voice acting to match, lots of descriptive dialogue for all sorts of objects (make sure you look at stuff multiple times), lovely music. While much of these early chapters feels like a tutorial, the puzzles are already more interesting than anything in Dreamfall.

Red Thread worked miracles with their $1.5M Kickstarter budget and that grant from the NFI. They must must be self-funding as well. Wherever the money came from, It's all onscreen. The in-engine cutscenes are particularly impressive.

so just to get this right. the game will do a recap at the start right?

There is an option for a recap video on the main menu but it's grayed out for those of us that got to play before launch. I assume it will be there when the game goes live.

I'm glad I read the recap of the old ones because I can barely remember anything. Mines installing now. Might stream it but I'm usually awful at adventure games so it might be frustrating for people to see me fumble around lol.

I'm not gonna play this yet. I want to get the whole story in one go, as it was originally intended. Also I'm just not generally a fan of episodic delivery. Waiting a week for an episode of some show is bad enough. With games it's months.

Also I want it to be delivered in the big expensive box I paid for. This feels like it'd cheapen proceedings. It's supposed to be a whole thing, not this lil *blurp*. This might be a stupid reason, but it is a reason to me nonetheless.

FF to this time next year plz.

How many chapters do we expect?

I gotta complete the 2 first games before I start this one up. I loved Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.
