Nippon Ichi is fine! It was a mistranslation, d00ds.

That's great to hear. I've loved a lot of the titles they've created and brought to the west. Would have been a really sad day if they truly had to close shop post Disgaea 5.

Anyone ever get the strategy guides for Disgaea? Both 2 and 3 had amazing guides. Prima did D4 and it was horrible.

Really hope Disgaea 5 makes it to the West. One of the main reasons I bought a PS4 last week.

Despair over. Back to hope!

Oh, thank god. I woudn't know what to do if they went out of business.

I mean, I really want my Hundred Knight sequel.

Yeah, same. I've always been a big fan of their games. I'm really glad this ended up being a big misunderstanding. Still planning on getting Disgaea 5 on day 1 to help support them though.

And I would love a Hundred Knight sequel. Hope we at least get a vita port with an extra scenario.

Disgaea 5 is probably going to be the same thing again, but I really hope for 6 they really change it up.

They have to shake up the formula.

Unnecessary change will only turn away a lot of long time fans, especially a series niche enough to begin with. Change for the sake of change would be pointless unless it promotes positive and worthwhile growth to the series that leads to improvement.

They changed things up considerably in D2 with the Rasetsu and no longer needing collect special items to get the Land of Carnage. Also Monster Mounting replacing Magichange which fixes the issue of losing two units for the price of one. Also throwing mechanics have been fixed to instead of being just a straight line but rather in a specific ranged in any direction based on the throw stat of a character so diagonal throwing is normal mechanic and not a special trick like in previous games

Also the stronger enemy / weaken enemy bills are no longer assembly requirements and can be adjusted freely by a special NPC so that sense much of the repetition of passing pointless senate proposals is largely been toned down.

The biggest thing about Disgaea 5 however is addition of more units available on screen at once. Previous games you could only deploy 10 characters maxed. They upped this in Disgaea 5 to 100.

So instead of each battle being basically small skirmishes, it will be like mini wars if there is a hundred units all on screen at the same time.

Really, if you wanted an NIS-flavored game that isn't Disgaea, there's a whole bunch of other choices they offer.

Me, I'll be echoing the thought someone else brought up earlier: where's Makai Kingdom 2?

after reading the clarification. still sounds like they need to sell a much larger number of copies of this game than of their previous titles. They have committed to a number, what is the consequence of not hitting that number? Reasonably for what they seem to be pouring into this game how many copies would you need to ensure you get a profit?

In pr speak are they trying not to spin themselves into the ground before they even launch the game? This was also from one interview and one writing on the board at psx, so not sure how the translation from one applies to the other. Sounds like pr speak to me. But here's to wishful thinking.

I'd be up for more Soul Nomad or La Pucelle, or someting original would be good if they could do something decent, witch and guided fate 2 seem like flops

I love Disgaea, I even have the original on PS2 on my shelf.

But I honestly think it needs a change.

I already know what the healer, ninja, archer, etc artstyle will look like. It seems like the same sprites have been used over and over and over again. I know how it plays, how it starts, how you select levels, etc.

Disgaea feels like a game that is on a shoestring budget. Try to reuse as much as humanly possible, while implementing tiny changes here and there. Kinda telling when "changing things up considerably" is just not requiring an item to do something.

Thats cool that they are upping the sprite count, but its not enough for me. After 5 games, I'm burned out. (Actually, I was burned out on D2.) Hopefully they reach their 150k goal (that doesn't seem like a lot). I'll check out D6 if it gets released.

I'll do my hardest to try to have room in my budget for Disgaea 5 when they release it in Europe. Don't want to see Nippon Ichi go, even if I haven't really played many of their games in recent years.

EDIT: That is, no matter if Nippon Ichi's future depends on it or not.

Is there any reason why this series wasn't moved to the DS/PSP or 3DS/Vita to keep cost down and possible reach more people? With the main series I mean and not a spin off. I don't get why they stayed on the console and just Sony consoles? Did they not try to catch the Wii wave with an entry?

Disgaea DS bombed. It's why Disgaea 2-3-4 are Sony portable exclusive.

Though Disgaea 4 has slowdown. Which makes me wonder if Disgaea D2 will ever happen (It's the only one I care about, being a sequel to Disgaea 1/Laharl's adventures) for Sony's portable, especially since they said they had issues with porting Disgaea 4 over/the slowdown.

I think they said that after both Disgaea 4 and after Disgaea D2 were announced, prior to those games getting released. I know for certain they said it regarding D2 because they said [paraphrased] "The high-def sprites were really expensive and we might not be able to recoup the cost"

Nippon Ichi actin' like Kojima or something.

Wasn't Disgaea DS also a really bad port?

Yes, kinda... that too. They removed voices due to the DS card size limits. The game itself also added a few "touch-screen"/second screen stuff that wasn't really needed. But mechanically, it was nearly the same as the PSP verison in terms of performance AFAIK.

It did have a single fantastic feature that I was jealous of, and wish more handheld games would have: display the hour of your real time clock. No more evening sessions that quickly creep into late night gaming before you know it, which is so easy with strategy games. You don't even to clutter up your main screen on a dual screen system either.

Will still buy Disgaea 5, but I hope NISA won't screw around with the translations too much this time.

No censorship, no removed content, jp voice acting included pls...

it's funny to me that nisa's built a reputation around censoring games when the only thing they've consistently done is edit scenes in which the player touches underage girls. there's worse things than censorship in games, like scenes in video games in which the player touches underage girls.

beyond that, i don't know what removed content disgaea's had in the past, but they've all had dual audio, so that should be safe there.

Didn't they change way too much of Danganronpa and Neptunia's script? I understand cultural differences, but it IS kind of overboard.

Dual audio hype!!

Yeah well some of us don't want to live in a world where touching underage girls isn't cool.

This is sarcasm, don't ban me.

So a NISA rep posted a clarification on their forums:

Hopefully that's true.

Can't help but notice they used his correct name there. I hope this trend continues.

if it was way too much, the creators of the games wouldn't have approved the script, nor would they have allowed them to work on sequels. you will need to be more specific.

most of the changes in neptunia were changing references to japan only games to games people in the west might actually have played.

changing an Atlantis no Nazo reference to a Phantasy Star reference is hardly game ruining.

Yeah... Its NIS. NIS isn't going to say anything. NISA sells more stuff in the west than NIS in Japan anyway.

NISA's penchant for adding weird stuff into their localisations is pretty well known for people who've played the JP and eng copies. I don't even know why they do it.

I mostly close one eye and enjoy the game.
