Well buying a PS3 around launch for it was justifiable, as noboby could've guessed that the game was not going to come out at all last gen, specially when the generation before they released two games. Now, getting a PS4 for it too? Ehhhh.

But once again, until the actual product comes out, it doesn't make sense for people to buy a console when the only thing that interests them is said future title. But sure, let's excuse the PS3 purchases. At this point, I haven't seen anyone say they bought a PS4 for The Last Guardian, so I don't know whether anyone really did that. With the PS3? Sure.

I think it is a good thing...they need to start from scratch and now they did 100%
Although lets wait for an official statement.

Could they be renaming the game?

More like -> It's getting a new name/title

Seems like it.

Obviously because its being renamed

They're either renaming or they'll reapply for the mark once the game gets re-announced and they can show sufficient use/marketing spend.

I hope they're just renaming the game.

All you doubters can doubt all you want. It will make the rereveal that much more glorious.

Likely a name change and re-reveal (e.g. FFXV).

So it's getting rerevealed with a different name, okay.

I still believe.

LOL, this thread delivers! And yes guys, let it go, this game is dead. Shame on Sony that they create this stupid situation and continue complicate everything. Even if sometime game called The Last Guardian will released, it'll not survive hype over this name.

You keep posting these 'raps' yet they are not funny, and never have been.

Considering the fact that Sony has already released two games with "The Last" in it's title, The Last Guy (which no one remembers anyway lol) and The Last of Us, it actually isn't all that crazy to think that it has a new name. I know it's obvious that they aren't related but given how stupid people are out there, this may be Sony just covering itself from any potential idiots complaining or something.

Or I'm just talking complete shit and it's really dead.

Didn't Shu say that the game is still in development and that they're waiting for the right time to reintroduce it? I don't see why he would lie about that. At this point the game has seen a long hiatus without a single update, so if it wasn't still being developed, I believe Shu would have said exactly that.

With that said, it might make sense to rename the title at this point. It's not an outrageous notion. I don't see much of a reason to be pessimistic given this information, and this is coming from someone who has zero interest in the game.

I think they wanted to rename the game to avoid using "Guardian" so people doesn't get confused with Halo 5: Guardians.

I want to believe but I don't think they'd change the name with the hype they have around the game.

You gotta believe, though.

Seems like to me that they can't make up their mind whether they want to finish developing this game or not.

GamesBeat asked a lawyer. This isn't final, Sony still has a 2 month grace period to file an extension.

We asked trademark lawyer Jesse Saivar to explain what this might mean, and he broke down the process for us.

“Based solely on the history of this application, this indicates that at some point in 2012, Sony planned to create a game titled ‘The Last Guardian,'” said Saivar. “They filed what’s called an ‘intent-to-use’ application which means they weren’t using that title yet, but planned to at some point in the future”

Saivar explains that the USPTO reviewed the application and found everything was in order. The next step for the agency was to order a “Notice of Allowance” to Sony. This is a three-year registration period that is broken up into six-month chunks. Every half year, Sony has to check in with the USPTO with a “Statement of Use.” This is when Sony can either show how it is using the trademark or it can ask for an extension.

“Sony filed three such extensions to keep the application alive,” said Saivar. “However, they had another Jan. 15, 2015 deadline to file an extension and they did nothing. This indicates that, unless they blew the deadline unwittingly, they have no further intention of using that title.”

Interestingly, Kiphanie Radford, the member of Sony Computer Entertainment America’s legal team that was in charge of filing the trademark information for The Last Guardian is no longer with the company, according to her LinkedIn profile. Radford joined the legal firm Cobalt earlier this year.

Saivar goes on to note that this USPTO abandonment isn’t final. Sony has two months to tell the USPTO that it missed the deadline and ask for another extension — the company will have to pay an additional fee for not filing within the appropriate amount of time.

People who buy consoles ahead of time solely for a game that is not guaranteed to come are stupid.

I bought a PS4 for games that haven't been released yet (UC4, FF, The Order, Bloodborne, & yes TLG), who are you to judge what people spend their money on?

This is more painful than TLG being cancelled.

So not renewing trademark= dead? Urgh ok....

It's more like one of the final nails in a coffin that's been prepared and already has the body laying inside it. I wouldn't buy into a trademark not being renewed if it was for a game we actually saw anything about within the last half decade.

You this game's development has history that when I read this thread's title the first thing I
half
jokingly did out of reflex was a irl MGS3salute, and I am not even invested in this game.

How long has it been since it was announced? 8 years ago or more? And people are still clinging on that this will be released soon?

Imagine the shitstorm they'd reap if it really was cancelled some time ago, just can't believe they're that stupid and keep on blatantly lying about it. Would be a PR nightmare.

It's still being worked on.

Hmm... Who to believe.

Personally, it would be hard to fathom that they'd just give up on the game after all this time. Just put out something, who cares what it looks like at this point? The game will sell from the hype alone.

I am someone who can have an opinion? You're not the type of person I am referring to. If you have other titles you can enjoy in the meantime, then I don't see the issue. But buying a console for one future title without so much as any interest in titles presently available? That is who I am referring to.

Actually, if you bought a PS4 ONLY for those titles before they even released only for your console to collect dust (if this is what you're suggesting), then that makes little sense, in my opinion.

All I'm saying is that people are overeating over just a trademark. Why dont we all wait until Shuhei or Rhode come out and say it?

Team Ico made two of the best games ever made. So why wouldn't they hold out for this one?

Because it's obvious that the game has been vaporware for years now?

It has nothing to do with the quality of their previous games, but the fact that we haven't seen anything from this game in like 7 years.

Even if the game is doa which seems probable it probably has no relationship with the status of a trademark

For a big company like Sony getting one/renewing it is like going to the store to buy candy. Companies register all types of shit that never see the light of day.

Chances are this was just an administrative oversight.

It's also not the first time it has happened.
