The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

It's always these graphical showcase games that cause the most hysteria, like Ryse this is a game designed to show off the power of the console nothing more.

The developers themselves have said that gameplay was not a priority, so why would anyone expect a great game? The focus was on the graphics and 'cinematic' story so inevitably we get a short, basic, corridor-based shooting game.

Some of the initial impressions on the story seem lukewarm at best as well though =/

Even if they guesstimated their playtimes, do you really think they were about 4 or 3 hours off of the mark? I mean come on, pretty sure they can tell time. But I don't even know why I am discussing this, everyone's pretty much made up their mind. I'm on more of a wait and see approach.

Yeah, I could see being three or four hours off. I know that I wouldn't trust myself to accurately guess my playtime without the aid of an in-game clock if I hadn't been thinking about it ahead of time.

This game is pretty much CGI level graphics already.

I just played it on the 65" plasma at my girlfriend's and it's almost on par with one of those Assassin's Creed/The Witcher 3 trailers.

No joke. These visuals, miniscule loading times, frame rate that goes well above 30 and never dips below.

The rest of the console dev community needs to step the fuck up. RAD just elevated the shit out of the game.
Lol, I haven't even played it on my panny plasma yet; wifey's been marathoning House of Cards. Yeah, the visuals make you sit up and notice; definitely current gen's Gears of War moment where you experience graphics so far beyond what came before that it shocks you. The way everything looks so grounded; you don't see the usual "seams" that give away a video game. No ugly aliasing, no shimmering, the way light hits all the different materials. It's crazy.

Oh god, not this again.

Please stop pushing your preference as the status quo. If you don't like the gameplay fine, tons of people like cinematic games

That's all I'm going to say, I think debating you any further would be futile, as it seems you have your mind made up and have come to rain on the parade one last time.

What about the "set-pieces"? Everyone's complaining about it being a short game but if it has good gameplay set-pieces I'll play it multiple times.

I guess not, but don't you think after all this controversy came out they were paying attention to it. If I get this game early I'll keep a stopwatch handy just for all of you, but then again you guys probably won't believe me either way.

Just to reiterate I believe the 5.5 hours thing, but I also believe that it took the other gaffers longer than that, that's all.

He's right though. Doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Ryse looked great, and personally I really liked it, but that's not to say it wasn't a showcase to sell/show off the system, The order is the same thing, a bit LTTP, but still the same thing. No need to get the arse.

Not every dev has the money or time Sony have given RAD and for most devs including RAD that time would be better used making more content than polishing what they do have to a sheen.

I agree that its a graphical showcase, I disagree that its a bad game because of it.

I take issue when being cinematic is automatically equatable to being bad.

At least, the polishing time erases all bugs.
This times a lot of games have been launched barely unplayable.

Well, time to lay back with the popcorn. This is gonna be one long movie.

Awesome... Is it a well spent, 3 hour long movie or a 1 hour & 45 minutes rip off?

Await your impressions. ;)

Dude, Ryse was getting 3/10 all over the shop, i liked it and that's all that matters to me. A wise man said don't believe something until you see it with your own eyes (or in this case play it with your own hands.. errr and eyes.. i guess..) A whole bunch of guys at my work think the big Lebowski is shit... go figure..

Sounds like you are a big EA and Ubisoft fan.

First french news paper "official" review from JeuxVideo magazine.
ed6260d5681c279171f03bf06cd4d28420150217110859.jpg

Translation :

Gameplay :
Very simple but efficient action scenes, a large amount of QTE and some poor sneaking levels.

Graphics :
Top notch textures, mind blowing effects and no transition between game and cinematics. Awesome.

Sound :
Really good ambiant score, good dialogs, and good feedback from the weapons.

Duration :
Almost 7 hours, without running, which is a bit short (knowing that cinematics is half the duration..).

Global :
A lovely object, between a movie and a game. Some can considers it half-win or half-fail, it is the way you love Videogames that will be decisive.

So 7 hours, without speeding through and half of that is movies. This from an official review.

But i guess they didnt soak enough atmosphere, so that review is clearly biased....

Are they sure they weren't speed-running it?

I'm French. "half of that is movies" but you don't know if qte are movies for the review.

Ricky_r : I cannot, I have not anymore the newspaper in my hands. But as far as i know, we will have a bunch of reviews in 4 ou 5 hours (end of the day, french-time).

i have been posting it will probably be 7 hours for most, since I looked at the trophies popping. Looks like its on the money.

it will probably be more for gaffers because we like to look at the details even the non interactive ones. That explains the posted impressions that it was 8 or 9 hours.

Yeah so the haters were banging on about 3 then 5 now 7, if it was 12 or 15 they would sub in black bars or qte or something else for their main complaint.

Seven seems pretty short still. Anyways, length doesn't really bother me, its more the impressions that say it isn't anything special.

The review call the order "un bien bel objet". It's a compliment. If you like the order or not it's your vision of video games. What do you expect?
And it seems honest.

I've seen a lot of review for heavy rain said that was a movie. (go eye the review by gamekult.fr)

Unless its from the same guy doing this review, im not sure whats your point.

Thing is, it doesnt matter if QTE's are movies or not, if half of those 7 hours are made up of QTE's and movies, then 3.5 hours of actual cover based shooting and exploring is quite low.

If you think qte isn't game, so it's short. If you think you're playing during a qte it's honest.

Like the reviewer said, you're point of view for the order will depend of your video games vision.

I'll tell you a terrible secret: all Telltale games are 80% QTE and cutscenes. Even shooting is QTE in them. How can they still exist? Abomination!

Telltale games dont sell for 70 euros... i bet people would be screaming bloody murder if they did.

In the end you get 7 hours of content (referring to the review, or more or less hours according to gaf members and the YouTube playthrough).

If these hours are enough to justify your purchase of 60$ is up to you.

The game is still what it was advertised as: a product which tries to blend cinematics and gameplay.

Like the reviewer set whether you like this game or not will depend on what you expect in a video game.

If it takes around 7 hours for me thats fine, because that's what most TPS games have took me and I don't mind watching a few more cutscenes. (This is just my opinion obviously).
