Yup, Ketsui gives you more continues the more you play, as was the case in the GCN port of Ikaruga and other shmups. Personally I stopped credit-feeding these games a long time ago, you get to enjoy them much more that way, getting better and milking that credit as far as possible; maybe I´ll do it once to see all the stages and that´s it.

What do I need to do to unlock infinite continues in Ketsui? I don't like getting far and starting over. Just feels like a waste of time...

Is the save file protected? If not, download one off the internet with unlimited credits unlocked, save it to a USB drive and copy it to your PS3.

I still use bolt + rivet and can never get the stream on the popcorn enemies at the end of s1 and I think thats cause of the ship I choose. Still have yet to hit 20mil (highest is 17) but I've read that it's much easier when you unlock the loop.

Hmm, gave this combo a little bit of practice yesterday, not an easy one. I forgot how much slower it takes Rivet to ignite gems. But I was able to pull the stream at the end of stage one. Are you possibly not maxing the rank out by the end of the stage? As in the popcorn enemies returning a solid stream of bullets (like you see in my videos) when they turn around?

Basically, you want to start the stream on the line of tanks when they get to the bottom left side of the screen, then start tapping forward quickly with the stick to keep the stream going. Making constant small movement is really the trick with pulling gem streams.

I'd even suggest switching to Nail if you feel up for it, she's the best pair with Bolt and she can ignite gems much quicker than Rivet can going by my play yesterday. Plus, she moves faster which is not as jarring as the speed decrease that you get with Rivet, especially using Bolt.

With the final section of stage 3's boss, if you can't point blank him it like I do in my video's, try the strategy I use in my 72 mil run. It was the first way I found to successfully beat that pattern. There's actually a third way to tackle that pattern, and it's what I use on 2-3 in my near-ALL playthrough, which is basically staying to the left side and just moving up and down in the pattern. You can perform this technique on the first loop as well!

The rest of the sections just require a little practice, like the intro to stage 5. The midboss on that stage can get point blanked to death easily, wish that same strat worked on the second loop...

Played some this weekend in between garegga and only got 15mil s5 boss phase 3. Lost 3 full bomb stocks on it. Not maxin stage 1.

I just realised that I have a spare CRT TV that I can use to play my Cave shmups on, TATE-style.

How safe is it to leave the monstrosity lying on its side? Is there anything I should know before attempting this?

Just make sure you plug it in while its on its side. If the colors are off leave it unplugged for a bit then try again.

If the case looks like it'll support the TV's weight on the side, go for it. Generally, you'll want to make sure the TV has been off for at least a day or two before you try to change its orientation, or you'll end up with some psychedelic colors.

Cool, thanks guys. I think it should be ok to turn it then. Case looks sturdy, and it hasn't been switched on for... well, months. Should make a mental note to unplug it too. Seems common sense but I just know it's the sort of thing I'll forget until the last minute!

Don't forget to confirm which direction you should turn it onto before you actually do the deed. IIRC you turn counter-clockwise so the bottom of the set should face the right, but I'm not completely sure.

This is important. Not every game supports both rotations. I think left side down is more common.

Not actually that important
ALERT!!!!

The Pythetron kickstarter has not gotten enough love so far and only 3 days are left. What is presented already looks very compelling from both gameplay and graphics. Please check out the trailer and consider if you want this game in your future.

WOW!

I can't believe this is gonna fail -_-

Only 3 days left and it's $4000+ short, 1% chance to succeed... and yet people always clamor for proper 2D horizontal NON-bullethell shmups, damn it looks good

Sent you a reply buddy!

Tate mode by rotating the display onto it's left side is the most common, some older ports might do both (or in some rare instances on the right side), but it's typically left side. Once you have a vert-only monitor it's impossible to go back. :)

Good to know. Last time I TATE'd my PC CRT to play some JP360 shmups, it had those psychedelic colors. I immediately turned it off and left it right side up. Was afraid I would mess the thing up otherwise. ^_^;

If you're using a PC CRT just degauss it. The advice to not move it while turned on mostly applies to TVs, which lack a degauss function.

Got my copy of Akai Katana Shin...it's all but destroyed. Shattered case, disk makes horrible noises in the drive, I took it out after the first level. Hoping ebay refund isn't too painful.

Any point in grabbing Mushihimesama Futari NOT 1.5 or Daifukkatsu black label if I have 1.5 and non-black label? I think those two, DaiOuJou and Akai Katana (again) are all I'm missing of the 360 games. Even have the LEs of Deathsmiles 2, Ketsui and Espgaluda 2.

thanks man. I'm definitely not rich haha. gonna be selling some of my boards to make up for the sizeable dent it left on my credit card. couldn't pass up my (probably) only chance to afford/nab a pcb version of futari bl.

played a bit last night and had a 310mil original run which I'm going to need to work on.

Hey all! I don't post on here all too much; however, its good to see fellow shoot em up fans out there. Figured I would take a pic of the games I currently have.

(Well for the more current stuff anyway as I would have go through boxes to dig up the older era stuff (PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, etc)

Ordered Shooting Love 200x and should be here soon. Hopefully down the line I'll purchase some PCBs; however, it isn't a "must-have" for me. Still would be sweet to dabble in though

The beta version of Futari isn't worth it, 1.5 is the definitive version. Daifukkatsu Black Label is totally worth it, I like it much more than the main game. Yagawa worked on it and it shows. Tighter pacing, compared to vanilla DFK, and a great use of rank (unlike Garegga, you want to keep your rank to the max as long as possible).

are the digital versions of the games on the jp store ip locked? i have a j360 so i don't need to worry about region locking

if they are i guess i'll just buy the disc versions, don't feel like fooling with a vpn. kinda feel like playing dfk again.

Is Cave still in bad shape financially? I don't understand why they don't just release their stuff on PS3/PS4/Vita. They could make so much money, I would buy everything (esp. on Vita).

Currently my only way to play Cave games is my iPhone/iPad, and I'm very disappointed that they stopped being active on that platform. No more releases, no more sales and only very seldomly a bug fix.

I tried that F2P iOS thing they just put out. It was alright. It didn't seem to nasty about monetization from what I played. There are a bunch of gems and shit to spend on filling up bars, but I never hit the point where it wanted real money for something. The actual shooting part was fine. Nothing we haven't seen before, but it did have some interesting chain and elemental stuff going on. I don't think I'll be putting any serious time into it, but if it ever gets translated I'd check it out again.

Personally I'd be happy if they released their games on PS3 - but just look at the Ketsui PS3 port, which catastrophically bombed. It sucks but I don't think that's something we can (or should) expect them to do.

YOU would buy everything and so would I, but we are in the minority by far. These games look like nothing more than cheap, mobile distractions to a lot of people.

However the cost of releasing these games digitally on PSN is low. And if they sold them at $30 digital, they would make the same profit as of $60 physical releases, while reaching a much larger audience.

Cave is just bad at business and stuck in the past, much more so than even Nintendo (just my personal opinion, not a fact).

it doesn't work like that. the audience for these games is small — people who aren't already interested in this genre (and those people, like most of this thread, are perfectly fine with buying these games as full price imports) aren't really going to pay money for these games, or at least if they are it's going to be a novelty purchase for like $3. look at the absolutely embarrassing reception that an amazing game like crimzon clover world ignition got in the steam thread, for example. while not a cave game, you can get an idea for how these games would actually be received by a larger audience.

I don't see what new audience Cave would be reaching by porting their games to PS consoles. Everyone who cares about Cave shmups is already fanatical enough to import them almost regardless of cost and the entire shmup audience in Japan is on 360 - just look at how poorly the localized 360 Cave games and Ketsui PS3 did!

And if Cave isn't reaching a new audience with PS ports, what's the point of spending money porting the games at all?

The only port I could see making any sense would be porting to PC - but Japanese companies rarely develop/port to PC so that's a long shot, and I still doubt if PC ports would perform well enough to justify costs.

New addition to the family. Found this CRT on the side of the road today, has component and S-Video so I knew I had to snatch it as my other CRT is only a 13 inch one. Espgaluda looks great on it.

Yep. 'Luda is a definite 240p showpiece game. Based Arika.

I think it's probably the prettiest shmup of them all. The colors, effects, 240p. It's just a glorious game. The only thing I'm not super thrilled on is the soundtrack. The boss music is great but all the other tracks don't do much for me. Still easily one of my favorite shmups if not my favorite. Mushihimesama Futari is a close second.

That's surprising to hear. I can't get enough of Espgaluda's soundtrack; it's probably one of my favorites overall. The only thing better in shmups is Ketsui's boss theme.

Guys I did it, I ended up buying the Progear PCB on ebay. I have no way to play it at the moment but a buddy of mine has a supergun so I'll be surely bringing it to his place eventually to play it. Either way owning a piece of Cave/Capcom history is worth it to me.

congrats brother! progear is the main reason I got into PCB collecting even though I snagged dimahoo first (since it was loads cheaper :p).

did you nab a phoenixed version or one w/ a working battery? did it come with the CPS2 "A" (motherboard) Board too? anyway you look at it, Progear is the best!

I sent the seller a message asking if it was phoenixed or if the battery was replaced recently as it wasn't mentioned. The listing just said that it was fully working. It comes with the motherboard too but is that inside the PCB case because I didn't see a separate board? All that was pictured was that and the original artwork.

The cps2 B board is the game, and the best way to think of it... is as a 'cartridge'. The motherboard is basically the 'console' and you just shove the cartridge down onto the mobo and plug it in via the jamma edge on the mobo.

It's 20x easier than it sounds and it will prob ship pre-connected so all you'll have to do is plug it in.

Thats what the A (motherboard) board looks like. Going forward if you wanted any cps2 games (like dimahoo, mars matrix, etc...) you can buy just the B board and swap the games when you want.

is dfk 1.51 worth the extra 1700 yen or so it'd cost to get the LE over the platinum collection ver

or is the LE any good? like the soundtrack and stuff

I believe you can nab dfk 1.51 for a couple dollars on XBL marketplace, but imo the best part of the entire package is the arrange mode that Yagawa worked on which is exclusive to the disc-based J360 version. If you have a J360 I'd suggest grabbing the disc-based version.

any LE I've ever owned (for cave that's only DFK and Mushihimesama HD) hasn't been worth the money tbh. It's nice for the different art/box, but kinda worthless if you're not a collector. They usually come with a soundtrack cd that I never open, and the DLC code.
