I wasn't sure how much more detail you'd have been able to add to the original 2D sprites used for the hedge maze, but somehow you managed an incredible amount of verisimilitude, given the context. The rest is as impressive as ever, especially the stone carving and embossed metal on the door.

Great work. The geometry on these pillars and the balcony look a bit off, though. Maybe it's the textures or the lack of any shadows, I'm not sure, but it looks rather flat. No offense, though. You guys are doing transcendent work on this project.

Probably because it IS flat :)
Honestly, I think this is just a textured plane, no further geometry involved.

Holy fuck at those leaves. I am also always amazed when you guys are able to track down the real paintings those blurry images are based on.

This is one of the few, if not the first, shots that seems a little off. The perspective on the statue should be top down, but we're seeing it as if from below. Maybe it's just because of the position of the camera... it may not look as odd from Leon's height.

But that hedge
. Are those leaves the actual source of the original texture, or just a very close match?

It says HD recreation, which means they're creating it themselves. I think if its from the original source it'll say HD restoration

Today some updates from Albert from the Salazar robot room (work in progress).

One thing you'll notice are updated reflections in the water. More shots and details / commenary at the site (re4hd.com)

Enjoy!

How did you do the reflections? Do you guys have some method of just "render the game world again but upside down" for the reflection? That comparison is seriously like someone took the reflections graphics slider from all the way left to all the way right.

I said it already, I'll tell it again : you're doing a wonderful work. I can't wait to play with your superior remaster.

Basically duplicated the applicable parts / 3D models of the room upside down beneath the water. :)

Just bought RE4 since Resident Evil is the daily deal for today! Where can I download the mod? I'm downloading from RE4hd but man it's so slow. The mega link is dead.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll get that corrected shortly and will follow up here. Sorry for the trouble - I hope the other download link worked out (though more slowly).

Another update! This time from the Salazar tower and the battle area where you fight him. A few more shots and a demo video are up at the site (re4hd.com)

Enjoy!

Looks fantastic!

In a related topic, what kind of modern graphical effects have people been able to add to RE4? SSAO, post-process via reshade? Anything particularly cool?

Good gravy gentlemen! Haven't popped into this thread since the very beginning when I was marveling over the texturing on the leather jacket LMAO. Absolutely insane work. Just... insane. I can't get over how incredible the HD assets are! The amount of work poured into this is just tremendous. You guys are saints!

I'm sure once it's completed it will truly take off. It'll probably be the next DSFix in terms of being seen as mandatory.

It would be great if another talented artist helped out on it. They could start at the beginning of the game and work their way back until both sides meet in the middle. :D

But man. This mod is insane. Do want.

Wait I don't get it.

I never realized how ugly the original game was ? It sure as hell never felt that ugly ...

Impressive job though ! Would that work with the HD rerelease ?

You likely played on a CRT, from further away. So smaller screen + blur. Even if not on a CRT, having a smaller screen helps make things seem a lot nicer visually. On top of that, most of these textures are noticeably bad when you get up and look at em, but from a distance, in your periphery while you're running through it's not as immediately noticeable.

Well...

Some (most?) textures in the game are really low-res and blurry. However, when you were playing the game you probably understood that you are playing a 9-year-old game originally released on GameCube so your mind ignored those textures, excused its existence. Also, the art design, lighting and character models are still great and it's a fast-paced action game, so it's easy to not look at the textures (unless it's in a cut-scene where you have a shot of a character talking and the background visible for several seconds is one ugly gray smeared wall texture).

I'm pretty sure everyone thought RE4 looked incredible at time of release. I mean, I sure as hell did. It's kinda crazy what continually changing standards do to older games. I look back now and I'm not sure how I ever could have tolerated the muddy visuals and aliasing lol

Remember we are looking at these screenshots at high resolutions. When I originally played RE4 on the GC, it was on a CRT and it looked mind blowingly good. The best looking game I've ever played up to that point.

RE4 was the best looking game during it's time. I remember when they lifted the embargo, on the top secret press demo where they first showed the village stage and the whole world went wild. Nobody was expecting RE4 to be as good as it was.

Anyway this HD update is really fantastic work.
