Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Some people did, at least that's what they think lol.

Greg Miller played for over 54 hours and got overall completion 49%.

So i highly doubt any of the reviewers got to 100% yet, maybe something happens then? would be a very Kojima thing to do something but nobody knows for sure.

If 100% is a Ground Zeroes 100% the percentage is meaningless.

People are saying that a "Kojima moment" is missing from the game's story, at the same time I read that the opening is something really amazing. I'm kind confused by this reviews, because it seens the opening is very Kojima.

Yes, I'm using Kojima as an adjective.

I think going in with the thinking that this is going to be some epic finale for the franchise, or is the swansong of the franchise, is going to lead to disappointment. It's not really that game. That was MGS4, for better or for worse. The story in this game isn't necessarily bad, and I'll certainly take it over the character assassination of Solid Snake present in MGS4 (one of the main reasons why I hate that particular game), but it's not like there's a whole lot here. The truth is, all of this extra content detailing the exact nature of Big Boss's journey is superfluous.

I feel MGS3 alone was good enough, and it would've been great to just have that. It's nice to leave things to the imagination sometimes, and I feel this whole journey is a testament to that. MGSV's story kind of feels unfinished if someone tries to take it as some kind of conclusion, because it's not. Not necessarily in the sense that there's a lot more to tell, but just that it's not a conclusion to the saga. And it's not necessarily a good way to bring things full circle since it doesn't really do that in some great way either.

Basically, it's a story in the life of Big Boss. That's about it. It really doesn't do anything thematically important for Big Boss's journey nor does it provide some greater understanding of his character that we didn't already have. So superfluous I feel is the best way to describe it. That doesn't mean it's bad, but in a game which is probably 2-3 times longer than the previous main entry, there really isn't that much there, and the crappy pacing kind of hinders it in that sense.

I think MGS5 is a game that gets a lot right, and a lot wrong. And how much you like it is going to depend on the type of design you like in games, and what made you a fan of the franchise. It really does kind of jump to the other end of the spectrum in comparison to MGS4.

With MGS4, I feel if there had been a better balance in the game design, it really could've been something special (even though I hated that story). With MGS5, I don't really think that way. I don't dislike it more than MGS4, but MGS4's disappointment for me was because it really could've become something far greater than what it was. Even if you were to rectify some of the issues I have with MGS5, I don't think it could become that, since you'd have to pretty much overhaul it. Then you basically have a different game.

Plus, I was kind of blindsided by the length of this game. I really didn't expect that. That's a backfire of a blackout I guess. Although I likely would've enjoyed it far more if the pacing wasn't the way it was. It does get very repetitive.

Still, though. Seven years for this. Kind of sucks really to feel this way.
tks man...my dream battle and conversation sadly wont be in. Guess what I really want is a next Gen Zanzibar and Outer Haven game aka Metal Gear 1&2 remake. But at least with my expectations in check I think ill enjoy it more now instead of being disappointed, this posts helped a ton, I definitely would have been salty going in blind and completing it on my own. Tks for all the impressions man.

Woah what do you mean character assassination of Solid snake in MGS4. MGS4 is his best moment and it shows he is the hero all other characters only wish he could be. The entire game is about snake basically being tortured in every way a man could be tortured but because he is the greatest soldier, because he is the ultimate hero he still puts the fate of the world on his shoulders. He does it not for country or control but because of love of his friends and to do what is right. He represents everything The Boss actually wanted to represent.

MGS4 is snakes shining moment.
nonsense. This might have been what Kojima wanted to convey, but snakes demeanor, inability to figure out anything gor himself, and as pointed out reliance on others to give his own life meaning ruined his character. I think Solid is everything Big Boss wanted to be, but there's a reason why so many had issues with him in mgs4, and it wasn't because he was old lol.

Yup. Old Snake is by far the best incarnation of Snake.
disagree, it is by far the weakest. Compare snakes end speeches with meryll or Raiden to his in MGS4, its almost not the same character anymore. Remember when Snake killed Sniper wolf? That speech about wolves vs. Dogs? That's Snake. Not some old guy who can't pull the trigger and runs around almost clueless.

I will say that open-world games evolving beyond the '100s of shitty mini-objectives on a map with a tepid main mission thrown in anchored to middling game mechanics' is a pretty cool development in gaming 2015. Not every game needs the variety of things to do as GTA, and we certainly don't need any more 'UbiWorld' games. Gonna give Shadow of the Collosus credit for being the first to break the mold, way back when, lol.

100%. A couple of games have really improved on the mould, this year. TPP looks like one of the biggest improvements to the open world formula in a long time.

Dat Gamespot 10/10.

2015 is pretty much the YOAT right now.

I don't really care about review scores, but yep, YOAT is definitely how I feel about 2015. It's realised most of my all-time gaming fantasies. Reckon I'll make a thread about it in due course.

Does anyone know if ther are still Harry Gregson Williams pieces in Phantom Pain?
Or is the OST completely new?

A mix - IIRC it's him, one other key producer, and a contributor.

From the Gamespot review

"When it comes to storytelling, there has never been a Metal Gear game that's so consistent in tone, daring in subject matter, and so captivating in presentation. The Phantom Pain may be a contender for one of the best action games ever made, but is undoubtedly the best Metal Gear game there is."

Just for people who think there is no story.

Just for people who think there is no story.

most complaints from people in here who haven't played the game is that there isn't enough story in the game they haven't played yet and, thus, the game they haven't played yet has been ruined by the lack of story they haven't witnessed yet

Yes, I'm using Kojima as an adjective.

When your name is used as a noun, verb, and adjective that's how you know you've made it. lol

Even judging by the story/gameplay trailers released thus far, i think it's still in there. Im starting to think this time constrained review event nonsense might be hiding something. There's got to be something when you 100% it lol

Also impressed the presumptive game of the year (perhaps even game of the generation) runs at 60 frames per second.

Your move, cinematic obsessed Western developers.
Yea agreed. I was shocked when I played Ground zeroes and it looked incredible.... And ran at 60 fps the whole time

Hah. This is great. Love Dan, but it's crazy how little he knew about some stuff.

I'm so glad people found that as funny as I did. I was almost yelling at my screen when he kept saying that's not Miller.

I don't think anyone is saying there's no story, you're exaggerating that quite a bit. People, myself included, are just worried about how much of a presence it has in traditional MGS terms or how much of a focus it is in general.

Spot on.

I'm not worried at all knowing Kojima.

From what I've seen/read, I don't think it's a case of sparse story at all, more like sparse story in comparison to other MGS games. And other MGS games have been known to rattle on for hours, to the point where they're about 50% radio show (I'm not knocking that, part of the reason why I fell in love with the series). I think critics are trying to convey that it feels surprisingly relatively sparse, when in actual fact there's probably more than enough in there.

Great reviews. I expected MGSV to be the best-reviewed new game this year, and so far that seems to be the case. The entire mainline MGS series has gotten exceptional reviews...these types of games just resonate more with reviewers than games like Bloodborne and TW3. I also don't see any other upcoming 2015 game reviewing better...Fallout 4 will come close and may be the 2nd-best reviewed new game of the year.

There's been many great games this year, with more likely still to come (FO4, Persona 5)...but I think MGSV will dominate 2015's GOTY awards by a pretty wide margin. Both in the media and on here. There's excellent games (we get at least a few of those every year), and then there's your rare, really special phenomenal game that comes along once every few years.

don't be obtuse. We are going off the members on GAF impressions who have/are playing the game. There's like 5 pages of the codec vs. Cassettes debate. MGS is always going to be a polarizing game, but its disingenuous to say everyone is just commenting off of emotion alone.

I apologize if this has been asked 200 times, I followed best I could. I assume this was the PS4 version reviewed? Any information (Not graphical comparisons) on the Xbox One version?

If you think about it, it's no different from the shrapnel horn in terms of symbolism abuse. Actually I'm not sure if it's intentionally campy or not. Maybe he thinks that stuff is brilliant.

PS4 was the only one given to reviewers to play at said events.

What could be worse than getting paid to play MGS for 4 days? The horror, the horror.

Totally man, I mean, my dream first-time experience with MGSV: TPP is to experience the 80-100 hour game crammed into four 8-hour slots, 32 hours gameplay total, with PR guys standing by my shoulder saying, 'Skip the intro. Don't mention this plot point. You can't talk about the ending,' in a place I don't know with systems I don't know, and with a sheet in front of me mentioning even more stuff I'm not allowed to talk about.

Like, perfect, dream game-playing scenario right there. You're 100% right.

Does anyone know if you're able to play the game whilst listening to the cassettes or do you need to sit idle in a menu screen?

It is the same game @ 900p.

Not a big deal.

I'm sure it will run at solid 60fps.

I've spoken to somebody who was at the event - it was nowhere near as bad as you're making out and, believe it or not, they actually enjoyed the event and the game. I was probably a bit rash with my last post though, admittedly.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
INCREDIBLE!

This is going to be the best reviewed game of the year, isn't it? I bet Metacritic ends up 95 or higher :*) 2015 has been such a flop year, with nothing truly outstanding being released on consoles so it's nice to see MGSV is living up to the (and my) hype :)

Looking forward to MGSV raking in all the GOTY awards as well.

No bald cap? Lies!
What's the best course of action if I'm going into this without playing any metal gear games? Maybe not worth it at all?

YouTube movie cuts of MGS3 and Peace Walker and then MGS 1, 2 and 4 if you have time. Play Ground Zeroes if you have it or at least watch YouTube cuts of it as well.

i never said it came from an emotional place, just that it came from an ignorant place given that the majority of those whining about it haven't played a second of it yet.

Thanks for posting this. Glad I told Konami's local PR that their terms and conditions for me to have a review out day and date were a no show. I knew it would be rubbish but I didn't know it would be *this* bad.

Is it worth going back and playing the old ones? I played Ground Zeroes when it hit Plus and liked it a lot, and I have Peace Walker downloaded to my Vita to play through when I finish Symphony of the Night. Other than that, I have next to no experience with a Metal Gear game, aside from hearing about the series from Greg Miller over the years.

Man, if you thought 2015 has been a flop year for video games, you must have really hated 2014.

I would also say that the person you talk to probably wishes to stay off the Konami shit list so maybe is only relaying positive information toward you,

Because they probably signed some papers in regards to how it was conducted ect ect.
