Man, Sharapova is so fine. Just shop those other cats out of there, crop the image, make her stand on a grate, blow the skirt up from underneath, bit of a cheeky pout, job done.

Not that I would kick Maria out of bed but I've always preferred Serena in terms of looks.

better?

wait, she's still second from the left. Can't even make front and center. We're doomed. The whole world is doomed.

All you people bashing the OP are racist, HEAVEN HELP US.

In all serious, facepalm to the extreme to this thread. Everything is racist nowadays to the whiners and people who twist everything into fitting their agenda.

Relax, they rotated few times for different shots. This is the fine example of the outrage culture in full swing and creating controversy where there is none.

I swear, Gaf sometimes looks like a caricature of this way of thought.

Nike themselves are using the posted shot as their main advertisement shot since it's a recreation.

You always take more than one photo during a photoshoot.

Absolutely sickening. Just look at the people in the back right, being forced to wear WHITE clothes.

I can't believe this is happening in 1997.

of course it's racist and sexist
male players are ranked by success, female players are ranked by what society considers beautiful, that's why federer sits up front and the black female no.1 in the back

I dont know if you're joking, but I agree with you.

Neogaf, I see a LOT of threads about racism on this site. It's become apparent now, at least to me, that people are projecting their own insecurities.

Of course there is racism and it should be dealt with and exposed. But some of you need stop attaching your own anger and frustration on to every little thing. Stop immediately presuming racism.

She belongs there more than Dimitrov, Keys and Kyrios. She has more slam finals and even more slam semifinals than all of them combined.
She still has no relevance compared to Raffa, Sampras, Agassi, Federer, John fucking McNroe and so on

She had one good year and then faded into irrelevancy

There are multiple posts explaining this.

Everyone calm down.

I don't know, she's still on the back out of the focus on all the shots while the lesser blonde is always front and center.
Seems pretty much

this.

What's racist and sexist? The moment in time? The photographer? Getty Images for choosing just that one photo out of many? Other people for reading too much into a single photo in time?

Seeing everything through race card glasses.

I see Nike trying to get reps from several countries. Male and female. Current and past stars. It's a pretty diverse crowd. They're trying to sell product, not just sign the current top ten.

Op may have a point. Serena will be up for breaking a record at the US open, right? She is the past, present and future of women's tennis. She's there only reason I'm watching in a few weeks.

How many tennis players have had an opportunity to clear 22 grand slam finals? Of course, this will be lost under the explanations that come: someone else picked it, the viewers really don't connect with her, we put another black person in the front, why do you have to make everything about race, I just don't see it, etc.

It may not be racism but what the hell is it for one of the faces of tennis?

when I wrote my original comment I did not know the players were rotating. of course that changes a lot.
however, this picture perfectly shows a lot of what is wrong with how race and gender in sports (or generally) is perceived in society.
if this is just one of 100 shots and it was somewhere in a box, my comment is obviously obsolete, if this was somehow arranged or specifically picked from those 100 picuters to be in or on a magazine, my point still stands.

Or maybe Serena wasn't feeling photogenic that day? My goodness with all these conspiracy theories.

Fair enough, although the knee-jerk reactions to everything without context around here gets out of hand.

Serena already gave the best answer about this issue. Way better than what anyone has said about it

She was asked about Sharapova being more "marketable" than her even though she has the more successful carreer.
