Come on dude, what does that even mean?

Means they all looked hispterish/esque and just seemed artificial, idk just didn't resonate, the opening theme is on point though...

Maybe it'll get better, the final bit with all the guests was good.

It's no accident or aside that they're going out of their way to set up a cordial relationship between the two hosts. It's a clear attempt to distinguish them from their predecessors in that regard.

Kinda lame. Like hokahay said up there this show feels to day time in parts. The moaning Lovecraftian head? Okay. The super happy band and being buds with Fallon? Meh. I like my late-night shows with some edge. Conan is good at that. I still like Colbert and this show has potential. His 'normal' personality works well.

I also wish he talked less during his interviews. That Bush interview was edited to hell to allot for timing. He needs to watch more tape of Dave. Ask a question and then be quiet.

Colbert has never operated this way. He was quiet tonight relative to how he was on his old show. It's just not his style.

Is there something wrong with friendly competition? Sounds like you'd rather see Fallon/Colbert go at it with swords and axes. I love the friendship as it provides a new playing field.

I'd say the biggest problem with the first show was it felt overstuffed. Nothing really had time to breathe except the Clooney interview even though they went long. Looking forward to watching the whole Jeb interview as that was a highlight. Would like to hear a bit more than 2-3 seconds of Jon Batiste/Stay Human before they cut it off. Crowd probably didn't help by cheering so much.

The opening monologue wasn't bad, but it's not up to the level as the segments behind the desk.

Still very good for a debut, although not as great as the Colbert Report premiere. Trump/Oreo segment was brilliant.

Felt like there were more commercials than Letterman's show, but maybe that's just because they went 10 min longer.

Looking forward to show #2... things should be a little more smooth then.

I'm glad he seems to be retaining the corporate shilling! No more Bud Light Lime I'm going to assume, sadly.

Will wait and see how he manages monologues with more pop culture stuff. I mean, I'm sure he can do it, but not sure I'll care for it. His hands are somewhat tied here.

Easily fills an hour. Really does not need a band.

The number and length of commercial breaks is ridiculous. Think i'll just stick to watching archives online from now on.

Otherwise great show.

It had commercials in the same places as every other show in the format.

I went back and checked, and aside from a brief shot of the Colbert audience with a message about how to get tickets, the commercial break between Clooney and Jeb was eight minutes long. That's ridiculous.

Welcome to late night shows. It didn't feel much different than Letterman in that regard.

Colbert is getting paid the least out of the late night hosts and he is his own announcer.

He's the spiritual successor to Craig Furgeson.

I guess. Late Nite hosts putting each other over with cute gags and light cameos doesn't really do it for me. I don't think it'd hurt Colbert or Fallon to not acknowledge each other.

The Super Bowl has adverts too.

I don't see how anyone notices. You don't have a smartphone to dick around with while that's happening? I never watch commercials.

He isn't wrong, just doesn't understand why he is right. The show went an extra few more minutes specifically for ad time. It's one of the biggest television events of the year, of course there is going to be more ads. That's how this works!

No he's not, but Letterman usually had a super long commercial around the same time of night so I can't say I really noticed it.

You're right, it wouldn't hurt, but them being civil and cooperative to each other opens up the door for all sorts of creative possibilities.

Id prefer the latter over the former.

My point is that people saying "holy shit this is a lot of commercials" aren't wrong. I haven't watched the late night talk shows since Conan had his stint on The Tonight Show. Maybe this is normal, but it's also a fuckton of commercials, and that's jarring for people coming from The Colbert Report.

Please tell me this is your impression of what a hipster sounds like and how they critique music.

They've been friends and appearing on each other's shows for a while...

Comedy Central is notorious for being a commercial machine. They just have less opportunities to sell adverts at anywhere near the cost of an over the air network.

Oh, I know. I'm getting a lot of resistance to what I assumed was something everyone would be on board with in saying that an eight minute commercial break qualifies as a lot of commercials.

That's just the format, at that point in the night there's usually a big commercial break.

It just isn't a big deal to me in 2015. I gave a phone and tablet right beside me. In 1996, I hated commercials.

I agree with this. Colbert presence still has a heavily ironic edge to it that I'm unsure lends itself well to laid back interviews (although I feel like he wanted to have a sincere conversation with Jeb -- who for most of the interview seemed ill at ease). It had an almost suffocating variety show feel at times. I'm not expecting Dick Cavett level interviews here, but the commercials wrecked the flow and made a lot of the segments feel truncated. I miss the John Oliver model, because those advertisements were awkward.

The sit down comedy segments after the monologue were good, hammy fun. Trump is an easy target, but he hit it out the park. It almost seemed more Daily Show than the Daily Show at times. I felt shades of the Fear/Sanity rally message as well, although it was more self assured.

Never heard New Orleans jazz singers be described as "hipster" and "artificial." Fascinating the things you hear on GAF

I'm not saying that it's not the norm, and I'm not saying it's a war crime. I'm just saying that for me, and apparently others, eight minutes straight of commercials qualifies as "a lot."

First time for everything...

I'm not alone in not caring for the band, sorry if my dislike was described in a not so favorable way.

I didn't think the bands first outing was a home run either but that description is, well, odd.

If you spend any time looking up John Batiste the guy has talent. And based on the Colbert finale he and his band have showmanship. Whether that will translate is yet to be seen. But hipster? Artificial? Nah. Unless we have completely changed the definitions of those words.

Oh wow the Late Late show guy is... bad.

Tell me about it. The show went from my favorite late show host to my least favorite late show host. Colbert is amazing, Fallon is good, Myers and O'Brien is OK, but Corden is terrible.

Jeb! Bonus! Clip! (the VIP guest question): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9Iuk9BYJKA

Jeb! is out of his league, as are the rest of the GOP candidates. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Biden and Sanders.

I miss Ferguson.... and Geoff... and Secretariat... :-(

I know Craig hasn't completely disappeared as he's host of the Celebrity Name Game but it's not the same :-\

He apparently has a special coming up in just a day on Sept 10th called Craig Ferguson: Just Being Honest but it's on EPIX which I don't get and don't want to pay for *bah*
