Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Uncharted: the Nathan Drake Collection

Given they have already said there is a day 1 patch that will improve performance I am not sure why DF are going nuts with a week of coverage pre patch.

Remaster seems solid though. Bluepoint always brings the goods though so that was never really a concern.

THIS is how it should be done. Option to disable motion blur, 1080p60. I dont mind playing on a console if this is the standard!

PC of course has more than 60 and 4k, but for a console its not bad.

Sure if you have a Beast Pc you will get 4K 60fps but like 99.9% of gamers havent so this is the best and cheapest way to play :)

You can also get 12K 120fps, just buy 4 Titans and spend 10 thousand euros on a Pc.

Uncharted 1 didn't have motion blur and 2 does. Did 3? I don't quite remember.

I'm more interested in recreating each title's motion blur, rather than apply it universally. That's just me, though.

EDIT: Uc3 had motion blur, but after a patch.

I could not possibly disagree with you more but, hey, opinions. The controls are much improved and most assets were remade or improved. Some parts looks a bit dated but, overall, I think it holds up great.

Can you elaborate on the specific parts you feel looked dated?

I beg to differ unless they patched that after I played it. It was ridiculous. To be fair I played through it in the first two days it was released
I know there was a few complaints about head shots when it launched but I'd never had issues doing head shots in the first game. I was happily popping people's heads with a single shot as I did my first play through at launch.

It sounds like this collection is everything I could have wanted out of it. Wonderful work.

I still need to know if it includes all three versions of the Uncharted title theme before I give it my blessing.

Because people are interested in how the game looks and performs, and they're interested in making money. They'll no doubt do a pre/post patch comparison as well. After watching their analyse I feel really comfortable with my pre-order, and knowing things are only going to get better with the patch makes me super excited.

I beat the first game on hard using just pistols - one shot to kill every basic enemy, 2 for those with helmets, and the monsters at the end where the only issue.

Seriously, the whole 'bullet sponge' thing was a complaint by people who didn't bother to aim and liked to spray and pray like it was Gears. It was not - quite different and you had to accustom yourself to it.

Since I have never played the first Uncharted, and it has been way too many years since I played Uncharted 2, this remaster collection is a must-buy for me.

The remaster to end all remasters? Could be!

Bluepoint should do a Demon's remaster ><

Insane For Sony
Area that's demoed in UC2 demo is one of the worst looking sections of the game. Really, when I remember visuals of that game, my mind first goes to sections like train, ice caves, the snow at the very beginning and the peaceful village, not Nepal streets.

Overal, I think visuals only in UC3 have aged amazingly well. Other two games have their visual highs, but have not aged quite as well.

I just hope they add some color to the game. I'm playing Dark Souls 1 now and i'm blown away by how upgraded the visuals are from both an art and pure color standpoint

I don't know, to me part of the appeal of Demon's Souls and what separates it is the bleakness reflected in the colour palette. I love the grey look.

I agree. I largely prefer Demon Souls to Dark simply because of how bleak and oppressive the entire game is.

It made going back to the hub even more of liberating in a lot of ways.

Sony, Bluepoint... please.

I hope they Remaster all the mainline Ratchet and Clank games. The trilogy and the 4 from the Future series.

They look great still but all in 1080p with improved textures and explosions.

That or Mass Effect Trilogy.

Eh the game does not need color.

A;so it would not make sense either.

I know the colorless fog makes everything so monotone, but its really tiring looking at for a whole game IMO, even though Demon's was probably my favorite game in the series.

Eh, i dunno. I hope they just remaster the game in any case lol. 60fps or 30fps? Maybe have a 30fps cap option to choose between the two

In UC1, enemies dodge bullets, they do a sway + head ducking motion and it's why you probably felt they took "80 bullets" for a headshot. Rest assured, if you actually had good aim, it's 1 shot to the head and they go down (2 if they have a helmet on). This applies to all three games and never changed (this also means it was never a patched change, just to make it 100% clear).

The bullet sponge nonsense people spew is a mix of poor aiming and lack of understanding that weapons do different damage -- in UC1, the AK-47 does less damage than the pistol you start out with in the game. Similarly, the Moss shotgun is better than the SAS-12 in damage because the SAS-12 has a faster firerate and can hit enemies further away (in UC1).

Uncharted 2 fixed the above for the most part, they normalized the damages (in the sense that they do the damage you expect them to) but weapons still do different damage and this isn't even accounting for when enemies have armor or not. However, you can bypass the damage differences if you simply go for headshots when you can and if you can.

And ND/Bluepoint have gone on further record stating that they've even made changes to damage across all three titles so who knows how different UC1's weapon damage will be or UC2 or even UC3. Out of all three, UC1 will likely see the most change out of this as many weapons in that game were completely inferior to the pistol you start out with and even the 92-FS pistol (with some exceptions like the Desert Eagle and the sniper).

I almost feel like for the OT we're gonna need a section on 'bullet sponges' lol. It's so bad how often it's brought up and how untrue it is (and how much more untrue it will be with the changes they've supposedly made to weapon damage).

I find this fascinating. One of the things I remember most about the 2 Uncharted that I played (1 and Golden Abyss) was how easy and how much fun it was to headshot your way through swaths of enemies.

Great post.

The Ak in Uncharted 1 need over 8 bullets to kill and the 9mm pistols took 3-4 hits on a pirate and 4-5 on armed soldiers. I'd argue that Uncharted 2-3 brought bullet sponges in the form of armored enemies.

Great post. I think with this Collection we'll have a better understanding of how many of these "bullet sponge" complaints relate to poor aiming, or a lack of headshots, seeing as how the number of headshots you pull are now tallied in leader boards.

For those that really struggle, the "Explorer" mode enables aim assist with a CoD style lock on when you pull L2.

It had camera blur, not object blur.

The one that comes to mind first is the jeep turret section in UC1. Just looks a bit awkward these days. The vehicle sections in UC2 and 3 are still incredible, though.

Going to enable both object and camera motion blur in all of them or only object motion blur :)?

I have always found it strange that Uncharted gets raked over the coals for having bullet-sponge enemies, yet they are just as spongy in Gears and it takes a clip and a half to kill most enemies in Halo.

This isn't a console wars post btw, they are just the two best examples I can think of.
