I dunno if I should get a reduced price SP3 now. How relevant is the improved pressure sensitivity?

Finally. I've tried using SP3 (and SP1) earlier and the fans were one of the pain points. The display/resolution was the another sticking point and the SP4 has almost the same as the iPad Pro I was gushing over (the SurfaceBook is even higher :O). I was all set for a iPad Pro but this makes that decision much harder. My only concern is Windows :|

It depends on what you want to do. Sketching and taking notes? The SP3 should be more than good enough for that. Going deep into digital drawing and stuff? The SP4 might be better for you.
It depends on how much you want to spend and what you really need.
iPad has all the apps.
Surface runs full Photoshop and other applications.
It's hard to say what I'd do until I actually see how the iPad Pro deals with simple shit like multitasking and file management. The app library isn't even worth mentioning when no app library is close to being as large as the one available right now on PC. "other applications" is literally every application on the planet not made by apple including my steam library.

Depends if you want more of a tablet or more of a laptop. If you want a powerful tablet then get the iPad pro. If you want a super portable laptop get the Surface.
The surface makes a pretty poor tablet in my experience but its a pretty good computer. I have no idea about the iPad pro because I haven't used one yet. But its still an iPad so it at least has good tablet apps
Those PC apps are miserable to use in tablet mode though
After seeing the pricing structure for the surface book (how the starting model doesn't have the dGPU), are the new type covers the same way? I see there is only one model with the finger print scanner and it has more expensive. I don't really care about the scanner, but I want the new one for the new keyboard (which all seem to have) and the glass track pad. I'm wondering if only the finger print version has the glass track pad or if they all do.
Word on the street is that the pressure sensitivity is all in the pen, not the digitiser, so if you find the sp3 pen isn't semsitive enough you can always just upgrade to the new pen.
yeah it's a tight comparison. SP4 with pen and keyboard is cheaper* even without waiting to beg some student for the 10% discount. I also have a MBA that I want to replace with the new Macbook depending on how much or little productivity I could get done on the iPad Pro. If I'm willing to give up OSX the SP4 could replace both purchases in one swoop. For all the talk about how expensive the new Surface Pro and Book, coming over from the Apple ecosystem these Microsoft devices offer some much more value for money.
iPad has most of the consumption apps but Apple dropped the ball with their Notes solution and Microsoft hasn't actually announced OneNote for the iPad Pro yet. OneNote is obviously much better on the SP4 too. The iPad apps thing is iffy. For my uses the iPad has simple setup&subscription apps for newspapers, magazines, comics. It's much harder to get useable versions of that on Windows. I don't care about games. However most of my tablet use was for browsing the web and Surface+Windows (or even Macbook+Safari/Firefox) shits all over iPad+mobileSafari. It's why I stopped buying the iPads actually, i just preferred using my laptop more for almost everything except reading books/magazines/comics...

This is one I'm hoping. I'm hearing some conflicting reports from some GAFfers, but on Microsoft's site, pressure sensitivity is never mentioned on either of the Surface Pro pages, and only on the Surface Pen pages. The spec sheets released also don't list pressure sensitivity among the footnotes for "Only for Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book"

Almost positive it's all about the pen. Even the page for the SP3 pen specifically calls out its 256 levels of sensitivity. If it was something specific to the screen/device, I think it would be mentioned there instead.
EDIT: Just saw the post below mine--interesting. Hope we get details on how it all works together.

I'm speculating on sales, and how those sales could have explained the decision around the type cover with fingerprint reader. I know it's available globally.
I think it's a good thing to leave that up to the user. Certain things will work, others will not. If I find that editing video using the stylus or my finger is just not accurate enough, I can always just sync up my Bluetooth mouse. Stuff like media digestion, reading PDFs, CBR or epub files will work just fine, which is what I use my iPad for.

which apps? I use Photoshop all the time on my Surface and it's lovely. I miss the keyboard more than some "tablet mode" issue (whatever that would be).

I'm disappointed that there's still jitter, being used to Wacom quality, I guess I'm waiting for some video evidence to see how bad it is before buying.

Plus the entire Adobe suite pretty much gives the user full control of the entire layout of the workspace, tabs,etc. if you really wanted to (I'm sure plenty of people with surfaces already do this) have a saved setup just for when you are in tablet mode and only have a stylus.
Wacom still has jitter when you are drawing lines slowly. It's not remotely perfect.
That's why I'll be buying from the US.

If it's improved enough I'll buy the SP4, but I really need to see it myself before paying 1000 for the product as I'll be using it strictly for drawing / painting.
I didn't - I have no idea how the m3 performs relatively....someone else may have though.
Yeah the SP3 one is known to be poor. Hopefully the reports of improvements in the SP4 are accurate.

Damn, could have sworn it was you but you're right. Someone posted how the m3 can outperform the i3 and is worth the bump from the base SP3 model, but can't find it now.
Windows Hello camera is a major gamechanger. Especially for anyone in a secure environment where they need to keep their device locked with a password. I've been using the Hello camera on a prototype laptop for a while and it's incredible. Unlocks instantly, and can never be fooled.

Well, I take Microsofts word over random internet dude. From the FAQ:
Does the Surface Pen that works with Surface Pro 4 work with other Surface devices?
A: Yes. With Palm Block technology and 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity, Surface Pen gives you a surprisingly natural way to mark-up documents and take notes in your own handwriting.
That doesn't leave any questions, the pen will work with other Surface devices (Surface, Pro 3 and Surface Book) and offer 1024 levels of sensitivity on all of them.

In the same position as you. I'm ready to throw money on a SP4 but being a digital artist myself, I feel like I'm going to be disappointed with how it performs in terms of drawing compared to a Wacom tablet. Not expecting it to be on par with a Wacom but at least not have an issue that doesn't allow you too draw a straight line.
It's why I was initially leaning towards the iPad Pro but I want the full fledge Windows OS that the SP4 offers.
Do they have the SP4 to play around with at Microsoft stores? Will stop by to check it out if they do but I'm guessing it won't go up until the 26th.

Yeah, obviously it hosts more improvements than I listed, those are the most important for me though.
really looking forward to seeing the Surface 4 next year. I determined that as awesome as the Surface Pro 4 seems, I really don't need to be spending that much on a device when a have a powerful mini itx desktop at home and a very slim and powerful work laptop.
the only issue with my work laptop is that it's more secure and can be restricted (can't use extensions in chrome for security purposes). In the future if the Surface 4 delivers, I might sell my Tab S2 to offset the cost and pick up a surface 4....
or I just say fuck it and pick up the Pixel C..

So what version would I need if I wanted it for drawing in paint.net, and for some light gaming like League of Legends or some indie games like Binding of Isaac on Steam? Would the cheapest Surface 4 Pro work or would I need the one with the i5? I would sell my Nvidia Shield Tablet to help pay for this thing, I'm super interested in having an actual decent laptop, not my shitty HP Stream 11.
I'm slightly leaning toward the Book right now but I need to get a feel for it in the store. I'm used to my Surface Pro 3 for the last year, including its weight. Not that the Book is heavy, but it's ~50% heavier.

Holy shit. I only use mine for writing so I never noticed it, i was about to say it's not like that on mine, but i just tested and damn! I found that it's reduced if you use it completely perpendicular, but it's very bad.
Yeah, ms needs to get down to that, i can't see people who actually use the pen for more than scribbling being happy about that.
I'm coming from basically a brick so either is going to feel like they weigh nothing to me.
I think you might be right, will try get my hands on the two of them.
Also leaning towards the Book if I can scrape the money together.

Yep pretty much what i thought.
Random internet guy is actually a blogger that Microsoft flew to NYC for hands on impressions.
I'm still hoping the SP4 Pen will still be worth the upgrade for SP3 users for the nib and tactile feel, and possible reduced jitter. Surfaceproartist will be testing it tomorrow.
