Kotaku: Fans Are Thirsty For A New Nintendo Direct

At this point, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool.

Delaying things for quality reasons hasn't really worked in their favor. If it had, they wouldn't be on the cusp of replacing the Wii U. The winding down of releases we're talking about right now wouldn't be happening.

At this point, the content is infinitely more important than the delivery. I agree with Empty; just get Miyamoto or Reggie in front of a camera and show off some trailers.

The host died. But no, GIMME MAH DIRECTS!!!1

It's not about Iwata.
Nintendo is way too quiet considering what should going on right now.

We have yet to know what the successor of Club Nintendo is, we should also know what the plans considering the mobile games are.

Both of those things are pretty large and we are supposed to have them both before this year ends. And considering that we are about to enter the second-to-last month of this year, it's really time to start talking again. We don't even have a message that we should wait a bit longer (Wich is something I would understand considering the circumstances). It's just empty silence, and that's not good.

I would like to have any kind of news by Wednesday, when the reports come in

I was teary eyed when hearing about his death but they have to move on at some point, for the good of their company and psyche and the good of the fans.

When they do that is of course up to them but continuing business as usual wouldn't be disrespectful to Iwata, it might be therapeutic.

I think they are taking the time because they don't want to slap together something, they are making methodical and "permanent" decisions that will stick.

There's simply no way they can do business as usual, for better or worse.

A regular Direct, after such a long time and such traumatic events, would lead to huge disappointment, and I don't see much evidence that there's anything to show that would lead to anything more than a relatively sub-standard Direct.

The only possible way that a Direct wouldn't be overshadowed by Iwata's death would be if it was a January 2013-style blowout, and that's simply not on the cards.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
They should just drop a short Nintendo Direct mini on YouTube without fanfare - expectations are suitably lowered and it shows some degree of a return to normality.

This idea that the first ND post-Iwata should be the best or none is ridiculous. Nintendo still exists as a company after his death, doesn't it? Maybe they should act then like they are still alive. Fine, they don't have huge news to do a spectacular Direct, but they have a decent amount of news to do a decent one. They did worst Directs than this in the past and was never an issue. Or fine, don't do a direct, but be more active in distributing the news in other way then. Because acting with the same secrecy like in the regular Directs times, but with no Nintendo Direct for many months makes it look like a company that doesn't work properly anymore.

I don't think the format has to change for it to still work. The reason Nintendo directs worked wasn't purely down to Iwatas presence alone. (Although his honesty and charm made him unique) they worked because people liked how much raw info was in them. The "personality" aspect and the skits just added warmth to them.

I think someone like Bill Trinen could easily fill the same role, He's got a good presence and he's easy to listen to, has a good sense of humor too. I would be interested in simply hearing him talk about upcoming Nintendo stuff. He also has a long, long established history of filling the PR role for Nintendo.

I think it's easy to overthink the appeal of ND's (which is sort of obvious reading the first few pages here) it's still just an info pipeline, I sincerely hope Nintendo isn't overthinking it's appeal either. They really just need to get back up on horse and start doing them again asap.

The first mobile game will be announced shortly. Whether or not that will be a Direct or like the Pokemon GO announcement remains to be seen though.

I still believe there will be a direct this week, related to the investor meeting, new club nintendo, mobile gaming and so on...or maybe a press conference or something, but Nintendo knows they gained hype with Pokemon GO, and they need to use that hype somehow

It's pretty obvious why they aren't having Directs right now.

1) The first one will be ignored in favor of the discussion Iwata's death had on it. Release a commercial where everyone ignores what is being advertised to them, that's a good idea.

2) There's probably still a lot of people who simply do not know what to do with it now. The president (and, more importantly here, spokesman) died. It's going to require a decent bit of market research and surreptitious polling to figure out what they should do with it now. It should go on, but in what form? You bring it back the wrong way and you've crashed that train forever.

3) They don't have anything to show. Bring back Nintendo Directs, the first since Iwata's death! This'll be amazing, people are so thirsty for one! ....oh, it's Twilight Princess HD. We knew about that through datamining. Oh, it's Fire Emblem with english voices, big whoop. Oh, I guess that Pikachu Detective game exists, there's a Pokken date, another Smash DLC character, we waited six months for this?

Wii U and 3DS development is winding down. Well, it's wound down, there's likely few if any major announcements down the pipeline. They aren't talking about their new system yet, which will be similarly anemic in the first few months because it's Nintendo and that's what they do. They simply don't have shit to show right now and they have even less shit to show before the NX is revealed than they do after.

At this point, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool.

Next direct will be tomorrow in Paris
Yes, N going third party with Zelda u being recalled Zelda ps4!

:p

I wanted to add a little dramma there :p

Why? I'm sorry but this is stupid to say this. Do you think it is smarter to begin communication just before holiday season?

Smarter on their part or my part? Since I'm so stupid, I couldn't tell if you were referring to their intelligence or mine in your hastily-constructed question.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Neither do you.. no one does

CHALLANGE ACCEP..... Ahh never mind that's just cruel.

They are being super quiet in general though that's for sure, I didn't even realize Zelda came out yet for 3DS. Must have pretty muted expectations this quarter, Savin up the pennies

Kotaku: "People hungry for marketing"
I love Nintendo, but Nintendo Directs are just cheap marketing.

Almost every news that do not come from things like Unseen64 or are leaks is basicaly cheap marketing.

The diference that Nintendo Directs is cheap marketing without the journalism as the middleman. It is cheap marketing to US, not to please kotaku or ign for them to show what they want us to see.

Each direct is like an e3 conference thinking about us who are not there at the e3 convention center, us, the people who will bough their shit, not the journalists who will get their shit as review copies =P

It is cheap marketing, but it is awesome cheap marketing in "christmas morning" package

What does Nintendo have to talk about that's coming out in the next 2/3 months?

Enough for a direct for sure.

This Year
Mario Tennis
Animal Crossing Amiibo Party
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Xenoblade X
New Smash DLC
New Splatoon Content
More Amiibo stuff/release dates

Early Next Year
SMT x FE
Hyrule Warriors 3DS/New Content
Fire Emblem Fates
Final Fantasy Explorers
Bravely Default 2
Project X Zone 2
Pokken (new character reveal?)
Star Fox

Plus there's always something new they throw into Directs.

Didn't they say they were going to continue Directs even after Iwata's passing? If that's the case I'm not seeing where the argument that they can't do them because of that comes in.

I think they're going to hold off on the direct until next year, to be honest. Going to launch the spring season with Star Fox and Federation Force as the lead games, much like how Mario Maker and Tri Force Heroes were the two leads for the fall.

That's how I feel too. Not only that but maybe start the new year off strong, since they are in a transitional period. Why not hold off, announce a Direct for the new year, guns blazing w/ announcing the NX along with talking about the other stuff on the way for 2016?

Yeah. They might as well do the next one in January 2016 to start off with a clean slate. (Well, that and the fact that they'll need announce dates for early 2016 titles like Fire Emblem Fates, StarFox, #FE, and Federation Force.)

At this point I gather they're waiting on Miyamoto and Aonuma to lead a show, seeing as how they are both prominent known personalities who have something to show for 2016.

I just don't think the people who've been spamming every Twitter post that Nintendo's made over the past few months begging for the Direct are going to be satisfied with an Amiibo Festival trailer and Twilight Princess HD, and I don't think Nintendo are keen to relaunch what is an important and successful marketing format for them on the wrong foot.

But this is the reality and Nintendo should be rather upfront about it than hide it under the rug. There are also few games coming in the first half of 2016, those could also be on the list for a Nintendo Direct.

There won't be any more very spectacular NDs until NX is announced, so what? Nintendo should play dead until that? How to become irrelevant in 10 easy steps. It's practically repeating the end of Wii era, having nothing to show and talking about nothing and get out of everybody's radar.

Nintendo NDA's their NDA's.

Seriously, what do you want them to talk about that they haven't already shown? Another Xenoblade trailer for NA? Star Fox? Pokken? Fire emblem and bravely default 2? Twilight princess HD? If they released one at the end of the year you'd all complain there was nothing new or no megatons and than say they should have talked about the NX even though they've mentioned repeatedly you aren't getting info on that until 2016.

Hopefully Nintendo gets the message thanks to this story. Yeah, a lot of them ultimately underwhelmed, but that just showed people cared and were excited.

Yes?

HELL YES!

"There is nothing new" and yet you mention Pokken from which we've seen very little and Twilight princess from which we've seen nothing. How about SSB ballot vote result? How about Splatoon upcoming things? How about what's coming in Q1 2016?

Or are you sarcastic and I missed it?

Edit: Things like this were usually part of Directs too.

This sums it all up pretty well.

Most of the games that are coming out now have either come out across seas or are just smaller games that only need one trailer and that's it. We got our info about Mario Tennis Ultra Smash and we know enough about the remainder of games coming this year.

Jumpstarting Nintendo Directs in January next year is the best thing to do. They will talk more about those 2016 Wii U/3DS games plus drum up more possible info about the NX.

Didn't someone say in an investor call that they had more Mario Kart 8 DLC coming before the end of the fiscal year as well? My friends and I always get a kick out of racing as Link or Villager, so I can't imagine more guest characters like that don't come. Honestly, if I don't see Kirby, Pikachu, or DeDeDe in MK8, I'll be shocked.

Really? You've seen nothing from twilight princess? A 9 year old game? Another smash character? You've seen enough of pokken to know what it is. Splatoon dlc would be cool.

The fact is we've seen trailers for all the 2015 and Q1 2016 games. You know what the games are about. All that's left to show is smaller titles, filler titles, and games that have been released over seas but are coming to the west.

If that excites you than that's fine. To each their own. But based on how much work goes into a direct and producing video content, and couple that with Iwata death, I'm not so sure it's worth spending the money to produce a direct if that's all they have left to talk about.

Now if there was new Zelda footage, an official Zelda title and release date, that's a different story but all signs point to them being silent on Zelda.

Don't be dense. Nobody not under NDA has seen Zelda Twilight Princess HD. Yes, I didn't write the "HD" but I was responding directly to your quote that was talking about the "HD". Maybe you have seen already Twilight Princess HD, but then you're not the target for any direct anyhow.

Speaking of, you come as "I wish things that don't interest me wouldn't exist".

It's going to be a prettier TP. Yes I'm excited for it but is an HD remake of a 9 year old game a good reason to make a direct?
