Sony: 'No plans to dial back third-party deals in 2016'

I have been saying this. If PS4 still holds strong this holiday with no exclusives, Sony wont battle against TP giants and wont put the exclusives in october/november in the coming years. This is how I feel at least
If it means loads of 1st/2nd party all year and focus on third party during Nov/ Dec, I'm ok with that.

I hate third party exclusive deals (even temporary ones) as they only take away things from players (baring when the game/ Dlc wouldn't exist otherwise), but they chose to fight fire with fire I guess.

Not that Sony was not privy to these kinds of things before, but MS took it to new heights last gen, and again this gen with RotR imo.

Highlight third party AAA games while first party focuses on VR?

If this is true, then I'm not sure how I feel about Sony's priorities.

Hmm, you pulled that one out of your ass. They have a ton of great first party games for next year.

I remember when Microsoft announced Rise of the Tomb Raider during E3 last year and i believe CD actually got death threats from people and in general people seemed mad at MS, but the thing is...Sony does exactly the same. Maybe even worse really.

It's all good with me though. Next year i'll be adding the PS4 as well and then i'm done. Well...unless NX is going to be worth it.

That is not why MSFT received flak. It the their deceptive PR spin.

Which is a very good strategy.

What MS is doing by putting their biggest IPs against third parties is really a waste.

Much better to pad out the first party stuff during the quieter months and maximize sales than to get lost in the shuffle during the X-mas season.

Struggling to think of a time when Sony paid a dev/pub to just *not* make an Xbox version of a game that was announced as a multiplatform title.

Anyway, as long as first-party exclusives *actually* come out next year, I won't be too mad about this. They focused too heavily on it this year, but, they still had a decent spread of first-party joints.

So basically Sony first party titles come out between January to April, then from May to June would be third-party Huge title releases. During the summer maybe released a couple of first party, big indie titles(NMS?) to cool your thirst. From September to December will be basically EA, Activision, Ubisoft and SquareEnix dominating the ps4 console. Very sound strategy. I don't know why people get mad about it, it seems like the perfect balance to make both sides happy.

Well NMS was initially only announced for PC, then it was supposed to make its console debut on PS4, now it's a console exclusive. Shenmue might be arguable too.

No reason to stop but I personally don't like the idea of first party stuff taking a back seat to this.
I don't think first party stuff will take a backseat, they have lots of teams working on stuff, they're just scooping up third party deals because they have the biggest userbase and they might as well go for the kill, this is looking more and more like the PS2 era where they simple dominated, except they now have the more powerful console.

Not really a fan of the practice whoever does it but from a business perspective why would they dial it back? Seems to be working and they seem to be getting the better deals overall so no doubt they'll keep doing it.

It's humorous that people are turning this into a notion that Sony has no first party exclusives. Anybody paying a moment of attention to Sony's past and present state of first party releases and projects knows that is absolute nonsense. You might as well say Nintendo has no first party library if you're stretching that far.

The ps4 version exists because Sony is paying for the port and marketing of the port. If you want a xbone version ask Phill Spencer to pay for a port.

So tired of seeing this bs rhetoric.

The sales, software attachment rate due to those sales, bundles offered, marketing, and the fact that as you said... they shift their first party away from the TP holiday battle, makes them very appetizing to publishers as a whole.

Which is a very good strategy.

100% agreed, you guys complemented my thinking.

Agreed on that they should have been more clear on the deal. Phil Spencer did clearly say it was a deal with a duration and that they didn't buy the franchise or whatever it was that he said. But at the time during and after E3, we didn't know what kind of deal it exactly was, but around that time CD had already received threats. Pathetic really.

Neither did MS, you make it sound like Rise of the TR is not coming to PS4. If i misunderstood you, then it's my bad.

So tired of seeing this bs rhetoric.

Sure, let's act like it's all bullshit, which it really isn't. Not only talking about this place, many other forums too and people i know in general. There was always clearly more negativity towards MS pulling this kind of stuff compared to Sony. And i guess it depends on what one calls worse. Do correct me on this, but Sony keeping Destiny (not that i give a shit about the game) DLC a year exclusive is probably much worse than any of those deals MS has done. I certainly don;t remember many, if any like that. Except now of course with Tomb Raider.

Yep, double standards. I remember people saying it was anti competitive, for Microsoft to make a timed exclusive deal, yet there are several that one could site on the PlayStation side.

Timed exclusives are one thing, but the whole exclusive content thing is probably more annoying to me. If you're gonna have exclusive content, then do it for all platforms like Soul Calibur II or something, there was fun in that. But locking content to one platform is shady. Same goes for Microsoft, obviously.

Yeah there's no reason why they would stop. Some of the marketing has been very effective. I wouldn't be surprised if there's people out there who think games like Destiny and Star Wars Battlefront are PS4 exclusives.

Yep, it works. If you are looking o buy a console especially to play the new battlefront, PS4 seems to be the default choice.

What am I reading here?

Gotta make up for what will be the most sparse Playstation 1st party line up this generation, right? Only one that has an appropriate amount of 1st party games is Nintendo and even then its not helping them with how little else they have.

Three of those titles named in the OP are third party. Second party at a stretch.

OK. Not sure what you are getting at but take those 3 out and replace them with The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2 and Ratchet & Clank.

No I think they correctly realize which games sell consoles. PS4 has a stacked lineup next year in terms of excusives, both 1st and 3rd party. If you can get the top multiplats associated with your platform as well then why not do it?

Have you actually looked at the planned ps4 releases next year for Sony

Out of PS4's exclusives next year, only Uncharted and GT Sport are big/system sellers. The Last Guardian, Persona, Gravity Rush...etc won't do shit to sell PS4s. People need to realize that.

Does the map pack early thing really work?

I've always thought publishers just laugh and take the money while users don't care. If you own a PlayStation or Xbox, you still play the same content with other players at the same time. It's feels like such a waste of money. Was 360 more popular because XBL worked better, maybe nicer performance and a nice controller for COD or because the map packs were first?

I certainly don;t remember many, if any like that. Except now of course with Tomb Raider.

The Destiny DLC1 year thing is obviously shit (at least they didn't try to pass it as a forever), but name 1 thing Sony has done in the past 10yrs with third party games that is akin to the RotTR BS (third party game headed to multiplat, removing it for 2 platforms it sells the most on and presenting it falsely as a forever exclusive).

Games that wouldn't exist otherwise are obviously not counting, so no SF V (which itself is a situation akin to DR3 really).

MS:
DLC for TR Underworld removed from the game and made a -lifetime- 360 exclusive
1 year delay on GTA IV DLC (Obfuscated as a forever)
Swearing that ME2 was an exclusive (and that Bioshock wasn't coming to PS3)
Making a last minute backroom door deal with EA (behind the devs back) to make sure Titanfall1 would never come to PS4

Etc. (I dont even count the short dlc exclu, as Sony has unfortunately fully stepped up to that)

Yeah, but I think Persona 5 is a system seller. In Japan it will. Same goes for DQ XI.

I mean, why would they? The Destiny co-marketing alone must have earned them millions of console sales. Black Ops 3 and Battlefront will probably do the same. As long as they don't neglect first party software - which they're clearly not - then it's pretty much a win-win for them.

And did you read my post? I mentioned Microsoft as well. It's a shitty thing to do.

That last sentence must have been a stealth edit, because it was not there when I clicked "quote". My apologies for not hitting F5 before quoting.

Yeah, I wanted to mention Microsoft because they do this as well, but since this is a thread about Sony, my main point was focused on them.

I disagree this games add value to the console along side 3rd party games. Personally I would be interested as much as I'm in PS4 if it weren't for those Personas and Gravity Rushes. Standalone they may not mean much but with few such titles it matters.
