Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Dam, it's like they've made absolutely zero effort to improve anything about this engine. 120 hz+ still fucked, vsync still has horrendous judder, no effort to make FOV easily accessible.

I'll give it another try when they can manage to get 120hz+ working. I should have known better than to buy a PC game at launch day, especially when i'm running "specialized" hardware.

grrr

Edit: Okay, borderless windows mode seems to help a lot with the Vysnc judder, so i'll keep playing... But man, I wish I had 120hz

Are god rays bugged because I see zero difference between ultra and low except the fps hit.

Nah, it's just a piece of over-tesselated effect to shine Nvidia on a better light on more recent hardware.

Just set it on Low and be happy with the same effect for 40% more performance.

It's running better than I expected. I'm playing on high settings with mostly 60 fps, with dips into the 50's every now and then.

i5 3570K 4.4ghz
670
8GB RAM

Same minus the OC, was about to pull the trigger on a 670 too - may I ask what settings you are using ? (Windowed etc. )

Should be a warning in the OP, really. I think it's part of the reason the tweak guide was removed. The difference between ultra and low god rays was pretty much non-existent, but the comparison showed a severe performance hit, but the author said it was "the way it's meant to be played, at a relatively low performance cost". lol

I got drops to the 40's in the same spot with a 980Ti + 4690k @ 4.5ghz.

I have a 3570k, 970, 8gigs of ram all at stock and that's where I first noticed consistent and elongated drops. Everywhere else was almost a perfect 60fps. I'm running everything on high @ 1080p with maxed out AA and HBAO.

I go to start the game on Steam, and it starts downloading what I would assume is the day 1 patch, over an hour to complete. What is the point of a preload then? Sheesh.

Hoping I can get a near solid 60fps on my 970 and 2500K.

Posting again, because eventually someone will also be dealing with this and potentially have a solution.

Can I get any help? Can't set a custom resolution for borderless windowed mode and the game only runs in borderless windowed mode. If I try fullscreen the game stutters between a black screen. I don't want to play this game with the corners of my desktop peeking out.

Any help?

He clearly meant that the way it's meant to be played was setting it on low compared to off. He even advises low godrays in his summary at the end of the guide.

Anyone else running this on a 280X? What kind of frames can I expect at 1080p?

The R9 285 seems to get around 54 fps and I figured the 280X would be close to that mark.

Well, I tried it on my aging i7-950 rig at 4K resolution on my 980 Ti. So far just explored the starting area and a little bit outside.

The framerate is always jumping around for me, it's 60 fps and I turn like 45 degrees and it chugs down to 35 fps. I guess it could be worse, and the game does look very nice in 4K.

Are there any big performance killers I can turn off to help stabilize the framerate?

Turn down God Rays.

I'm playing on low and things are going pretty ok. My specs are:

- i5-2500K @ 3.3Ghz
- 8GB RAM
- Nvidia GeForce 550Ti (1GB)
- 500GB 7200RPM HDD

I have the game ready driver installed too.

Only experieced kinda wonky framerates at the beginning of the game and in the vault. After that, things are excellent.

Does new Nvidia driver help with performance?

Still cant get over that game doesnt have motion blur ;/ I will probably have to lower settings and downsampling for 45/50fps lock in the long run.

The setting doesn't affect the quality of the god rays themselves per se but rather that of the objects they interact with. At Low, such objects are somewhat pixelated, whereas at Ultra they're rendered at full resolution or perhaps even higher still given the game's Ultra graphics preset has the option set to High rather than Ultra.

(I typed "dog rays" at first and almost didn't notice.)

Where'd that forum thread on a bunch of tweaks/optimisations go? It was on a Bethesda forum or something and I can't find it.

performance is....bad for me

particularly towns are major hits for me, sometimes dropping below 30
all settings medium except textures (high) and godrays completely off. 2x aa

I have the 970 and a 2500k 3.3 and it runs good with everything at Ultra settings. Some frame rate dips in larger combat scenarios. If I turn down AA, it's even better.

Edit: Forgot to mention I'm just running it at 1080p so I can play on my television. Also 16gb of RAM.

If you're running in borderless windowed mode that might happen. Vsync is enabled by default, so fullscreen should eliminate screen tearing. Make sure you don't have any utilities or graphics card control panel overriding it.

The name I saw mentioned was:

That's a little extreme =P

120hz is not going to be possible until they completely redesign the physics implementation. I doubt that will happen for TES6 either. We're looking at next gen consoles at the earliest there. As for FOV changes, doesn't the old Skyrim trick work? Tweak the ini files. Find the Fallout4.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini in the documents/my games/Fallout 4 directory and add the following lines to the [Display] section:

fDefaultWorldFOV=100
fDefault1stPersonFOV=100

Change 100 to whatever FOV you want. Default is 80.

Does anybody know if there is a way in the game to lock the framerate?
Would prefer to have it at a ultra stable 30 instead of fluctuating between 37 to 50 -60.

What happened to the Nvidia article? It says Page unauthorized

I wanted to check if I should continue using TXAA or drop it down to None at 1440p. I'm trying to gather the maximum performance for my 280X.

Use RivaTunerStatisticsServer, or RTSS. You can cap the framerate with that.

Fallout 4 Steam page says "minimum requirement: 8GB RAM"

Can I run this game with 6GB?
Will I get an error message? Will the game be paging constantly to my SSD and drop frames like a m*?

Rest of my system with GTX 970 and core i7 should be more than enough for this game.

What seems to be the most manageable uGrids setting on a 980ti?

Was thinking of going with 9.

I'm using uGrid 9 with 1.25x.1.25 downsampling to 1080p on 970 and High God Rays and in worst scenarios i had 30fps, generally its like 40.
You should be fine on 980Ti with God Rays on Medium and 1080p if You want locked 60fps.

Thanks. But WHY was it removed after only a couple of hours? That doesn't make any sense.

Maybe also nvidia considered ridicolous to have a guide in which is recommended to have the over-tesselated godrays at ultra with example images that showed no difference.

I keep tweaking the .ini files for VSYNC and FOV, but it's hard to tell if it's actually working or not.

I have a 970, 4790 @ 4.00GHz, and 16GB RAM, but the game is a stuttering mess, the mouse controls are delayed as hell (especially in menus), and I seem to have 'stable' framerate with nearly everything maxed. The thing is, the stutters are so severe it's making the game almost unplayable. Anyone else experienced anything like this?

To make sure the .ini tweaks work, I turn off 'Read Only', make the changes, save, and then turn 'Read Only' back on, right?

Is anyone else experiencing these stutter issues similar to me with a similar setup? Any help would totally be appreciated.

Hrm.

Runs between 30 and 60 FPS (more frequently 60) on Ultra at 1080p (native resolution) on my rig:

i7 4770K
16 gigs of RAM
GeForce GTX 780

Was a little worried at first cause the opening FMV cinematic was a little stuttery.

Quite happy with this.

I honestly have no idea. The rest of your system will cream this game though. Everything on Ultra except at godrays at 60fps 1080p, so honestly I'd say go for it, see how it runs, and if it doesn't cope with 6GB then RAM is dirt cheap these days anyway =)

I don't think it's true exclusive fullscreen mode since you can get the mouse to jump to a second monitor briefly if you move it quickly enough.

However, vsync should still work unless you have D3DOverrider / borderless window mode / NVidia control panel / whatever disabling it.

Borderless window mode should eliminate tearing if you have Windows Aero enabled.

Installed on a Samsung 840 240GB SSD

Maxed out @ 1080p

So far I'm getting and average of 59FPS, occasional drops to 57 or 55 but pretty rare. Game is running like a dream so far.

Damn dude, you have pretty much the same exact build as me, except I have the 250GB 840 EVO (maybe you had a typo on your size?)

Either way, i'm glad to hear it's running well for you. Means i'm in for some goodness tomorrow.

LMAO at God rays. I knew Nvidia would use dirty tricks with tessellation and physics where Maxwell GPIs perform well via their fast tessellation and optimized drivers; I just didn't think it would be something as silly as God rays.

So, push Gameworks, adjust the tessellation slider to "maximum diminishing returns", and you can safely put Nvidia's logo in the opening of the game.

Anyway, I hope that my gtx 780 will perform well; I am worried about borderless as I read that it affects performance.

I thought someone found a way to force Hbao +, the game desperately needs it.

That is like the first thing I was waiting for when I saw the console screenshots.

Well it definitely runs on my 5770, at low settings the framerate is not great with blurry textures. 4770k with 16 GB RAM.

Still waiting for pascal.
Huh I didn't think it would run on gpu's with less than 2gb vram. Do you have ingame screenshots? I'd like to see what it looks like.

any quick settings I can tweak to increase performance?

it's crazy how games like Wolfenstein look so much better and run so much smoother.. this game looks pretty bad IMO and runs awful.. reminds me of Far Cry 3

Wolfenstein and Fallout 4 are apples and oranges.
What are your current settings and specs ? If you have not already done so lower god rays to high, the ultra preset is just too taxing and the visual return is rather subtle.

Try Godrays and Shadow Quality/distance.
