Netflix, Brad Pitt's Plan B Back $50M Korean Movie 'Okja'

Netflix will invest $50 million in upcoming South Korean film Okja by Bong Joon Ho, local production company Okja SPC announced on Tuesday.

The film is one of the first features in Asia to be backed by the streaming firm, which is in the process of launching services across the region. Netflix is expected to launch in Korea in 2016.

“It really is a fantastic opportunity for me as a filmmaker,” Bong said in a statement. “For Okja, I needed a bigger budget than I had for Snowpiercer and also complete creative freedom. Netflix offered me the two conditions that are difficult to have in hand simultaneously,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tilda Swinton, who starred in Snowpiercer, is set to have a role in Okja. Other cast members include Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano and Bill Nighy.

Auditions are currently underway for a young actress to play the lead role in the story, about the friendship between a girl and an animal named Okja. Production is slated to begin in Korea and New York in late 2016 for a 2017 release.

that's great, what the hell is chan wook park up to though? he by far had the best english film of these korean directors, snowpiercer was corny as hell

According to Okja SPC, Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment has also come aboard to co-produce the film. The company headed by Pitt was behind World War Z and 12 Years a Slave, as well as War Machine. Netflix invested in the latter.

Seriously. I really, really respect he and Angelina for all they're doing for diversity in Hollywood. A lot of people gave them flack for adopting all those kids as if it were just a PR stunt, but they seem to walk the walk.

Snowpiercer was disappointing, and this is coming from a massive Bong Joon-ho fan. I can't say I'm as excited about him doing another English language film (just felt a bit off last go around)... here's hoping this turns out much better!

yes you did,

let me reiterate to you. Matt Damon's point is that for his TV competition of who has the best project you shouldnt judge based on the diversity of the group but the talent and output of the group.

The funding for this team is done because they have proven beforehand that they are primarily very talented NOT because primarily its a different diversity group

yes! netflix investing in korean cinema is great. I fucking love korean movies, but netflix is so fucking slow with new ones. hopefully this speeds things up.

but then we have netflix japan but no new japanese movies.. and netflix japan doesn't have english subtitles ;__;

life is hard as an asian movie fan.

Do you also purposefully misrepresent what he said about gay people, or is only purposefully misrepresenting what he said about minorities worth the discussion that follows?

Headline is via Hollywood-Reporter, I just copypasted it. Thread was an attempt to focus solely on the film and less on the surroundings, otherwise I would have copypasted the entire article, which I wanted to avoid. Should have chosen a better title to avoid confusion and derails, my apologies. Edited the thread now.

because the competition was about chosing the best not about chosing the most diverse. it was about choosing the winner of his tv show competition. this is why what Matt Damon said does not apply to this thread.

The Host and Snowpiercer are both very good. The Host is a really fun monster romp, and Snowpiercer successfully brings his blend of darkness, weird sense of humor, and general idiosyncrasies to an American action movie making for a really unique movie, and one that's a successful story in its own right. It's got lots of cool visual storytelling to go along with its interesting premise too.

Neither are as good as Mother or Memories of Murder though, that much is true.
