NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

Their plan was to sell the most console and they did despite Sony's price drop.
Ask 2 people and get 3 opinions.
I heard it's about profit.
Now that they sold more consoles it's about that.
And I thought it's about the first this gen iteration of their biggest exclusive trying to push the maximum of sales in hardware and software. Because it's their best and maybe last chance for quite a while to win big.

To be fair to Greenburg, what do you want him to say?

I thought their plan was not to fight in a console war any longer, and it was not about numbers anymore?

I can see why now, considering their flagship did not even break a million units combined.

Yep.

Then how did they sold more than PS4 despite Sony's price drop? GAMES GAMES GAMES.

Should games be pluralized?? I have much better alternative hypotheses.

- SCEA not advertising the price cut aggressively enough
- Consumers were waiting for BO3 and Battlefront bundles
- Consumers were waiting for holiday deals, in general

1 game. And they barely beat it.

lmao its like some people just want to downplay the shit out of MS good news. Let me emphasis this. Dat barely beat happened even after Sony announced price drop.

Of course man of course. I totally forgot that everyone is just waiting to buy PS4 for COD and BF. Microsoft will just stop selling thier console next month and wont even advertise free game and no one wants Fallout, tomb raider bundles. Like no one.

And you are overplaying it. This is not a good sign for MSFT either. But they will have board members to answer to, as to how their "plan" was to have much lower Halo/system sales than projected I am sure.

How do you even go to one extreme like this? Nobody is saying that, like, at all. Cut out the persecution complex. Goodness.

Lets see this from a different perspective.
At same price for both consoles Sony just needed a Remaster to almost equal MS biggest franchise launch.

PS4 has plenty of games too, you know.

The fact that XB1 won by a small difference (if the numbers are to be believed) is an indication.

And the argument just shifted, lmao. Go read my post. Microsoft took over because of Halo. And halo is a game. Its one of their game in biggest game line up.

Oh great, here comes the persecution complex...

Interesting that "people" equates to "everyone". You're not helping yourself, OEM...

391k and AC doesn't has bundle in USA.

was there even a syndicate sku bundle this year?
OK thanks, still very low, seems like a very dramatic drop, can really one bad game (Unity) ruin a franchise like this? how can a franchise that sold millions last time can get as low as 391k a game after, that's crazy.

And I guess Sony knew what they are doing by not releasing a bundle for this game in the US.

And MS released their flagship product which barely pushed Xbone over PS4. And that flagship product's sales are almost catasthropic. MS makes good money from Halo 5, yes, but its attach rate is around 10% and that is horrible for a flagship product of any sorts.

This "victory" is bittersweet. Most people wouldn't call this a victory at all.

391k for ACS is hilariously bad.

After Unity is not that surprising. Although, according to many here on GAF/Interwebs WOM seems to be positive. Maybe the $30 price during BF along with positive WOM might help its numbers. That's assuming WOM matters at all.

MGSV dropping out completely and being under 200K sold is much more surprising.

I guess you forgot about that time Microsoft announced they were doing a price drop the following month and like no one bought a Xbox one that month

You're so blinded by console war stuff you're not seeing the bigger picture here at all, like how yeah....Microsoft won but not by the margin they or anyone else wanted them to win by

391k is downright embarrassing for Assassins Creed.

For a AAA flavour of the month game? Not really. It launched in early September. Die hard fans would have bought their copies week 1 if not day 1.

The game is out on 4 consoles and PC. Contender for GOTY and we are just chucking it up to be being flavor of the month... okay.

Little early to be calling this. Go back and look at Halo 3's sales. Yes it debuted higher, but what you should take a look at is how it ended up selling several million copies over the course of the months through the end of 2007.

I don't think anyone is expecting Halo 5 to play catch up to Halo 3, the circumstances for the Xbox 360 and the Halo franchise were totally different back then, but we'll get a much better sense of where the Xbox and Halo franchise are at when we get past the holiday.

Its amazing how <1million is disappointing for one game but amazing for another, like TLOU for example which sold as much and probably cost as much as H5 to make.

Am i the only guy who is not shocked about AC numbers?
I mean, i predicted a bit less than 500k, so, it still sold under what i predicted, but those poor performance was expected.

...Really? A new IP compared to a series which usually sold > 3 million?

Also, TLOU has sold OVER 1 million, not < 1 million.

No, myself and a lot of commentators were definitely with you. Even regardless of Unity's hiccups, a lot of us were expecting the series to start running out of steam with this one.

Throwing out all the sales numbers:

Halo 5 has a 10% attach.

That is a catastrophic number for a first-party flagship title and will probably result in leadership changes @ 343i if it holds.

Of course! I'm most certain that Halo will sell tons on BF and holidays. It'll end up at around 4 or 5 mil I guess.

Yeah, Halo 5 tells the story of Xbone. Xbox is Halo, Halo is Xbox. You can see how healthy the console is by checking out how mainline Halo sales go.

OEM, everyone did terribly in October. I've been called an MS shill, I've been called a Sony shill. So, apparently I'm an asshole equally to both camps. But really, it wasn't a great month. I guess they did hit the goal of being #1 in October, which is good. But the actual data points are disappointing for everyone. Well, everyone except maybe Yoshi. Like, it wasn't a good month, and to spin it as such is ignoring the bigger picture, don't you think?

EDIT: Okay, I see the point you were trying to make now.

On a more serious note, Cosmic, any thoughts on how the PS4, XB1 & Wii U will do this holiday?

Hi. I'm not as good at forecasting hardware as most (or all) in the predictions thread. I focus much more on software, and since both boxes are market viable, I generally think much more about software splits between the platforms for the next few years. That being said, despite September and October maybe being a bit disappointing, don't see any reason why the sales of both boxes combined couldn't get close to, or slightly exceed, last year. But really the aggregate predictions of GAF are as good or better than any professional forecast you'd find. And there are a bunch of normal forecasters in that thread whose opinions I'd take way before mine lol.

Or how Nintendo Direct announcements affect likely US sales for the Wii U / 3DS (software/hardware)?

I've actually never looked to see if anything can be found to suggest there is a relationship here. To be fair though, monthly data is absolutely horrid to find causal relationships between individual influencers on sales. Impossible, really.

Also we have nothing on 3DS right?... I assume it's down YoY, but I'm curious by how much.

Safe assumption.

Edit: Wait, this is the quote from IGN "The company added that sales “have increased more than 20 percent in the first 10 months of 2015” year-over-year." for the Wii U. I thought it was easily down YoY. Is this software as well?

IGN really goofed on interpreting that stuff today. Yeah that's software revenues.

You assumed consumers are waiting for Nov and PS4 sales. All I said in my sarcastic manner was, does that not apply for MS? Simple as that.

Took over what, exactly?

They took over Sony on Oct sales in US. Isn't this thread is about that?

You misspelled handhelds. 3DS and Vita are the platforms pushing Japanese developers "up" in the traditional market.

There's not a misspell here because he is telling the truth. Japanese developers making games for consoles again are finally alive and finally sort of doing well because a Japanese maker is the market leader. We see how handheld devices are going with more and more companies switching to mobile. Sony is absolutely bringing out the woodwork for these developers to thrive in the AAA market again after so many years.

THIS. THIS FUCKING RIGHT HERE. This is EXACTLY what I am saying. They both did bad. The only issue I have is, some warriors are some how turning Sony's bad into the following.

1). With only Uncharted remaster, Xbox only did slightly more. So in a way Sony won.
2). Consumers are waiting for Nov bundles. Thats why its low. But not sure why this wouldn't apply for Xbox but sure lol
3). Xbox did price drop and no one bought XBox One either (not sure what this has to do with anything here)

Don't you mean attach rate for five days of sales?

Who said anything about it not applying to X1? The PS4 just had a price drop and the numbers dropped from last year. That is why the focus is on this month and whether October fell as a result of November significantly increasing. Who knows, we shall see.
