It's exactly what happens in every season with every returning cast member (a few exceptions aside, like Pepper and Sister Mary Eunice). The showrunners simply decided to try it within a single season this time. Fine with me. I enjoy how this series is an anthology with mostly the same cast.
Plus Finn is pretty studly, so no complaints here.
It was neat to see her play the ingenue in that flashback. She really pulled it off.
I think that as of last episode, that would be the more interesting way to go. It would add to the theme of the Hotel Cortez as a chaotic nexus that pulls people in and warps their lives, without being entirely predictable.
John being the killer would have worked better two or three episodes ago. It's not like it would ruin the season if that's where his story ends up, but I would prefer a less predictable answer to the mystery. Or at least an extra twist so it's not just "crazy guy goes on murder spree."
Loved last nights episode. This has been my fav season so far and I've watched them all as they aired. I just love the hotel setting.
Was laughing hysterically when the two construction worker dudes got eaten in the cold open. But the best line of the night was definitely "he's just a hobo!"

Another good episode. I've enjoyed each with varying degrees this season, but it's been rad.
I suspected the countess was with March at some point. Though I enjoyed the reveal with Valentino and the explanation of how she turned.
I'm still thinking it's not John, though they're making it hard. The phone calls in the beginning episode from the killer while John was on the phone with his daughter and the dark figure he saw at the house his daughter followed him into. I guess both could be explained away, but it would be odd. If that little vampire girl really did help with each of the 10 commandment deaths and the killer is at Cortez, then the timeline for when John moved in would be weird too.
What's up with the vampire school? That arc has stalled for a while.
Liz, iris, Donovan, Valentino and his wife all probably want the countess dead now.

They will. They're clearly working around budget/actor schedule issues this season and are dropping plot lines for a time before returning them.

Meh I already like his new character better than tristan. I also liked his work last season. Dandy was one of the few interesting characters last season, imo.

I liked the idea behind this week's episode - an outrageously campy and trashy twist on Hollywood history - but I thought it inhabited an odd place in the overall season.
Yeah, it was unnecessary and distracting.
Did we need an explanation re: her interest in him though?
And it's dragging the season down. I don't like how this episode ignored the stuff from last week involving Liz Taylor either.

There are so many different plot points at work here and they're not really colliding yet:
- Detective being crazy
- The Countess and March
- Liz and Tristan (out of nowhere coupling choice tbh)
- Angela Basset and Matt Bomer with their revenge plot
- The infected kids
- Chloe Sevigni and those kids
- Will Drake taking over the hotel
Hypodermic Sally has been dormant so far, and we have no idea what that weird pot sticker rapist creature is either.
It seems like all signs are pointing to most characters coming together against the Countess and March.

True, I am enjoying the show just so fucking weird.
Can someone explain the first thirty minutes and the Wren storyline for me? I got the gist of the Countess's backstory (and her being tied into James March). But I didn't get to see her storyline with the two vampires meeting since my DVR started to screw up at the time and the Wren storyline was somehow in the middle of it getting back.

My local TV station likes using the same actor or actress if they do a drama series featuring multi generations of the same family. It's not uncommon to see the same actress acting as both mother and daughter or grandmother or granddaughter, especially if the older one dies before the younger character is born or grows up.
I like calling it Mediacorp genetics (Mediacorp being the name of the TV station)
It's often funny if the actor or actress is older so you end up having a 45 year old man acting as a 45 year old father who dies after the first few episode and then coming back after a time skip as the former's 25 year old son for the next 15 episodes or so. It's TV logic and a signifier to let the audience know that the characters are related.
Asian dramas also like using the same person in storylines where someone simply looks like a character's former lover. So this Finn Wittrock situation is fairly familiar to me because I've seen this in various local and Asian dramas. In Tv land, when we say someone looks like someone else, the same actor or actress must act in both roles!

Dance scene was hot as hell for some reason.
Valentino invites her back to his house for dinner, they dance then she notices the Wife standing there watching.
Valentino says the divorce is for show to get the film studio off their back.
A sexy 3way tango happens between them which leads to an actual 3way.
Valentino goes to NY to promote a movie but is haunted and seduced by the director of Nosferatu(who became a vampire while doing research)
He then fakes his death in NY, Gaga was going to kill herself but gets saved by hotel owner Tate and hooks up with him.
Basically she finds this actor(Valentino) attractive while she is just starting out as an actress in 1925, her and a co-worker discuss his public divorce.

Whelp, I have to say this is the shittiest season so far. All this season is is torture porn and blood and gore. I'm not unnerved, just a bit grossed out and Lady Gaga's character is so bland that she could be up for a fucking razzie award.
There's not subtlety in this show, just sex and blood every other scene. I have to say that these are the lamest vampires I have ever seen, they die just by being cut in the neck? No stake to the heart or sunlight burning, no fangs? True Blood had better vampires and that show went fucking stupid after the 3rd season.
When the most recent episode started when the construction workers tore off the wall and the zombie things killed the. I was like "finally, something creepy and knew" and a plus for seeing Lady Gaga change emotions from meh to looking slightly worried. I was wondering what the mystery could be and could it leave me interested for a few more episodes?
NOPE, they pretty much answered who they were in the same episode they were introduced in and the payoff was just boring, more shitty vampires having to do with Gaga's backstory or some shit. Glad to see her backstory but all I saw is we're in the early 1900's and finding a disease in a vampire orgy or something and Nosferatu was based on a true story.
Maybe I would be a bit kinder if the vampires looked a bit menacing like they did in Buffy when they attacked their victims or if they looked like the ones in salems lot. But whatever, the other story with the detective is a bit interesting but at this point I am considering just watching this through to see how much worse it gets.

What are the two commandments left? Though shalt not kill? The countess stole Holden to help push John over the edge, then vamped his wife.

- Hrm, so the killer was just John all along. Yep, the reveal definitely should have happened a little sooner. The trophy room behind the armoire was a good touch at least. Also, as unhinged as he's been, it was nice that John was together enough to call Liz "she" in the middle of that rage fit.
- Looooool, Mr. March can be hilarious when he's angry. That spluttering over the doorbell, amazing.
- I like that we see how Mr. March corrupted John personally. Turns out he was March's special project, being groomed as March's successor. That makes the predicable twist that he was the killer a little easier to live with.
- Oh wow, this is good. The Countess stepping in to push John over the edge by snatching his kid. This justifies the out-of-nowhere twist where she shows up at the carnival to nab Holden personally. This season continues to be better than the others at developing characters and letting their motivations naturally connect them to key events. We've got a nice little web of layered drama here, where March's urge to kill and practice of shepherding other killers, the Countess's maneating ways and bloodthirst and tendency to "adopt" children, and John's rage and loss and family issues and alcoholism all perfectly dovetail into a cluster of interrelated plot points. So many connections, and they're actually forming a coherent story. Well done!
- I didn't expect John to totally embrace his dark side by the end of this episode. Now his storyline can finally move to uncharted territory. It's going to be fun to watch him interact with all the rest of the characters now that his past has been demystified and everyone's on the same page.
BTW, I agree with comments on Evan Peters. He's knocking it out of the park! Definitely his best AHS role yet.

I didn't much like that episode. I mean, did the 10 Commandments Killer reveal really need an entire episode dedicated to it? The show has stalled so many of the different story lines that I can't even remember what's happening anymore. This season has had absolutely terrible pacing.

Agree that pacing this season has been very off, but it was satisfying to see a lot of plot threads finally come together in this most recent episode.
It's funny. I feel like the season has started to hit stride a little bit -- but I also thought this season had the worst start it's ever had through its years of sooo uneven seasons.
Was disappointed to realize this week that despite Wikipedia listing just 10 episodes, that it's actually a 13-episode season. For a minute, I thought it was becoming hyper-focused, which would have been very un-AHS. But with five more episodes to go, I think it's still going to be as scattered as ever, which is unfortunate.
Still managing to have some fun watching, but it seems like a show that could be edited into something better.
It wasn't a bad episode, but I don't think we needed 45 minutes of "oh March brainwashed John" as the reasoning behind the killers. We could've kept the "oh you'll be lead detective so you can finish my work" line and that would've been pretty much it.
I mean was the black cop cheating with John's wife even mentioned anywhere before? Nope, just thrown in so John can kill him off as a commandant kill. :|
Also the lack of naked Matt Bomer in this season has been criminal. We only got like 2 minutes!?
