Tales of Berseria trailer #2

I agree with Paltheos on almost everything regarding Zestiria.
The only things really in dire need of improvement in that game are the UI and the battle camera.

Gust's models look absolutely fantastic, I dunno how they do it.
I think part of it is great art, but one part is also simply allocating a higher polygon budget to the character models.

I'm playing FF13-2 right now on PC, and it's ridiculous how the character models in that Atelier shot on PS3 clearly have significantly higher polygonal definition on e.g. the hands than the ones in such an "AAA" game.

Zestiria's animations were tied to the frame rate and the game was designed for PS3 only. That's obviously not the case here after two 60 FPS in-game trailers. Proof is in the pudding.
That's not true - as you say, the proof is in the pudding ;)

OK, that looked great.

Did anyone else notice she was able to switch her target in mid air to continue her chain? That was awesome.

Oh and hello little guy, thanks for the zap..

The kid's attacks look like Cheria's now that I think about it.

If there is no linear plane where you're moving on like Graces or Zesty then they will have to make a very compelling case as to how this battle system will work cuz as I understand it, the game sounds like Star Ocean and that's not good.

Why is being like SO not good?

BTW I always think Tales has smoother free run battle systems than SO. I'm curious as to whether I'll enjoy SO5 more this time though.

Weird coincidence that the latest Star Ocean and Tales games both seem to be making changes/additions to their combat to where now it seems like SO will play a little more like Tales and Tales will play a little more like SO.

I think it's still seamless. None of the "battlefields" really look like separate areas, there's a bridge in one of them that looks way too close to the action to be background scenery.

I just hope Namco's planning on doing it like tri-Ace and working on making party members always visible instead of all putting in really noticeable transitions to load stuff in/out when a battle starts or ends.

What changes in SO5 make it seem like Tales? Besides the mystic arte looking mechanic.

So just to clear up some facts, there was a reason why there was that awkward transition for battles in Zestiria. If you actually check the size of the character models during and before/after the model, it's different. The game did the awkward jump backwards because it was to show a minimized character model to therefore accommodate the combat arenas being centered on the actual world. If they didn't do this then actual areas would be much smaller to fight in.

They also added some manual guard controls.

They're not 1:1 or anything of course, it just seems like little things have been added/changed that make interacting with the games feel a bit more familiar compared to the even larger gaps with SO3 vs. Symphonia or SO4 vs. Vesperia.

Huh. That's pretty surprising and interesting.

Did this come up somewhere or you just happened to notice it?

You could tell me this is literally any of the past 6 or so Tales game sand I wouldn't bat an eye.

Series needs to chill the hell out, regroup, and come back with some fat trimmed off, a coherent story, and updated visuals.

I'm not really feeling this. The protagonist design is ugly as sin and I'm tired of the "realistic" style they keep chasing since Xillia 1.

Maye it's just that the last Tales of games made me lose faith in the developer team, it feels like they have no clue on what they are doing.

Velvet's character design and outfit is fantastic.

Interesting, Durante himself! Hang on a second, maybe I got what it was wrong exactly but there was some technical reason for it running at 30 FPS, you would know that better than anyone when you modded the game. I think it was the animations, but you found a way around it technically.

This time the game isn't just being designed for the PS3 so there's no difficulty.

I didn't find a way around it actually, someone else did. And I certainly don't know better than anyone! However, I did write an article which goes into some detail about it if you'd like to know more.

Allot of unhappy replies in this topic. I disagree with allot of them, but the "This looks like a PS2 game" posts that I see over and over piss me off.

"This looks like a PS2 game" is the king of hyperbole posts. It looks nothing like one.

I am interested, thank you for the link!

Edit: Yeah it did indeed take some effort to up the frame rate and it didn't work perfectly at first.

I was just happy to be able to play it on PS4 personally.

Zestiria felt like the team was experimenting with a bunch of new ideas and only a handful worked. They tried to do open world, which was an improvement on what we got with the Xillias, but they either didn't have the budget/time for putting anything interesting in the open world, or just didn't bother. The Skill system is interesting, but the game does a halfass job at explaining it, and you're going to have to grind your ass off to get any good equipment. The combat is fun, even if it's a step down from Graces, which I assume was the inspiration for the combat. The introduction of the arts, casting arts, normal attack triangle was actually pretty good, well once you set your party to quit attacking casters with art attacks. This also helped balance Armatization so that it wasn't completely overpowered, since casters would just obliterate you since you have no normal attacks in Armatization mode. The limit of skits to just inns and resting points was odd, and the steady removal of cooking is just stupid. Xillia 1&2 only had snacks you could buy at stores, and food can only be bought at inns. Who in management decided that cooking should be removed from the games? It's so stupid.

The story is fine from what I've played, though some choices the writers made really hurt it. Side quests really love killing off kids, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. Characters are fine, which a majority of the cast being fun. The only ones I didn't like were Alisha for being boring as hell and Rose for story reasons. Doesn't help that certain reveals towards the end fall flat since it relates to a character that's barely in the game.

Could write more, but at the end of the day, Zestiria tried a bunch of new things, but it ended up hurting the game in the long run for me. So, if Namco takes everything they learned from Zestiria to make this game better, we could have a really great Tales of game. Just please be good.

So I'm just getting up now, and it doesn't look like there was anything worthwhile that happened during their live stream? Definitely glad I didn't stay up for it lol.

Looks okay, but won't be getting it day one like I did the past games. Total burn out. I'll wait for Amazon.co.jp prices at $5 from third party sellers or something.

Velvet looks and sounds awesome, this is shaping up to be the first Tales game I'm actually excited about since Vesperia.

Looks good but I hoped that the battle would have the same camera angle as in Vesperia and Abyss. I guess as long as it has a good story I'll buy it I suppose.

Anyway, talking about the cheap production/character model quality, I think a very fair comparison is Gust. I severely doubt they have even a Tales-like budget for Atelier games, and yet their character models are superior.
Weird thing is that flight unit also made models for Zestiria which look nothing like Atelier or Shining Resonance models.
Right, Gust uses FlightUnit for the character models (oldest game I can find is Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia from 2006). Bandai Namco also used FlightUnit for at least the God Eater series before.

While Zestiria's character models are all outsourced with FlightUnit having a significant involvement, they don't have Jonathan Stern credited for shader programming (something he is for all of their other newer games I'm aware of, and that typical cell shading is what FlightUnit models excel at). I guess Bandai Namco really wants to keep that Xillia 1 look (while having character modelling outsourced not only to FlightUnit alone), even though the dark scenes at the start of the new trailer have totally cheap looking light and shadow shading on the models as a direct result of that decision.

I've been so burned by Xillia 1/Xillia 2/Zestiria's crappiness that I have my reservations about this. The trailer made it look like there's potential, but I have my doubts. And I still can't fucking stand that outfit.

Lol I remembered that you were super excited about Zestiria, that you had Sorey as part of your avatar for a long time. What happen?

The new character in the Zestiria anime is most likely the blond swordsman in Berseria...

There is also the part in the trailer where a guy on his knees transforms into a werewolf which has the same effects as hellion transformation. Not sure if that is just reusing asset or actual hellion transformation.

I think the degree of interactivity between open-world sandboxes like TW3/FO4 and Tales also makes that a bad comparison. Perhaps DA:I is closer, how was that day 1 on consoles?

This is a direct framebuffer grab on PS3 (!):
Dragon Age: Inquisition ran surprisingly good for being a Bioware game on console. Still 30fps but very stable. Talking bout the PS4 version

It's also their best looking 3d game by far, not just technically but art-wise game is colorful and it just looks nice. Nothing like Dragon Age 1 and 2 or the Mass Effect trilogy. Those games just had a drab and shitty look to them. DA:I had some bugs, but that's to be expected from Bioware.

I think the problem with Gust games is that they animate like crap, I've seen videos of Atelier Sophie and the animation is so stiff.

Nothing like Star Ocean or Tales those games animate incredibly well in battles.

So Zestiria sequel confirmed or the anime will partially cover Berseria since the anime is called "Tales of 20th Anniversary Animation" instead of "Tales of Zestiria the Animation".

If it's getting a sequel, I find it funny they aren't calling it Zestiria 2.

Zestiria 2 would come with all the bad baggage Zestiria came with. Even though they were working on this game long before Zestiria launched most likley
