Sonic the Hedgehog's new PR person is incredible

I don't really think anyone here has turned on him they're just asking for an apology since it seems like an honest mistake.

For some here saying people are too sensitive you sure do blow things out of proportion.

What you just said is not what ive read on the last 2 pages.

Still, its an opinion based on an observation. You are welcome to agree or disagree. Im not really interested in a debate.

Yeah I don't think Ruby knew either which is why I don't particularly care myself but that kinda reasoning has been used to attack trans people as well so I can understand some push back on that.

Honestly don't see the problem about other people sticking up for trans people even if some of them are... overzealous. Also transgendered is an improper term you can just use it without the "ed" in your usage.
Ah. Thanks for this. Excuse my ignorance on the subject lol.

I mostly observe people being outraged at outrage and some weird comparison to the charlie hebedo thing where people died for some reason? (Seriously what?) The most I see people asking for is a sorry which is pretty consistent which some odd tangents.

If you don't want to discuss it that's fine but why even join the conversation in the first place then?

Ah. Thanks for this. Excuse my ignorance on the subject lol.

It's cool it's not widespread nomenclature at this point so I don't expect everyone to know everything. :p

No I'm asking because I don't really know. To be honest I had no idea attack helicopter was a transgendered term. I had to look up the meme. Perhaps Ruby didn't know either.

But my post was a legitimate question, are the ones outraged, offended, and asking for apologies actually transgendered or is it the cisgendered people virtue signalling? The former is completely justified, the latter is not.

That being said, the tweet should be deleted and an apology issued.

I'm trans and I'm not offended (because I don't think Ruby knew the connotations of what they were saying), but I do think an apology would be nice.

Why even an apology though? There's nothing in the context of these tweets that relate it to trans people. If a joke is off limits because at some point someone somewhere used it in an offensive context then a whole lot of jokes would be on that list.

To some people I bet it does and they have every right to think so. Just because something was meant to be good natured fun doesn't mean it actually is.

But does it mean it isn't good natured? Think about it. Some French may be offended but other French may find Glass Joe a hoot. If you don't mean to offend, do you not do it because some will be? Some won't be offended, do you not think about them at all? Others will be offended by those being offended and even others will be offended by someone not making the joke because they are afraid. At what point is it ok or not ok? Or is it all opinionated? We have trans gaffer in this thread finding the joke funny, but you have others offended. Those who find it funny say it's ok, those who don't say it isn't. What gives you the right to say it's not good natured, or me the right to say it is?

I guess I'm over thinking this, but I feel a lot of people look over those who are within the community (trans community for this subject) who are not offended for those who are. I mean, you can't really say a lot without offending someone somehow, just kind of the way humans work.

I'll believe it when I see it.

So we can just move on from this and go back to the hilariously bad memes, or do you want to discuss this for the remainder of the thread?

I feel this post I made yesterday kinda answers your question:
Nah.
We just need to understand that your "funny joke" may offend someone. From there you can look at the criticism as fair and apologies or carry on with life. Most people don't want to offended.

Of course there's no objective way to handle this stuff, it all comes down to opinions in the end. But I don't think a simple sorry would't hurt.

This is what I've learned from this thread in the past few days.

I think it's fairly ironic that a tweet that mocks otherkins is used by people on this thread to argue that a fictional blue hedgehog is transphobic. Any poster in this thread that has identified themselves as transgender are not too bothered by it. One of these posters retweeted it as he/she found it funny. One poster wanted Sonic's twitter account to apologise, he messed up with his words and that same person later calls others in the thread 'anime niggas' in his/her own post. (surprisingly not banned or post edited) no sense of irony there. Not pulled up on by any of the outraged parties in the thread.

The only people complaining are offended on behalf of transgendered persons (who appear not to be too offended), however they have no problem with the meme mocking otherkins, because fuck them. Am I right?

No one believes that Rubyeclipse meant to offend but at least an acknowledgement that it wasnt meant to offend, at most an apology that the tweet caused offense but he never intended to mock transgender persons. Looking for more than that is insane.

Can we move onto funny Sanic comments like before?

Why? The guy should stick up for his own jokes. This overreaction needs to go by the wayside.
It will, just like every other Twitter-storm (is that the right term?). Social media fury tends to burn brightly, but briefly, and a week from now it won't even matter to anybody if he apologized or not outside of a few hangers on

He'll have to make some, first.

Like that Shadow FB post. Assuming that's new.

I actually bought a bunch of the Sonic PS3 games a few months ago because of Rubyeclipse tweets. I'll buy and platinum Sonic 06 if he stays on with the same humour.

Sonic just tweeted about Akira Saito passing. It puts everything into perspective. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.

I mean, I wasn't intending to imply he wasn't making funny comments before this, I was more saying that for us to move on to a new tweet, there has to be a new tweet for us to move on to.

Which I guess is the unfortunate loss of M2's Akira Saito, but there's a separate thread for that.

Frankly, I'm amazed at how much people could get worked up over a Twitter account for a 90's video game mascot. Hopefully there is a modicum of self awareness in some of the more serious comments.

It just depends what push your buttons I would guess. Sometimes someone is going to say something that will brush you the wrong way while it will be inoffensive for the rest of the universe. The thing is that with a 140 characters limit and the whole world being connected together online you are bound to get your joke misinterpreted or offend someone involuntarily. When it's a minority group that is often at the center of prejudices and bigotry you are basically walking in a minefield. It's obvious that he didn't have any malicious intent with his joke so can simply say it wasn't the intent and be done with it.

I sincerely had no idea about the helicopter thing being trans-phobic so I learned something today.

Making trivial one liner about calling people offended weak or mentioning outrage culture isn't going to help having a good discussion about this or solve the issue.

I think ya'll need to apologize to the Sonic Twitter account.

Everyone getting worked up, and it's not at any of the bad games in the franchise. ;(

I think these tweets by Katherine Cross explain why I have a prombelm with this "joke" and why its disappointing see comments like "Outrage culture!', "Its's just a joke, lighten up":

That off colour joke from the official Sega Sonic account, mocking gender identity, has the consequence of normalising transphobia.

No, in the grand scheme of things, it's hardly the worst thing in the world, but it provides that much licence to already toxic people.
https://twitter.com/Quinnae_Moon/status/700517709415514115

It gives them a safe space for their bigotry, rather than sending the signal that it's unwelcome and unbecoming.

It leads to people who use the gamergate hashtag to attack the trans community which has happen as shown by this: https://twitter.com/HybridEidolon/status/700501623110434817

Had to check the tweet by typing
Code:
from:sonic_hedgehog helicopter
in twitter search bar, and holy moly :lol It's a quite risky tweet for these days, especially if it comes from an official account.

If you're getting triggered by Sonic the Hedgehog its probably time to take a break from the internet for a while and come up with some healthy coping mechanisms, instead of trying to police innocuous comments.

The helicopter tweet was not aimed at transgender persons, you know that, it was a meme aimed at otherkins. Based on Rubyeclipse past tweets he has never once came across with narrow-minded views, so to say he intended to mock transgender people is illogical. Where is your proof? The first tweet you quoted implies that the account meant to offend transgender people, it doesn't not. Changing the context to suit your own agenda is dangerous and it belittles times where people are actually prejudiced by comparing the two. However, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Where is your outrage at how otherkins are treated or do you think it's okay to send tweets mocking them? If it's not okay, where was your condemnation? Are they not people too?

R.E: those last two tweets.

Naw, c'mon. Who is going to think "aw great I can post my extreme transphobic views now the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account legitimises them!"?

This is the absolute most ridiculous hill to die on.

I personally don't think he said anything wrong. And no, he shouldn't apologise.

If Sega deem it to be disruptive to their marketing they can personally sort the situation out. No more needs to be done. And the outrage is certainly overblown.
