Wow, this is more embarrassing for Proyas than the actual movie.

From the man who brought you "KNOWING"

I honestly like Knowing a lot, I think it's an entertaining movie. Not a great film, but I liked it.

That said, Proyas needs to grow a thicker skin, holy hell. The movie legit looks terrible.

Anybody else see it? It's not terrible.
The "whitewash" complaints shouldn't matter because there's nothing historical about this movie. It's pure fantasy with flying gods and weird monsters with an egyptian theme, but it might as well take place on an alien planet.

I'm not saying it's great, but don't let edgy comments deter you if you want to see an over-the-top action fantasy popcorn flick. It's cheesy fun that succeeded in holding my attention throughout. It's definitely no Lord of the Rings but it's a helluva lot better than Jupiter Rising. I can give it a 5 out of 10 wait for the rental score.

But once a movie becomes a whipping boy on the internet there no stopping the criticism. Especially by those who never see it.

I'll watch it on Netflix.

Shouldn't be long.

It's funny, I first saw the trailer for Gods of Egypt on Youtube, and while watching it, I thought that it was great for a Netflix Original movie or Youtube Red movie, and in fact that's what I thought it was, without even a second thought, right up until it was announced that it would be out in theaters.

Then I went "whut".

Because.... whut.

Make a film, release it for public consumption, and then throw a tantrum when your work receives criticism.

He needs to maybe choose a different career path. Not being able to endure criticism means you probably shouldn't be an artist.

Dude should worry more about getting a new project rather than reception of this movie. It's not like lionsgate had much faith, limiting it to large format screens to increase the average ticket price, Proyas seems to be the only one defending it.

He's right you know.

Most of the people commenting in the thread or twitter haven't even watched the film and are just regurgitating what the revierews have said or thier own bias just from watching the trailers.

But these guys are the leads of a movie about Gods of Egypt

They used every little bit of imagery they could that had to do with Egypt.

The regions, the outfits, the names, the architecture, but they couldn't be bothered to use the racial makeup of Egypt at all. Kinda odd.

I do wonder what Ebert would think of this film if he was still around. Ebert was probably the biggest Proyas fanboy on the planet, helping to lead the charge to get Dark City reassessed after its initially dismal notices and was one of the few guys to really go to bat for Knowing. I don't think any critic had anywhere close to as strong an attachment to Proyas.

... You know, I really, really liked Alex Proyas's earlier films.

Like, The Crow and Dark City are still films I lose myself in every time i watch them and resonated with me on a really deep level.

It's a shame to see him have a meltdown like this after screwing up on his latest film. Just... move on. Even Spielberg made stinkers.

Just watched the trailer and it feels like a standard action-popcorn-movie with overdone CGI effects, and rather messy and unfocused. Certainly doesn't pick my interest.

Of course it's hard for someone who sees a work where he has put quite some time in it getting ripped to shreds by critics and audience, but he's really overreacting here.

This is reminding me of that thread with that douchey photographer. I guess Proyas can always digitally insert his own sun in photoshop for money.

The majestic critic prowls the jungle in search of its prey. Straightening his thick rimmed glasses and with a bottle of wine in tow, only the most succulent of preys will do. He approaches the river. The critic glances at the nearby movies to find the right one. And when it does the critic begins its hunt. Chasing after the politically incorrect movie, the critic is quick to pounce and bite at its neck. The poor film never stood a chance. The critic lets out a mighty roar of 'four out of ten' signaling his pride that it is time to feed.

Truly a noble species.

Only the French have big enough budgets to be able to afford real Egyptian gods.

To be fair, most paintings of Jesus show him as a white dude while the general consensus is he must have been darker skinned.

And I'm not defending this movie. It looks like pure garbage.

One of my favorite directors. Sucks to see him go down hard over this film. Especially because the movie is terrible.

That critic (Kimmel) is so polite... poor bloke.

Saw the trailer last week in the theaters, it looked pretty campy.

I'll always enjoy his movies and this is a terrible look for him.

That said, being the subject of critics gleefully trashing his movie for their own little snarky arms race is bush league.

When all is said and done, I watch his movies and Facebook interactions rank pretty damn low on the things I consider when it comes to him. On the other hand, critical dogpiles are always lame as hell and it reaffirms my feelings on a lot of critics.

So is it possible that most people think the movie is just terrible, without it being group think?

Look at the io9 review for an example.

This is hardly new. Every year there's a movie or two that critics relish sharpening their knives over.

It is a massive gut check when you release anything to the public to be criticized. I understand his frustration but had he not ranted he would have likely chewed his own tongue off.

Proyas is a really great, underrated director. But it was pretty clear the studio had little confidence either way, giving it a February release. That's where effects showpieces go to die and Proyas should know this.

As others have said he has some points but to go full rage does him no favours.

film critics by and large do pick out particular films for a proper OTT roasting, seems this film was the unlucky 'winner' this time round.

Then what happens is people finally watch it a few months later when it's on Netflix or Amazon and say, "you know, the film was a lot better than the critics said".

Rinse and repeat.

You made ancient Egyptian gods white, nah not letting this slide.
There are some black actors playing gods in this movie too. There are also the animal-type gods.

The rants are silly, but I can understand his frustration by the critics who haven't seen it. It's really no worse than the rest of his mediocre movies.

He was born in Egypt, though. Apparently his parents were Egyptiotes, meaning Greeks living in Egypt.

But yeah, the rants are childish. Even if you completely discount the whitewashing angle, he must know his movie is silly popcorn shlock, which is fine, but it's probably not going to be loved by critics unless it's a home-run like Pirates of the Caribbean or Avengers.
