I didn't get how anyone thought that could have been real. When has a controller looked just like a patent drawing? Those things are simple examples not actual designs.

That said when the second source popped up I was dumbfounded. I was ready to eat a massive crow.

They had me for a little bit. But someone had a pic of some black acrylic next to #2 and then I saw the gif of the UE4 demo comparison. After that the inconsistencies were really obvious to me.

The first picture is the true giveaway. Once you realize the screen is showing an already released screenshot, you can see that the lighting in the picture is all wrong. The screen has a flash reflection but the shadows aren't hard enough to be flash photography and it's not well lit enough to look like there is a bright light overhead.

#2 clearly has the reflection of a residential ceiling lamp or a standing lamp in it that would be out of place in an office. And the screen just doesn't look quite right in some of the pics.

Same. When I first saw the first "leak" I hated it and eventually thought it was fake. But then the second one showed up and looked legit.

Or they might just be laughing their butts off

Possibly... But my corporate America experience makes me believe that there are reports on it.

I have worked in Marketing Research at companies bigger than Nintendo, both would have had reports on this type of thing trying to figure out whatever they could about the reaction.

Edit: no matter what it gives you a pretty good idea of why people love Nintendo and what people don't like about them.

Like I said in the original Destructoid thread, any product that's reached a fabricated stage looks nothing like patent art. That should have immediately killed the "rumor".

It's a relief this is fake because:

-I hope they're not doubling down Wii U (Kimi-san said they are not making the next Wii or Wii U, so didn't make much sense).
-The controller looks expensive, so the console would need to have cheaper internals.
-Didn't like that the UE4 demo was from a "phablet" chipset demo IIRC, implying a console closer to Wii U than XBO/PS4 in power.
-Months and months of people whining on forums and Nintendo doing damage control until it settles down.

A bit disappointed because:

-The design was growing on me (with the possibility of a included attachment with grips and buttons for classic gaming). Looks futuristic, sleek and Apple-like. Probably the real controller will look more like a toy :p (not a bad thing, but it'd be nice for a change)
-The possibilities implied by haptic buttons, force feedback sticks, all the possible combinations for layouts.
-Headphones out in the controller!
-Wheel buttons (this and the SCD add-ons are my favorite patents right now)

Or it could be what everybody wanted and likes? Not everything has to be a negative.

This is Nintendo we're talking about.

It's like asking if EA could just not put a season pass on something.

Or if Ubisoft could release something not so buggy.

Or if Bethesda could make good games.

Or if Bioware could stop being a pale shadow of its former self and also make good games.

Or if Scamco could stop scamming people and just make good Tales games and localize them and release them outside of other major RPG releases.

The argument was 3D printing that's this flawless isn't very accessible and they would doubt someone would take that much effort to do it.

BUT THEN AGAIN.

If you have been interneting for a long time, there were people who wasted a lot of time on elaborate pranks through something awful, portal of evil, and Old Man Murray back in the day.

That someone would create a fake controller is absolutely not a surprise to me.

I imagine with the N8 (or whatever) we'll have some guy leak the console, controller and 10 mins of Smash 6 only to later find out that it was a combination of a Photoshopped model, a 3D printed console and 20 different university level CG projects.

I miss when fakes were laughably blatant.

That thing was hideous and unpractical. Your hands would cover a considerable amount of the orner of the screen when using the sticks.

Nintendo will create something better. No doubt.

The video was masterful, though. lol

I want to say that we aren't at the point in time that we can actually play console games without physical buttons. Not saying it can't turn out that way yet, but I really don't see how anyone would think this was a good idea. I hope Nintendo surprises us with the controller...I'm nervous!!

What a ride that thread was. Really well done fake. Kudos to both "leakers." Enjoyed that video lol. I admit, I was starting to become #teamReal with all those ;)'s and moon landing pics. Kinda glad it was fake though even if I liked the idea. NX unveiling will still (hopefully) be a surprise.

Haha oh this certainly does happen

Well, it's just that other than with the original DS, I don't think Nintendo has ever done this with a brand new platform since the 1990's that is supposed to release the same calendar year. The silence is unusual. The N64, GameCube, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U in particular were revealed ages before release.

Somewhere at NOJ and NOA there is a social media team reporting on this thread to senior management telling them it's a good indication that interest for the NX is high.

Haha oh this certainly does happen

To be fair, the Wii U had some crazy and epic speculation threads, 7 of them, (six were full 20k post threads, the seventh wasn't as large), news about it was everywhere from GAF to N4G to IGN, yet the E3 2012 reveal killed all hype for the device and outside of us Nintendo enthusiasts, it sold like shit.

There's always hype for new hardware, regardless of the failures or success of the predecessor of that hardware, it's only natural that interest is high on something you don't know anything about.

We will see how things are come post-E3.

Again, given how packed E3 2016 may end up being, it may be in Nintendo's best interest to reveal the NX device(s) before E3 to avoid getting overshadowed by Sony & Microsoft, then let their E3 presentation (whatever form it takes) be about the games.
