I just flew out of there a week ago. Might have gone through the same checkpoint, and interacted with the same guards. What a world. Condolences to the victims' families and friends.

Turkey is in a lot of trouble. A war next door, and a warlike separatist movement at home. An authoritarian regime that keeps winning elections but is wildly unpopular with almost everyone but their base. A dependence on foreign tourism at a time when tourists are afraid to come. And the best bread in the world when everyone is learning that carbs are about the worst thing for your health.

PM just said that the flights will continue in an hour. Wtf?

Well i would imagine the airport is big enough to be able to continue the flights while keeping the sections of the airport impacted by the attacks closed.

Considering the amount of police that is going to be there i doubt it's unsafe as of now anyway. As horrible as it sounds but if they can make sure everything can continue why "inconvenience" the public.

I'm split on it though. It's been like 5 hours or so now. And i think of all the employees there that probably lost some colleague or friend.
The Airport is too busy though to close it off entirely for too long.

What? That doesn't make any sense. Nobody is going to want to use that airport right now. Not to mention that would surely impede any investigation.

Actually this is the perfect moment to use the airport because no one wants to use it. The investigation part is a different matter.

I saw one of those Facebook live check-ins today.. a friend of mine was there today, said he was 30 meters away from the first bomb when it exploded.

Luckily he made it out safe somehow.

Another horrible attack. Turkey can't catch a break. Condolences to the families and friends involved. Very saddened to hear this right after waking up.

Can't speak for the UK but I was in an airport in the US when this happened and it was on every news channel non stop the entire time I was there so its most definitely not being ignored here.
I dont blame that sort of commentary as its simply human but yeah right after finding some way to connect ourselves to the scene - my friends cousin was there once/i had a turkey sandwich last week - we insist inadequate media coverage when its ubiquitous

A fairly Facebook-active friend of mine was supposed to be traveling around this time and has been silent for a while now and hasn't checked in safe... I hope it's just him sleeping.

Fuck terrorism, this fear is awful.

I like the Facebook marked safe feature. I have a Turkish friend in Istanbul that I went to school with for 4 years, good to hear he is fine.

Airports really need to start checking people at the dropoff, pickup and/or door(s) instead of doing it at the entrance to the gates. Right now, it's not hard for a suicide bomber to walk into the airport, find a crowd of people and blow themself up.

Ataturk airport has two checkpoints. One at the gates, one at the entrance. This happened regardless.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

This just shifts the crowd to the drop off point and the danger for massive casualties from a suicide bomber is moved to that area with it. Not something that simple sad to say.

That is possible in any crowded area though. The point of airport security is to avoid threats from actually getting on a plane.

It's hard to keep commenting on these attacks; I can only imagine how hard it is for people directly affected. Dozens have been killed and over one hundred injured, some probably seriously maimed.

As I undertand it, this happened at the entrance of the international check in area... there is a control after the first door where they check your bags, etc, you can not access the checkin area without going through this area. It happened regardless...

The west doesn't really care about the Muslim world. You'll see this thread bear evidence of this and die away. Should it happen in Western Europe, the loss of life would not be so normalised.
But I being party to both feel like my heart is breaking.

I'm heading to Europe in 2 days so this stuff is pretty terrifying... Scary hearing what happened in Brussels as well considering I was there a year ago. Rest in peace to the dead and condolences to all the families affected :(

Fuck these pieces of shit that keep doing these horrific acts.

So tired of this shit.

I saw a live feed of the airport, tons of cars rushing in. To say these people are brave is an understatement.

Terrible news. The slow creep of islamism, at first moderate and then increasingly radical, now threatens to engulf the entire Middle East in violence. Rest in peace to the victims.

Just saw Richard Engels report. Sounds like there was some hero cops there (tackling one terrorist, shooting another). Tons of airport footage.

Yep

I just don't know what is their "end game" is? Do they wipe everyone off the face of the planet and then live peaceful, normal family lives?

I sometimes have a feeling even if the entire world surrendered to them, they would STILL terrorize people :\

Depends on the organization. ISIS in particular is trying to bring about the apocalypse in accordance with their interpretation of Islamic eschatology. This is a pretty good, if slightly outdated (at the time it was written ISIS hadn't started carrying out Paris-style attacks in the West yet) article from The Atlantic: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/03/what-isis-really-wants/384980/

My FB feed is full of ignorant relatives politicizing this tragedy while the bodies are still warm. Then when called out on it they point at Obama and Clinton asking where I was when they politicized the Orlando shooting.

People here were politicizing Orlando minutes after it happened.

It doesn't really work, one way or another you create a bottleneck somewhere as a result. Experts say the key is to actually find ways to have fewer bottlenecks in our societies, not more, and airports are full of them.

Yeah it was pretty disgusting.
It's not disgusting.
If it was the first time a mass shooting occurred, sure.
But there's one daily, if Newton, Sandy Hook or Orlando is not the time to bring political action into the discussion, when is it time? When people fogot and stopped caring?
You have to give change when it's needed most and to assure the public it will not happen again, Republicans however don't care.

Same for this, terrorist attacks will keep happening, if France, Belgium and Turkey a few months ago is the wrong time to talk about it, then when is it?
Turkey needs to fix unstable political climate, stop heading in a conservative direction and to return to its strong secular self it used to have. Erdogan needs to go, and it's internal conflict need to be resolved so it can focus and take lead in the fight on terror cells within its borders and beyond.

Governments saying that their heart goes out to the victims and that their praying for them or have then in their thoughts is just not enough if its followed by inaction.

One of my dad's good friends travelled back from Istanbul a few weeks ago and we spoke how it was actually a really cool place.

RIP to those who died.

Fuck terrorists and terrorism.

it's sad because years ago i was begging to get stationed there. now its the last base on earth i'd want to go to.

Where do you stop with that though, Europe is all connected via train stations too and most of them you can just walk on with luggage undetected. You would have to fix security at pretty much all stations to stop it, plus Europe has free borders so if you really wanted to you could get on at any station.

Wren't Turks attacking them in the street, trying to put sacks on their heads? I have an American friend living their with a wife and young daughter. Pretty worried for his safety and not just because of IS.

Wow, CNN has a video of the suicide bomber detonating on their front page. What a horribly intimate, lonely, and troubling video even in its grainy form.

Rest in Peace victims and healing towards those affected.

People here were politicizing Orlando minutes after it happened.

Both Orlando and Istanbul are political issues. Whether guns, homophobia, immigration, or Islamic terrorism, these are all issues that affect the body politic.

There's no problem talking about these things at any given time. Best to talk about them while we still remember why we're having the discussion. Otherwise, we just wait until the next tragedy arises.

Heard about this last night, awful and horrifying stuff. Turkey is in such a bad place right now as a post near the top of this page says for so many reasons, how regular have bombings and terrorist attacks been in Turkey the past 12 months? I can't imagine trying to live normal life in the current situation. I hope all the victims rest in peace and thoughts go out to all affected.

yeah i remember reading about that in april. some guys put a bag over an airmans head but they ran off when some other airmen ran up on them. captured later.

not sure that was directly related to isis though. but i definitely wouldn't want to be in turkey as an american. i hear the morale is at an all time low on the air base there. i couldn't even imagine how the turkish citizens feel after this attack.
