OOTP Baseball 17 officially available - NeoGAF League Details

4-2 and gained 2.5 games on Oakland, but my stud prospect who was starting to hit ML pitching went down for 5 weeks, sigh.

I was looking at my top prospects, 4 of my 7 top pitching prospects are guys I signed as minor league free agents to be organizational filler. I guess grabbing every dude with a 100+ mph fastball worked out to some degree!

Notes: I think some weird stuff happened. Had a player in minor league rehab that got released apparently. A couple other releases showing up so let me know.

Wow

What an absolutely terrible sim

Wow

SMFH ALL I SAW AT FIRST WAS THAT I HAD A DIVISION LEAD AND LOST IT. WHAT I DID NOT REALIZE WAS THAT I HAVE LOST JOSE FOR THE YEAR.

I can't believe Bryce Carter, my all-star Catcher, is out for the playoffs AGAIN this season.

So much injuries everywhere owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

This season has been a bust. Too many big injuries to overcome. Would have really liked my team this year at full strength. So probably no big moves in the offseason.

I just lost Brad Miller for the season and Alex Jackson is out for an indefinite amount. And my rookie first baseman didn't record a single hit all week!

Some puzzling performances on my team this season. Alex Abbott is probably going to lead my team in most offensive categories despite missing two months. Willy Adames, the latest in the long line of injuries I've had this season, managed to hit 16 HR's, but only got 38 RBI for his trouble. And Ponce, my ace, has an almost 5 ERA.

I'd say I can't wait until next season, but many of my guys look like they're in decline already, and my farm system is a wasteland. My owner has as a goal getting the WS by 2024 - I'll be lucky to win 70 games that season at this rate.

You have a 9-4 record against me this season, I'm ready for you to own me this next sim and ruin my post season chances :(

2.5 games back of Oakland, but I lost my main backup outfielder and my best hitting backup infielder. At least Iser is back from the DL and can DH now and Alex Jackson's injury wasn't serious.

Tacoma lost the PCL to Nashville. Jacksonville is still playing for the SL title and Clinton is still playing for the MWL title.

Robo Doyers clinched the NL West.

Yay Nashville!

I'm terrified to download and see now. I've gone from having a decent lead to being 4 games out and I'm about to find out in a few seconds my fate

Well I guess I kind of have that wild card game spot locked up, but if I keep having 2-4 sims...

St Louis is down to less than 1% chance to knock you out of the wild card. The Braves are at 1.8%, it would take the most insane choke of all time for you to not make it.

In the AL Toronto is 100% in. Tampa, and Oakland 98 and 99% in respectively. Seattle is at 93%, after that its White Sox, Twins, Orioles and then distantly far behind Baltimore and Houston.

I was looking at your team, you have a guy with 0 defense at DH, and then another guy whose listed position is DH (but has at least some defensive ratings, albeit none even average) in CF. You also had a couple of other average or below average defensive players and your team is 9th in the AL in defensive efficiency.

Wasn't the plan. Many of the moves I made this last offseason were done in the name of improving my defense. 2019 Silver Slugger CF Brett Phillips was never supposed to start this season, for example. I moved him to DH to hide his glove, but then moved Lavisky there after his subpar fielding was exposed, so Phillips was to be the backup utility OF/DH - about 5th or 6th on the OF depth chart. Several injuries later, and Phillips has amassed a team worst -10.6 ZR in 62 starts. So, he's on the wire now! Singleton has also been a liability, but I have nowhere to put him. Good thing he's in the last year of his deal.

I anticipate trying to be very active in the trade market in the offseason. I've built my team like a mid-contention-window contender (which won 110 games only 3 seasons ago) with most of my team under contract for several more seasons. They're degrading way ahead of time, and there's nobody on the farm to replace them, so I'm in a bit of a bind. With the benefit of hindsight, I might have been better off not dealing Weisenberg and Washington for Bauer - I could really have used the youth injection on the ML squad.

So I wanted to see who was the current Mike Trout... the most valuable player in terms of the top player's WAR compared to the team's total wins:

Some pretty surprising things in here.

First, David Bedgood is a complete monster. 9.1 WAR, and his play accounts for 12% of PHL's total wins.

Second, Mike Trout isn't even Seattle's best player (I was surprised). Johan Quevedo is having a monster season behind the plate. .316/.361/.557 with a 157 OPS+ and is a + defender.

Third, Division leaders tend to not have just one player driving success. Austin Meadows in Pittsburgh is an outlier, 10.3% of PIT's total wins are accounted for by Meadows. But every other division leader does not have one player account for more than 7.5% of total wins. My guys in Oakland trail everyone in this metric, Munoz only accounts for 5.1% of the total wins.

Now, sorting by Top Player WAR:

Here, Quevedo's great season comes even more into focus. But, I guess if you're going to beat out Mike Trout, you better be something special.

And sorting by best player WAR, division leaders do tend to have players in the top 50%. Just shows that teams need balance to win their divisions rather than just a couple star players.

Anyways, thought this was some interesting stuff.

Good luck to everyone in the stretch run!

Awesome post Cosmic, I wish I had more free time to put stuff like this together.

And yeah Quevedo is having possibly the greatest offensive season by a catcher ever:

.316/.361/.557/.918 with a wOBA of .385 and a wRC+ of 158, all while being a +1 or defender at Catcher. I mean he was a decent catcher last year (just shy of 3 wins in 124 games) but this season he turned into a top 10 player in baseball.

What's crazy is he's been 100 points of OPS worse against lefties. Trout (.899) and Quevedo (.838) both "struggle" versus lefties.

Notes: Final regular season sim is tomorrow.

Teams definitely in:
Code:
Blue Jays Mets
Athletics Pirates
                     Dodgers
                     Diamondbacks
Rays and Marlins also look like near locks.

Twins still have a couple paths to the post-season. 1/2 game back of Seattle for #2 WC with a game in hand and 1 back of Chisox for division with the final 3 game set in Minnesota against them. It's going to be a flip of the coin, but maybe our pitching and defense can overcome the loss of Joseph for a playoff trip. Hopefully this young group of guys is oblivious to the idea of pressure.

Geeze, where was this run early in the season? I was debating just crapping up my roster for this last little bit because there was about 7/8 teams all within a game of each other and I wouldn't have minded a better draft pick instead of coming up short to the Marlins. Probably should have actually done that as I don't see us making up the difference.

Looks to be too little too late.

I'm surprised to be in the hunt for the last WC slot. With the exception of Kimbrel, my team is complete and healthy for the first time since early April, so I actually have a modicum of hope. It's all on my starters now.

Note: Wild card playoffs cover tomorrow's sim (if I have a chance to sim, going to the actual Indians vs A's game tomorrow).

2021 Playoffs
Code:
Blue Jays Mets
Athletics Pirates
Mariners Dodgers
Rays Diamondbacks
Twins Marlins

Have fun at the game!

Congrats to all the playoff teams!

EDIT: Blah on the playoff roster management. Had a couple guys that were playoff eligible hit the DL during the last 3 weeks of the season.

The software should allow me to make eligible any player I wish to take the spot of someone who is playoff eligible but who is on the DL.

Unfortunately, it's not letting me do that. So I have to carry one catcher for at least a week as my other eligible catcher is still injured.

Lame.

Of course. I pull 3/5ths of my rotation, kinda punting the last week and to prevent something stupid like a Matt Moore. I leave Kellogg in because he's been great all year and I figure one more start wouldn't hurt. I go 4-1, miss the playoffs by a game, and the loss was Kellogg getting lit up.

Vargas won the batting title, should win ROTY and a silver slugger. Team looks good for next year. Don't know what I'll do with my OF, but I've got solid options. Congrats to all the playoff teams, and good luck. Let's get one this year, AL.

Ok so I finally checked to see how my OF actually got injured the beginning of September when we were 5 1/2 games back of the wild card spot. He either decided to play golf before the game in Philadelphia or he played golf that night after they got back to Atlanta and had a game the next day. Really?

Sweeping the Sox in the final series to take the Central crown...sweet!

Of course, it would be nice to have Joseph for the post-season, but this young group of guys seems pretty mentally tough. No expectations, but I think this team is playing loose and free.
